Why downtown?

Waterfront, amenity-rich, walkable urban location

allows MCOM to attract top faculty, students and

researchers to thriving urban “live, work and

play” downtown environment

84% of current MCOM students surveyed favor the

move overall

Students who chose not to matriculate to USF,

26% would have reconsidered

More students currently live within 2 miles of the

downtown site than live near the main campus

Places medical students closer to TGH, where they

do the majority of their clinical rotations and spend

40% of their time

Proximity to CAMLS, where students have

requested more time for simulation training

Projects planned to start construction: a new

400-500 room luxury hotel, new streets, a

signature office tower, the Morsani College of

Medicine and Heart Institute, and an adjoining

office building to house health

industry-related businesses.

USF Health Heart Institute alone projects $28

million in NIH within 5 years.

Economic benefit of biomedical research is

undeniable – each dollar of NIH funding adds

$2.60 to local economies. (Tripp Umbach)

USF Health Heart Institute is projected to drive

$56 million to $73 million annually in local

economic activity.

Will Drive Economic Development:

Heart Institute: ROI from integration of

research with teaching and patient care

USF Cardiology faculty increased 5-fold in two years

and we are adding 5 top heart and lung transplant

surgeons over the next 12 to 24 months.

TGH already has one of the busiest cardiac transplant,

cardiac surgery and invasive cardiology programs in

U.S. but needs greater academic productivity to be a

top 10 U.S. News - ranked program.

We now need to recruit 20 NIH funded physician &

basic cardiovascular scientists.

Since physician scientists NEED to be close to both

their labs and clinical sites, the new USF Heart Institute

will be the perfect recruitment tool.

CAMLS: Training, Research and Innovation

Close proximity of CAMLS to the new

medical school will greatly improve

medical student teaching using the

world’s most sophisticated simulation

equipment and trainers.

Move downtown enhances access to the

CAMLS Innovation Center, which utilizes

multidisciplinary teams of healthcare

providers and biomedical engineers to

assist medical device companies in the

entire device lifecycle.

This proximity will allow by our cardiology

and cardiac surgical researchers to

develop their own medical devices or

improve biotech company devices to
