Summary:

After a spell of unsettled

weather during the first few days of

the month, high pressure became the

dominant influence for most of the

remainder, giving dry conditions

generally but with relatively little

sunshine. Temperatures during much

of the first half of June were near or

below normal, but warm weather

during the second half of the month

brought mean air temperatures for the

month overall to between one and two

degrees above normal. It was the

warmest June for at least 13 years at

several stations and the warmest since

1970 at Belmullet. Temperatures

remained above 10°C throughout

almost all of the second half of the

month; mean minimum temperatures

overall were close to two degrees

above normal and were the highest on

record for June in many places.

Rainfall totals were a little above

normal near Atlantic coasts, but it

was a dry month generally with only

around half of the normal June

VERY WARM SECOND HALF OF MONTH

The early part of June was dull and relatively cool, but conditions became more sunner-like during the second half of the month. Pictured here are surfers at Garretstown beach, Co. Cork.

rainfall recorded in parts of the east

and midlands. At many stations it was

the driest June since 1996. The number

of wetdays during the month was

below normal everywhere (days with

1mm or more rainfall); there were

between 7 and 12 wetdays recorded

compared with the normal range for

June of between 10 and 16. Sunshine

totals for June were a little above

average over the south of the country

but it was a dull month in most places,

especially in the north; it was the

dullest June at most stations for

between 6 and 11 years.

1st to 5th: Frontal systems associated with

low pressure to the northwest of Ireland

brought cloudy conditions with rain or

showers each day, heaviest in the

southwest. Temperatures were near normal

in a moderate southwest to westerly

airstream, with gale gusts in places.

6th to 11th: The weather became dry

everywhere as an anticyclone intensified

over the country. Dull at first, but

becoming sunnier with daytime

temperatures rising above normal. Light

east or northeasterly winds.

12th to 14th: Low pressure to the east of

2

WEATHER

June 2005

Heavy thunderstorms developed

during the evening of the 29th over

many parts of the country, giving some

torrential falls locally and leading to flooding

in parts of Munster and in west Dublin. These

showers were associated with a shallow

depression which moved close to the

southeast of Ireland during the day (see left).

The automatic station at Dublin (Phoenix

Park) recorded a total of 47mm in one hour

between 1735 and 1835UTC, which included

a 10-minute fall of 16.8mm. Rainfall of this

intensity over such a short period has an

expected return period of over 100 years. In

contrast, other rainfall recording stations in

Dublin measured daily totals of only around

2mm on the 29th.

the country directed a cool northerly

airstream over Ireland, with ground frost

developing in places. Remaining generally

dry but rain or showers affected northern

areas, especially on the 14th.

15th to 27th: Becoming very mild

everywhere as south to southwesterly

winds predominated. During this period

ridges of high pressure extended over

Ireland from high pressure centres to the

south or southwest, giving mainly dry but

dull weather. Weak frontal systems brought

small amounts of rainfall at times, mainly

affecting western and northern coasts.

Winds were generally light to moderate,

but were stronger in western areas between

the 20th and 22nd.

28th to 30th: Areas of shallow low

pressure to the south brought bands of

showery rain northwards over Ireland,

heavy and thundery at times (see page 2).

Warm, humid and generally cloudy, with

light, mainly southerly winds.

Wind and elements: Mean windspeeds

for the month of between 6 and 12 knots

(11 and 22km/hour) were below normal

everywhere; they were the lowest for June

for more than 30 years at both Cork

Airport and Malin Head. At most stations

there were no gale gusts during the month

(gusts of 34 knots or more); the highest gust

of the month, 43 knots (80km/hour), was

measured at Belmullet on the 22nd.

Thunder was recorded in the periods

18th/19th and 28th/29th but there were

no reports of hail. Fog was most frequent

on the 9th, in the period 16th to 19th and

on the 29th.

WEATHER

Visible satellite image at 1710UTC on 19th

June 2005

Right

The 19th was dry, warm and sunny over Ireland, but after temperatures climbed above 30°C in parts of Britain, severe thunderstorms developed in northern England during the afternoon. Hail measuring up to 5cm was recorded, while the Yorkshire village of Hawnby measured a 60-minute fall of 59.8mm. Villages were cut off as roads were washed away, while helicopters were called upon to rescue stranded people from the flood.

Mean sea level pressure values for the month ranged

from just over 1016hPa in the north to 1018hPa in

the south, a little higher than normal for June

everywhere. Pressure values were below normal at

the beginning and again during the middle part of

the month, however, with the month’s lowest value,

997.3hPa, recorded at Valentia Observatory on the

15th. The highest pressure of the month, 1037.0hPa,

was measured at Rosslare on the 8th, when an

anticyclone was centred over the country.

Acid rain occurs when pollutants combine with moisture in the air to form sulphuric or nitric acid. pH is the simplest way of measuring the acidity of precipitation. Usually pH of 7.00 is considered neutral but this is not the case in rainfall samples. Pure water in the atmosphere has an equilibrium pH value of 5.65 at 20°C owing to carbon dioxide in the air dissolving to form carbonic acid. Any value below pH 5.65 is considered acid while any value above is considered alkaline.

