The Pen Green Teaching School works alongside an integrated Children’s Centre, an Early Years Provision, a Nursery School and a Research, Development and Training Base. Our Nursery School and Early Years provision have been consistently judged Outstanding by Ofsted; and in 2018 we were awarded ‘Overall School of the Year’ and ‘Early Years Provision of the Year’ by the Times Educational Supplement.

Our Initial Teacher Training programme is accredited by the Two Mile Ash ITT Partnership. Two Mile Ash ITT Partnership is the longest-running, most well-established primary

teacher training provider serving Milton Keynes and its surrounding areas, with 18 years’ experience in leading initial teacher training and have consistently provided the local area with high quality primary school teachers in that time.

Studying with Pen Green

Our programme provides the opportunity for trainees to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), with a focus on the 3-7 year age group. We offer both school direct salaried and school direct tuition fee funded routes.

Routes into Teacher Training

School Direct

Salaried

Trainees are employed at a school as an unqualified teacher during their training year. Salaried trainees are likely to have an existing position of employment at a school i.e. Higher Level Teaching Assistant or Teaching Assistant, or extensive experience at the school, with the school supporting the trainee as an unqualified teacher for their training year. Please note, there are no longer DFE grants for the Salaried route and the school will be liable for the training fee.

School Direct Tuition

Fee (Non-Salaried)

Trainees are based in a ‘home school’ during their training year. Pen Green ITT tutors arrange school placements with partnership schools. Tuition fee trainees are not employed at the school and are classified as full time students and may be eligible for student funding to support them during their training year.

PGCE

Trainees on both the school direct salaried and school direct tuition fee funded routes have the option to achieve the Postgraduate Certificate Education (PGCE) a Level 7 academic qualification, alongside their QTS. The PGCE is accredited by Birmingham City University (BCU).

Trainees undertake three academic assignments, worth 20 credits each, throughout the year.

BCU provide two days of teaching and a tutorial day for each assignment. The six teaching days take place at Fairfields Primary School, Milton Keynes, however this may be subject to change to ensure we comply with government guidance re: Covid-19.

School Based Training

Trainees are immersed in the school environment right from the outset. Every trainee is carefully matched to a class in their ‘home school’ for their training year, becoming a valued member of the school team. During the Spring Term, all trainees are given the opportunity to experience an alternative key stage in a different school, after which they return to their home school for the

remainder of the programme.

Every trainee is linked with a school based tutor (SBT), a mentor and guide for the year. The SBT will be based in the trainee’s home school. The SBT works closely with the trainee in school on a daily basis; carrying out lesson observations, setting training targets and helping to organise in-school training opportunities which will enhance and develop the trainee’s practice.

We provide the SBTs support and guidance for their roles during half-termly SBT meetings. All of the SBT Meetings are online via Microsoft Teams.

QTS Assessment

Overall judgements are made on the quality of sessions and lessons observations. SBTs and Pen Green tutors refer to set

criteria developed by the Partnership. This ensures consistency of judgement across the Partnership.

By the end of the programme, it is expected the trainees can fully demonstrate their abilities to plan an appropriate sequence of lessons across the full range of curriculum areas and sustain a satisfactory teaching standard over 80% of the teaching timetable. Trainees should prepare teaching resources, mark work and fulfil the main requirements of a classroom teacher, in readiness as a qualified teacher.
