Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

8:30 a.m. October 3, 2021 11:00 a.m.

GATHERING

The people of God come together in the Lord’s name

Welcome

Prelude - Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross (Hymn No. 301)- Callahan Call to Worship

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

Invocation

We give thanks to you, Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. From one, you have made all who live on the face of the earth. From all who live on the face of the earth, you made us one, the Body of Christ. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn, crying holy, holy, holy.

Opening Hymn No. 626 - Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence Let all mortal flesh keep silence,

and with fear and trembling stand;

ponder nothing earthly-minded, for with blessing in his hand,

Christ our God to earth descendeth, our full homage to demand.

King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture, in the body and the blood;

he will give to all the faithful his own self for heavenly food.

Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, as the Light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day, that the powers of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away.

At his feet the six-winged seraph, cherubim, with sleepless eye, veil their faces to the presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry:

Alleluia, Alleluia,

Alleluia, Lord Most High!

PROCLAMATION

The Word of God is read and proclaimed for all ages Scripture Reading

Matthew 4:1-11 (New Testament page 3)

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and said to him,

‘If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.’ But he answered,

‘It is written,

“One does not live by bread alone,

but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” ’

Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written,

“He will command his angels concerning you”, and “On their hands they will bear you up,

so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.” ’

Jesus said to him, ‘Again it is written, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” ’

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour; and he said to him, ‘All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan! for it is written,

“Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.” ’

Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Anthem

8:30 - From an Upper Room - Martin

On the night he was betrayed, Jesus took the bread and wine. Gathered with the twelve, he prayed, Giving to all a sacred sign. Take and eat this bread. This is my body. Come and drink this wine. It is my blood, shed for you. In a shadowed upper room, In that humble sacred space Jesus opened up his heart, Pouring out Gods gift of grace. Take and eat this bread. This is my body. Come and drink this wine. It is my blood, shed for you. King of kings, yet born of Mary, As of old on earth he stood. Lord of lords in human vesture, In the body and the blood, He will give to all the faithful, His own blood for heavenly food. Take and eat this bread.

This is my body. Come and drink this wine. It is my blood, shed for you. It is my blood, shed for you. This is my blood. This is my love. This is my life given for you.

11:00 - For the Bread - Copes

For the bread which you have broken, for the wine which you have poured, for the words which you have spoken, now we give you thanks, O Lord. By this pledge that you do love us, by your gift of peace restored, by your call to heaven above us, hallow all our lives, O Lord. With our sainted ones in glory seated at the heavenly board, may the church that's waiting for you keep love's tie unbroken, Lord. In your service, Lord, defend us, in our hearts keep watch and ward; in the world where you have sent us, let your kingdom come, O Lord.

Sermon - Wrapped in the Word Rev. Jon Priebe

Hymn of Response No. 301 - Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross Jesus, keep me near the cross;

there a precious fountain, free to all, a healing stream, flows from Calvary's mountain.

Refrain:

In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,

till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

Near the cross, a trembling soul, love and mercy found me;

there the bright and morning star sheds its beams around me.

(Refrain)

Near the cross! O Lamb of God, bring its scenes before me;

help me walk from day to day with its shadow o'er me.

(Refrain)

Near the cross I'll watch and wait, hoping, trusting ever,

till I reach the golden strand just beyond the river.

(Refrain)

Discipleship Opportunities and Mission Moment Apostles’ Creed

We believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.

Amen.

Communion

8:30 - And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

... And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.

Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ w ill come again.

... Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father, now and for ever.

Amen.