Sulphur dioxide and sulphate in air contribute to the formation of sulphuric acid; nitrate in air contributes to the formation of nitric acid.

Conductivity measures the total ion activity in the rainfall, i.e. the higher the conductivity the greater the number of ions present.

There was dry weather

throughout most of June, but

some localised heavy falls

brought totals above normal in

places. As a result, there was a

wide variation in totals across

the country, ranging from only

14mm at Ardee (Boharnamoe),

Co. Louth, to 148mm at Maam

Valley, Co. Galway. Percentage of

normal values were between 24%

at Ardee and 133% at Fermoy

(Moorepark), Co. Cork. It was

the driest June since 1996 at

around half the stations in the

country.

The first week of the month was a

wet one generally, with heaviest falls

in the west and northwest.

Thereafter there was dry weather at

many stations until the final week,

with the exception of the period

13th to 16th. The total number of

wetdays (days with 0.2mm or more

rainfall) recorded across the country

ranged from only 4 at Rosslare to

between 10 and 12 at most western

stations and as many as 15 at both

Maam Valley and Glenties, Co.

Donegal. The highest daily falls of

the month were associated with

heavy thunderstorms which

developed in parts of the country

on the 29th (see page 2). The highest

fall on this day, 54.0mm, was

recorded at Fermoy (Moorepark);

this was the highest June daily fall at

the station since 1982.

Dull in most places,

especially in north

June was a dull month over most of the

country, especially in the north and

northwest where only around three

quarters of normal sunshine was

measured. Here it was the dullest June

since 1994. Totals were above normal in

parts of the southeast and southwest,

however. They ranged from 114 hours at

Birr to 210 hours at Rosslare, with

percentage of normal values between

73% of normal at Malin Head and 113%

at John F Kennedy Park, Co. Wexford.

Almost all stations measured their highest

daily sunshine values on either the 11th or

27th, with the highest value, 15.5 hours,

recorded at Galway (Univ. Coll.) on the 11th

and at Cork Airport on the 27th. Global

solar radiation totals ranged from 87% of

normal at Malin Head to 108% at Kilkenny.

WORLD WEATHER

Global weather

highlights of

the month

Northern Bulgaria was affected by extensive river flooding in early June, with three fatalities reported.

A heatwave in Italy during late June was most severe in the northern part of the country, where a number of deaths were attributed to the heat. Drought conditions were also affecting the country, with the river Po at historical low levels. In Guatemala, mudslides brought

on by heavy rain killed at least 22 people and injured 40 in the northern part of the country during mid-June. Flooding in adjacent areas of El Salvador and Honduras claimed 39 lives during the last week of the month.

A heat wave which commenced in May across areas of south Asia continued into late June. More than 400 people died as a result of temperatures reaching 45°C to 50°C in parts of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. From these heat-related deaths, at least 100 died in India's state of Orissa, while 100 fatalities were reported in Bangladesh and about 175 in Pakistan. In the Canadian province of Manitoba, incessant wet

weather prevented more than 400,000 hectares of agricultural land from being planted. Further west, heavy rainfall in Alberta around the 20th caused flooding in the city of Drumheller, while in Calgary, residents were ordered to restrict drinking water use.

FEATURE

June 2005

The Community Climate Change Consortium for

Ireland (C4I) Project was established in 2003.

Based in the headquarters of Met Éireann in

Dublin, its main objective is to consolidate and

intensify the national effort in climate change

research and to develop a new national capacity to

forecast future climate conditions in Ireland. This

is necessary for the development of national

planning for adaptation to the impacts of

projected climate change. The project has

enabled the establishment of a regional climate

modelling facility in Met Éireann. A report

launched this month provides an analysis of the

first major output from the C4I regional climate

model; it is the first in a series of such reports,

which will build on this analysis.

The following are among the report’s main conclusions:

- Projected temperature changes from the model output

show a general warming in the future with mean

monthly temperatures typically increasing by between

1.25° and 1.5°C. The largest increases are in the east and

southeast, with the greatest warming occurring in July.

- The most significant changes in precipitation occur in

the months of June and December. June values show a

decrease of about 10% compared with the current

climate, noticeably in the southern half of the country,

while December values show increases ranging between

10% in the southeast and 25% in the northwest. There is

also some evidence of an increase in the frequency of

extreme precipitation events (i.e. events which exceed

20mm or more per day) in the northwest.

- While the overall frequency of cyclones (storms) of

less than 1000hPa over the North Atlantic area in the

vicinity of Ireland is forecast to decrease, the frequency

of intense cyclones (<950hPa) is increased by about 15%

compared with present- see above. This is related to the

projected general rise in sea surface temperatures.

In a practical application of this new data set, a

hydrological model was used to assess the impact of

climate change on river discharge and local flooding in

the catchment area of the river Suir. The increase in

winter precipitation was found to produce a significant

increase in the more intense discharge episodes, raising

the risk of future flooding in the area.

The report is available online on the C4I website:
