The Summer Youth Initiative Program features classroom instruction and work experience focusing on green collar jobs and customer service. Classroom activities include networking and marketing, human resources, financial management, literacy, work readiness, and job retention skills. Program will run from July 6, 2009 through August 14, 2009.

Target areas: The Mon and Upper Allegheny Valleys and foster youth City and County-wide.

Number to be served: 100 Age range: 17 through 24

The Summer Vocational Program is a six week program that provides paid work experience, work ethics, work place etiquette, classroom instruction, mock interviews, and job readiness for youth placed in Auberle’s residential and foster care programs.

Target area: Available to participants placed in Auberle’s residential and foster care programs in McKeesport and surrounding areas.

The Summer Health Careers Internship Program provides one week of campus orientation followed by five weeks of classes, work experience, and a self-esteem retreat focusing on nursing and other health related careers.

Target areas: facility is located at Duquesne University but can serve youth County-wide.

The Summer Youth Counselors Program is a 10-week Summer Camp in which participants work as youth counselors. Program includes leadership development, anger management, first aid certification, & money management. Possible scholarship assistance.

Target areas: Wilkinsburg and surrounding communities, including Wilkinsburg High School and neighboring school districts.

One Block Program

The One Block Program is a five week neighborhood beautification and employment project that includes landscaping, painting, & general clean-up. Also includes lectures and instruction on environmental initiatives and sciences in the Allegheny County region.

The Braddock and Duquesne Youth Projects are seven week programs that include career building, civic responsibility, media work, service learning projects, urban farming, urban gardening, community development and improvement, social entrepreneurship, and leadership internships.

Target areas: Braddock, Duquesne and surrounding Mon and Turtle Creek Valleys.

Number to be served: 100 Age range: 14 through 18

The Green Jobs Youth Employment Program is a six week program that operates in local parks. Participants serve as crew members working in teams or as conservation interns working directly on projects including green job work such as stemming hillside erosion, planting native trees, maintaining walking trails, tending urban farms, increasing biofuels production, recycling building materials, preventing pollution, saving energy and decreasing stormwater runoff.

Target areas: serving youth throughout Allegheny County. Number to be served: 60

The Summer Apprenticeship & Training Program is an eight week program that offers work experience in the fields of camp counselor, child care, health educator, or Dragon Boat League assistant coach. Also offers basic & soft skills development, training in good work habits and work ethics, communication, team work, problem solving, and career exploration. Social activities and field trips also included.

Target areas: Duquesne and surrounding areas. Number to be served: 25

Pittsburgh Works provides differentiated services for participants based on age: 14-15 year olds participate in career exploration; 16-18 year olds receive job readiness training, interviews with work site hosts, and placement in internships at businesses and community-based organizations; 19-24 year olds receive job search assistance in developing resumes, applying for jobs, registering on CareerLink, and securing work.
