ABOUT TRADES NORTH

Trades North delivers the largest and most

comprehensive range of trades training programs in Perth’s northern suburbs.

Delivering trades training at four locations;

Clarkson, Brighton, Wangara and Joondalup, Trades North produces graduates with world class skills that will be able to be a part of Western Australia’s next wave of economic prosperity.

CLARKSON – MAIN CAMPuS

This multi-million dollar state-of-the-art facility will be the main campus for trades training in Perth’s northern corridor.

The campus provides a full suite of training

programs in bricklaying, plastering, tiling, carpentry, joinery, engineering and electrical trades to more than 600 school students, apprentices and existing tradespeople.

The design includes dedicated training workshops and open spaces integrating each trade in a real world environment ensuring students are exposed to different disciplines and learn to work collaboratively on projects.

The Clarkson facility has embedded green practices to reduce water and waste minimisation. With wireless connectivity it also includes an eCafe for students and a centralised staff administration area providing easy access for student enquiries.

BRIghTON – ThE ShED

Located in the rapidly expanding Brighton Estate at Butler, The Shed is dedicated to conducting introductory training in bricklaying and blocklaying, plastering, wall and floor tiling. In addition, this facility has classrooms located on site to conduct theory sessions.

The Shed at Brighton provides a vibrant environment for school students to gain an introduction to trades training and an excellent foundation to progress to an apprenticeship.

WANgARA – AuTOMOTIVE TRAININg CENTRE

Located in the heart of the northern suburbs automotive industry, the Wangara training centre enables students to repair and service motor vehicles using the necessary workshop equipment. Institute trainers and industry representatives interact on a regular basis ensuring that the training provided reflects the requirements of automotive dealerships and mechanical garages.

The Wangara Automotive Training Centre provides a comprehensive learning environment for students containing dedicated student classrooms and staff administration area, well equipped workshops to accommodate large numbers of students and wireless connectivity throughout the building to allow for e-learning.

MOBILE – MOTORSPORT

Trades North delivers an exciting motorsport program that engages students to undertake trades challenges that they may not have otherwise been exposed to via a fully-equipped mobile van that travels to local secondary schools.

The Motorsport program delivers a mobile workshop with a full list of equipment to the school and enables the students to learn skills and access activities that they couldn’t normally experience in their school environment.

This unique program allows school students to experience a trade and participate in hands-on training that may fuel their passion to continue onto a full-time pre-apprenticeship or apprenticeship in the future.

JOONDALuP – ECO CENTRE

Trades North delivers practical, hands on training in Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management via an Eco Centre which promotes rainwater irrigation, propagation and the use of drip irrigation systems within the landscaped areas. The Eco Centre located at the Joondalup campus acts as a simulated workplace environment to enhance students’ skills and increase their employment prospects.

TYPES OF TRAINING

SChOOL PROgRAMS

If you are in Year 11 or 12 you can get a taste of what a trade career would be like by participating in a School Apprenticeship Link program or a school based apprenticeship/traineeship. Not only will you learn the basic skills of a trade, you will also obtain a training qualification and the Western Australian Certificate of Education upon completion of the program.

Contact your school’s VET Coordinator who can help you select the best training option.

PRE-APPRENTICEShIPS

Did you know that by finishing Year 10 you could be eligible for a pre-apprenticeship that will get you into a trade career sooner?

Pre-apprenticeship courses take about six to twelve months and will give you an insight into the skills and responsibilities that are required on a daily basis in a trade career.

Completing a pre-apprenticeship often leads to offers of employment from employers who are working with Trades North to find suitable apprentices/trainees.

APPRENTICEShIPS AND TRAINEEShIPS

Be a part of the next ‘boom’ by becoming an apprentice or taking up a traineeship in the trades industry.

As an apprentice/trainee you will spend most of your time in paid employment, learning practical skills on the job and putting them into practice. The rest of the time is spent in structured training at Trades North integrating theory and hands on practice. At the completion of your apprenticeship/traineeship you will receive a nationally recognised trade qualification and will be ready to apply your world class skills in a variety of challenging environments.

With a desire to leave the school desk and get out in the open, Jayden opted to take part in a pre-apprenticeship throughout Year 11.

Learning the basics of bricklaying, plastering, floor and wall tiling, Jayden displayed skills and confidence that connected him with the opportunity to carry out work experience with major builder, Homebuyers Centre.

Now at the end of his bricklaying apprenticeship with Homebuyers Centre, Jayden says he is loving his independence, working out in the fresh air with great people and being financially secure.

“Participating in a pre-apprenticeship was the best thing I ever did. It got me out of school and on the tools doing a job that I love. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

POST TRADE TRAININg

Trades North offers post trade training that is customised to suit the needs of local businesses and industry. Programs will be developed and delivered in conjunction with industry to ensure that tradespeople in our residential building, construction, manufacturing, automotive and horticulture industries are supported by continuous education opportunities and trained in the

latest standards.

Training will be offered for those who wish to specialise in a particular area of their trade, those who have worked in industry and require formal qualifications and training or those who require up-skilling.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

In this current economic climate, employers are faced with the challenge of attracting and retaining quality staff. Trades North will work with you to address these issues by developing a tailored workforce solution that will provide continued skill development for your staff; assist you in decreasing staff turnover and boost the productivity of your workforce. Trades North will:

• Conduct on-site employee skills assessment and gap-training analysis.

• Develop customised training to integrate with your day-to-day operation and help your business grow.

• Recognise your employees existing skills and knowledge. Through our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process, your employees can earn credits towards a nationally accredited qualification.

Like many “brickies”, 40-year old Wayne Ginn never got around to doing his trade qualification when he was younger and says he was put off from getting it in later years due to the cost and time-consuming process involved. After 20 years of laying bricks, Wayne decided to have his skills recognised by Trades North to obtain the Certificate III in

Bricklaying/Blocklaying to become a building supervisor.

“It was really straight forward and pretty cheap,” said Wayne. “For two hundred odd dollars, I would definitely recommend that other trades people get certified, it’s a great feeling after all this time to get recognised for all your hard work and experience.”
