Είμαι πολύ αγχωμένη! Η αδελφή μου παντρεύεται και ενώ θα έπρεπε να Όλγα είναι ένα χαρούμενο γεγονός, μας έχει γίνει εφιάλτης! Ο αρραβωνιαστικός
της, ο Άρης, απαιτεί προίκα! Για να παντρευτεί την αδελφή μου, έχει ζητήσει από τους γονείς μου να τους αγοράσουν ένα σπίτι ή ένα διαμέρισμα. Νόμιζα ότι αυτή η παράδοση είναι ξεπερασμένη! Λυπάμαι, αλλά ο Άρης έχει χάσει την εκτίμησή μου. Είμαστε όλοι αναστατωμένοι!
Η αδελφή μου αναρωτιέται αν πρέπει να προχωρήσει με το γάμο.
Κυριακή Γιατί σου φαίνεται παράξενο; Αυτή η παράδοση έχει ισχυρή βάση, όχι μόνο στις μεσογειακές χώρες, αλλά και σε άλλα μέρη του κόσμου, όπως στην Ασία, στην Αφρική και στη Νότια Αμερική. Οι γονείς που έχουν κορίτσια το ξέρουν και το περιμένουν, και οι άντρες το θεωρούν δεδομένο.
Δίνει στο νεαρό ζευγάρι μια καλή αρχή.
Μαρίνα Αυτή είναι σεξιστική άποψη! Καμιά γυναίκα δεν πρέπει να το δεχτεί αυτό! Τι αηδία! Είναι σαν να πληρώνουν οι γονείς μας τον άντρα για να μας παντρευτεί! Άντρας που απαιτεί προίκα δεν έχει αξιοπρέπεια! Εγώ θα συμβούλευα την αδελφή σου να του δώσει τα παπούτσια στο χέρι!
Χάθηκαν οι άντρες;
Θεόδωρος Και οι δυο σας εκφράζετε ακραίες απόψεις. Δεν πρέπει να βάζουμε τις παραδόσεις σε μοντέρνα καλούπια γιατί έτσι χάνουν τη σημασία τους . . . Δε λέω, πρέπει να συμβαδίζουμε με την εποχή μας, αλλά κάποιος συμβιβασμός δε βλάπτει. Πρέπει να λάβουμε υπόψη πολλούς παράγοντες, όπως την οικονομική κατάσταση των γονέων, το πόσα κορίτσια υπάρχουν στην οικογένεια, τις διάφορες οικογενειακές πιέσεις, ακόμη και τις επαγγελματικές προοπτικές του γαμπρού . . . Κάθε περίπτωση είναι μοναδική.

ΙΣΤΟΡΙΑ ΕΝΟΣ ΜΕΤΑΝΑΣΤΗ
Ο πατέρας μου, ο Δημήτρης, γεννήθηκε σε ένα μικρό, απομονωμένο νησί του Αιγαίου. Την πρώτη φορά που ταξίδεψα στο νησάκι αυτό, απόρησα με τι καρδιά πήρε αυτή τη μεγάλη απόφαση να φύγει για την τόσο μακρινή Αυστραλία! Πώς έφυγε από ένα τόσο γραφικό νησάκι, όπου βρισκόντουσαν όλοι οι γνωστοί και συγγενείς του και ταξίδεψε είκοσι χιλιάδες χιλιόμετρα μόνος του, σε άγριες θάλασσες, να φτάσει σε μια αλλιώτικη χώρα, δίχως να γνωρίζει ούτε τη γλώσσα ούτε τα συστήματα;
Ο πατέρας μου ήταν μόνο δεκαεφτά χρονών όταν πέθαναν και οι δύο γονείς του. Bρέθηκε «πατέρας» τεσσάρων μικρότερων αδερφών. Με βαριά καρδιά, αναγκάστηκε να τους πάρει για πάντα από το νησάκι που κρατούσε τόσες ωραίες παιδικές αναμνήσεις και να πάνε να ζήσουν σε ένα μεγαλύτερο νησί όπου ζούσε η γιαγιά τους.
