SENIOR ACTIVITY & WELLNESS CENTER

You will not want to miss Halloween at the Center !! In addition to lunch, we will have a costume contest, cake and

witches’ brew.

Adult Coloring Class The idea that creative pastimes are good for people is not new. But during the past few years, adult coloring has come into vogue . . . and we are discovering that Adult Coloring has amazing benefits that can help people of all ages, especially for seniors. These benefits range from

helping us to boost mental health and encouraging mindfulness to combatting more serious conditions, like depression. It relieves stress, increases mindfulness (the ability to focus on a

task), improves cognition, boosts relaxation, creates a sense of

accomplishment, stimulates creativity and last but not least provides an

opportunity for socialization and keeping that all

important connection to friends and other seniors.

The Center offers an Adult Coloring Class on Tuesdays at 12:30pm. This is a drop in class and the Center provides the art supplies. The designs can be as simple or as complex as you would like. Just come by check it out.

Healthy Aging In Winter and Beyond: 4 Important Vaccines for Seniors Covered by Medicare*

Fall is in full swing, meaning colorful foliage, delicious pumpkin treats, and—perhaps best of all—cooler weather! While you may be celebrating the end of an unbearable summer, it’s important to remember that cooler weather can also mean greater risk of getting sick.

Scientists have proven that cooler temperatures weaken our immune system, making us more susceptible to illness and infection. Additionally, cooler weather toughens the outer shell of viruses, making it easier for them to travel from person to person. The immune system naturally weakens with age, which means winter can be even more dangerous.

Here’s a list of four vaccines that Medicare helps pay for and that you should talk with your doctor about to help protect yourself from illness this winter and beyond.

Influenza Vaccine

Why is it important for older adults to get the flu shot? Older adults—even if you are healthy—are at high- er risk when it comes to the flu due to age-related weakening of our immune systems, making it more diffi- cult for us to fight off disease. For the 86% of adults 65+ who are managing a chronic condition—like diabe- tes or heart disease—the flu can be even more dangerous because you are more likely to develop complica- tions or become hospitalized.

Shingles Vaccine

Why is it important for older adults to get the Shingles Vaccine? Researchers believe that the age-related weakening of our immune systems can trigger the “reawakening” of the dormant chickenpox virus. One in three adults contracts shingles at some point in their life—the majority of whom are 60 years or older—and the older you are when you get shingles, the more likely you are to have severe side effects, like fever, ex- haustion and loss of appetite. These can lead to physical deterioration and/or additional infections. Whether you remember having chickenpox as a child or not, you should still talk to your doctor about getting vac- cinated.

Pneumococcal Vaccine

Why is it important for older adults to get the Pneumococcal vaccine? Pneumococcal disease causes se- vere infections throughout the bloodstream and/or key organs. Pneumococcal disease kills 18,000 adults 65+ each year. A weakening immune system means that older adults are at greater risk, and can face more severe side effects, especially those who are managing chronic diseases.

Hepatitis B Vaccine

Why is it important for older adults to get the hepatitis B vaccine? The liver and its function change as you age, making hep B more prevalent among older adults. Your risk of contracting hepatitis B increases if you have hemophilia, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), diabetes, or other conditions that lower resistance to infection. Acute hep B is particularly dangerous for older adults because there is no specific treatment for the symptoms. Make a plan to get vaccinated today!

How our Senior Center “Works”

The Boone County Senior Activity and Wellness Center is “An equal opportunity provider and employer.”

We serve older adults of Boone County. We never charge a fee for our services for seniors age 60 or above, but we ask a donation for all of our services. We also

don’t turn anyone away for inability to give a donation for our services.

Our Center is funded 40% from State and Federal funding. The other 60% is from a variety of different sources. United Way of Boone County Inc. provides a

portion of funding. Another portion is given from Boone County Quorum Court. The remainder of funding comes from clients giving contributions as they

use our much needed services, outside donations and fundraisers done at the Center and in our community.

We ask a suggested donation of $3 for congregate and Home Delivered Meals and $3-$5 for transportation in town. There are also donation boxes in the exercise and computer rooms to help with costs of maintaining our equipment.

Flu Shots Right Here At The Center

On Halloween, October 31, representatives from North Arkansas Medical Center will be on hand to give flu shots. If you have not had an opportunity to get this

year’s flu vaccine, this will be a great opportunity to do so.

Please remember to bring your Medicare/insurance card with you. Everyone is encouraged to get a flu shot. Seniors and children are especially susceptible to getting the flu.

NARMC not only brings flu shots to the senior center but also provides seniors with blood pressure checks each month and twice a year offers additional health screenings for area sen- iors. This is a tremendous help for us as we age.

Thank You NARMC
