PREFACE.

The collection of Paper Money offers attractions unequalled by any of the hobbies which usually occupy the attention of the dilettante, while the rarity of such collec¬

tions, and the high facial value of the bills fill our minds with thoughts on the mutability of this world’s riches. Here we have notes which only one hundred years ago passed current for two thousand dollars, selling for a dollar or two, while other bills, equally old and interesting, can be purchased for twenty-five cents. They were all issued in good faith by the government, have made dozens happy before the inevit¬

able repudiation came, and then perhaps brought ruin to their holders. From that time they have been carefully hoarded in the vain hope that they might be redeemed some day; then after several generations have passed, they are brought forth from their hiding places to enrich the album of the intelligent amateur.

Against our present knowledge of the engraver’s art and the various industries which are used in the manufacture of paper money, the efforts of our forefathers are almost comical, the adornments of the note being in most cases simply a caricature, the patriotic mottoes high flown or absurd, although intensely interesting, while the paper runs from thin tissue up to rough card board, and this again has been made difficult to counterfeit by mixing mica or silk threads with the pulp. Another device to baffle the counterfeiter, was the misspelling of words on different notes ; thus, on one series of bills we have the name differently given on each value, viz: Pennsylva¬

nia, Pensylvania, Pennsilvania, and Pensilvania.

The signing of any issue of Colonial or Continental notes was effected by the selec¬

tion of say twenty well known citizens for this purpose, any two or three of whom could sign the bills ; thus, nearly any old American family can find the signature of their ancestors on the bills of this class. Samples of such notes can usually be pur¬

chased for a dollar each, the small extra charge being made for looking up the particu¬

lar name. One of the great advantages of selecting paper money as the object of pursuit, is the ease with which it can be divided into suitable parts, and the small outlay of cash necessary to secure an interesting collection. For instance, we can confine ourselves to any of the following divisions.

Colonial Money as a series, or the bills of any particular State, or even one of each design of all the States, — say fifty bills in all.

Continental Bills, one of each value (23 bills), or the complete set (hi bills).

Confederate Bills. A complete set of all the bills issued only amount to 71 notes ; or this again can be amplified by adding the issues of the State Banks.

Fractional Currency. A beautiful set of all the small notes issued by our Government from 1862 to 1875 only numbers 30 pieces, but when the amateur desires to collect all the minor varieties, he can run the list up to nearly three times the num¬

ber ; in this connection, it is well to note the following: —

Patrons in ordering should always state the kind of a collection they are forming, because unless they desire to get every variety, we can often supply at the same price when out of the exact bill ordered a more desirable note (either in condition or

by

catalogue price) of the same design, but of a different variety in the case

of

Fractional Currency, or of a different date or denomination of Colonial or Continental Bill. This is a decided advantage to the buyer which we have to stand, owing to the

impossibility

of keeping a full line of all bills in stock.

Note.—Unsigned notes printed on blue paper are occasionally met with; they were sup¬

plied to the banks to compare with suspected bills; they are usually dated July 22, 1776.

The series of May 20th, 1777, and April nth, 1778, were withdrawn, and after destroying

$19,848,268, the remainder was repudiated by the government on account of numerous counterfeits in circulation, although they are quite easy of detection. For much interesting information see the American Journal of Philately for June i and 15, 1888.