O Δημήτρης όμως είχε ήδη καταλάβει ότι «το ποτάμι ποτέ δε γυρίζει πίσω».
Ο δρόμος της μετανάστευσης είχε ξεκινήσει. Η φτωχή γιαγιά δεν μπορούσε να συντηρήσει μια τόσο μεγάλη οικογένεια. Ο Δημήτρης δούλεψε σκληρά εδώ και ’κει, μάζεψε λεφτά για το εισιτήριό του και με άδειες τσέπες, κάτι συνηθισμένο για εκείνη την εποχή, έκανε το μακρινότερο ταξίδι της ζωής του.
Το 1938 έφτασε σ’ αυτόν τον «παράδεισο» που λεγότανε Αυστραλία. Ένα κρύο πρωινό, στο λιμάνι της Μελβούρνης, με το πρώτο αγκάλιασμα του θείου του, του μπάρμπα Γιώργη, ο Δημήτρης έγινε Τζιμ.
Γρήγορα κατάλαβε ότι οι ευθύνες του ήταν μεγάλες και πολλές. Τα λεφτά που του έδινε ο θείος του σαν υπάλληλος στο μαγαζί, δυστυχώς δε φτάνανε να βοηθήσει την οικογένεια που είχε αφήσει στην Ελλάδα.
Είχε κηρυχθεί πόλεμος. Ο πατέρας μιλούσε τώρα πολύ καλά αγγλικά εφόσον κάθε ελεύθερό του λεπτό, το περνούσε μελετώντας. Του άρεσαν πάντα οι ξένες γλώσσες. Μιλούσε ήδη ιταλικά γιατί το νησάκι του βρισκόταν κάτω από ιταλική κυριαρχία για πολλά χρόνια. Έτσι, γράφτηκε στον αυστραλιανό στρατό σαν διερμηνέας των Ιταλών αιχμαλώτων πολέμου και μπόρεσε να βρει κάποια οικονομική ανακούφιση.
Πέρασαν έντεκα ολόκληρα χρόνια από τότε που μίλησε τελευταία με τα αδέρφια του. Μετά τον πόλεμο έμαθε ότι η γιαγιά του είχε πεθάνει, ότι ο μικρότερός του αδελφός έχασε το χέρι του σε πολεμικό δυστύχημα και ότι οι δύο του αδελφές ήταν παντρεμένες με παιδιά.
Τελικά, μετά από είκοσι χρόνια στην ξενιτιά, ο πατέρας μου πραγματοποίησε το όνειρό του και κατάφερε να φέρει όλα του τα αδέρφια κοντά του στην Αυστραλία. Ο κύκλος είχε ολοκληρωθεί!

Γεια σου Γιάννη,
Πρώτα απ’όλα ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ που δεχτήκατε να με φιλοξενήσετε σ σπίτι σας στα πλαίσια του Προγράμματος Ανταλλαγής Μαθητών. Είναι πρώ φορά που ταξιδεύω εκτός Ελλάδας και ομολογώ ότι φοβάμαι λιγάκι. Έμα ότι υπάρχουν πολλοί Έλληνες στην Αυστραλία, αλλά προτιμούν να μιλά αγγλικά. Αυτό μ’ανησυχεί λίγο γιατί τα αγγλικά μου δεν είναι τόσο καλ Παρ’όλα αυτά, είμαι πολύ ενθουσιασμένος που θα γνωρίσω την Αυστραλ και την οικογένειά σου.
Έχω πολλές ερωτήσεις να σου κάνω. Πρώτα απ’όλα, πώς είναι η περιοχή στ οποία μένεις; Πώς θα περνάμε τις ελεύθερες ώρες μας; Ελπίζω να μου δοθ η ευκαιρία να παίξω μπάσκετ. Θα μου αρέσει το σχολείο σου; Και ο καιρό Πράγματι τα φετινά Χριστούγεννα θα είναι το κάτι άλλο . . . Πιστεύω ότι αυ το ταξίδι θα μου μείνει αξέχαστο.
