2 Welcome to St. Jude of the Lake ▪ Mahtomedi, MN
Fr. Chad’s Corner
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Morning Source
I’m excited to announce that starting Thursday, October 10, there will be a weekly opportunity for you to spiritually recharge at St. Jude through Eucharistic Adoration and Reconciliation. “Morning Source” will take place every Thursday from 8:00 - 9:00 am with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and private confessions. I invite you to stop-in as often as you’re able, to start your day with Jesus in silent prayer. Come for 10 minutes or stay for the whole hour!
Homily Recordings
Beginning this Monday (October 7), a link to audio recordings of the Sunday homilies will be posted on the front page of the our website. If you were out of town on a given weekend or want to listen more deeply to what God might be saying to you through a particular homily, you’re just a click away from our homily database! And you can even post to social media or share directly with family and friends!
Feast Day Reminder and Update
Our 80th Anniversary Feast Day celebration is quickly approaching, and I’d like to clearly define the events surrounding the celebration. Please mark these historic events on your calendar and plan to attend with your families!
Friday, Oct. 25 (7-8 PM): Evening Prayer (Vespers) in the Church with time for each person to venerate the relic of St. Jude. Come for this opportunity to be physically and spiritually close with our patron – many graces await you and your family!
Saturday, Oct. 26 (5:00 PM): Solemn Feast Day Mass with Archbishop Bernard Hebda and installation of 1st class relic of St. Jude in our altar. This historic Mass will fulfill your Sunday obligation and will be followed by a dinner reception in the Ministry Center.
Stewardship Mailing and Ministry Fair
This weekend kicks off our annual discernment of stewardship! The theme for this year’s campaign is “Take Root, Bear Fruit.” You will be receiving a packet in the mail that clearly outlines the process for you and your family. Please read the packet carefully and plan to attend our ministry fair next weekend (October 13th) following Sunday Mass. God is calling each family to greater commitment through prayer, participation, and generosity. Come experience the blessings that He wants to pour into your lives!
God love you!
Fr. Chad VanHoose
SUNDAY’S GOSPEL:
Luke 17:5-10
Jesus teaches the apostles the importance of faith and service to God.
SCRIPTURE FOCUS:
In today's Gospel we hear Jesus teach about faith and service to God. The context is a continuing dialogue between Jesus and his followers about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Jesus has just finished an instruction on sin and forgiveness.
There are two related teachings that Jesus offers to his disciples when they cry out for an increase in faith. The first is the familiar reminder that faith, even just a little, will enable the followers of Jesus to do wondrous things. But this uplifting and inspiring teaching is quickly followed by the second teaching, a caution about knowing one's place in God's plans. The disciples of Jesus are to understand themselves as servants to God and his plans. Even when God works wonders through us, with our mustard seed-sized faith, we must not seek praise. Our participation in God's plans is God's grace to us—nothing more, nothing less. When we are graced enough to cooperate with God, the work we do is nothing more than our obligation to God as faithful stewards. And yet, our faith enables us to believe that what we have offered in service to God, as his servants, can be made to produce a hundredfold.

Come to hospitality and meet your hosts, Confirmation students, Matthew Sutherland and Henry Clark, say
“Hi” to old friends and make some new ones.
We are always looking for groups to host hospitality. It is a fun way to get the word out about your group or ministry. Visit our website under “Serve” to sign up.
This weekend is our Kick-Off to Stewardship “Take Root, Bear Fruit”. What is stewardship? It is an expression of discipleship – grateful and generous out of love for God and others. Discipleship is both a privilege and a challenge, it is not a comfortable way of life for us to put aside our desires. Each of must discern, accept and live joyfully in the role God calls us to live and invite others to participate in the life of Christ. Our love and gratefulness lead to a desire to share our gifts of prayers, participation & generosity in return. Please start reviewing your Stewardship mailer and begin completing both the Survey and Commitment form. Also, begin thinking about how we can take root in Mahtomedi for another 80 years.
Thank you for sharing your gifts and giving back to God and St. Jude of the Lake! Need more: https://

God wants to convince us of his generosity, and in turn want us to live generous lives. ~Matthew Kelly
Generosity. It’s at the heart of Christian life. It’s at the heart of the Gospel.
Since October is Respect Life month, I’ve been thinking about how generosity and justice go hand in hand.
Hmmm…
Once we take the plunge and immerse ourselves in the Gospel, we realize that there is a level of generosity that goes beyond giving money and things to the poor. It is a generosity that challenges us to change the conditions that make them poor or makes us apathetic.
How might God be calling each of us to reach out to a hurting person who crosses our path?
If we look around our schools, workplaces,
neighborhoods and church, we might be surprised at the needs we’ll see. The needs of others are always an invitation from God for us to live generously.
The kindness and compassion you and I extend may make the difference between despair and hope.
It occurred to me that every day prayers go unanswered, and it’s not because God didn’t want those prayers answered. Perhaps he sent us to answer prayers, and we didn’t heed the call.
It’s true we can’t do everything, but that doesn’t mean we should do nothing. As I’m often reminded, don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do! And what we can do is make small sacrifices and simplify our lives in some small ways so that others may simply live.

What is “Adoration”? It’s one of the most-asked questions I hear. I reply, “Adoration is simply a time to be with the Lord and have a conversation with Him.” Like all conversation between friends, there are a number of different ways that we talk with each other. Often it’s a
‘you are amazing’ expression of abiding joy. Sometimes there’s a ‘thank you for all you do for me’ conversation.
Occasionally it’s an “I don’t know where to turn,” or “I can’t do this without you,” plea. I’ll even admit to a rather questioning, “Are you kidding me? This is the plan? I do not like this plan,” anger-mixed-with-trust venting session.
And when I’m desperate, I just sit in silence, because there are no words.
In return, as it goes between the Lord and I – and between you and the Lord – we receive the greatest of all
gifts, grace. In its essence, it is God’s love pouring out in the form of supernatural encouragement. Do you
remember those innocent and heady days of falling in love? That confident feeling that you can – and will - do anything asked of you? People noticed that you had a
‘glow’ about you. There was something different about you. We are then able to move our mountains, fight our battles, and fully embrace whatever life throws at us, the Good, the Bad, or the Indifferent. That’s Grace.
Confession helps remove the barriers to receiving God’s grace. But what it really does, for me, is provide closure. It helps me to move on and start over. Talking to Jesus, as Fr.
Chad sits in persona Christi in the confessional, helps me to re-orient my life toward the True, Good, and Beautiful. I receive cleansing grace there too.
We are kicking off a new Adoration & Confession hour called The Morning Source. Start your morning off right.
Orient your day. Rest your soul. Receive grace. All in an hour. #besthourofyourweek #amen
