WORDS OF HOPE is Caritas of Austin’s largest annual fundraising event. Each year, the
event features powerful stories that reflect our mission, and celebrates those individuals
and businesses who contribute so fully to our community.
This year, we are asking you to save the date for Tuesday, September 14th, to join us for
our 14th Annual Words of Hope. We look forward to spending the evening with you in
person at the Austin Marriott Downtown or virtually, in your home. Please plan to join us as
we share our successes, highlight our partners, honor our community members, and prove
that together, we can truly make Austin more vibrant for all.
DR. BRENDA COMBS is a symbol of inspiration
and perseverance to all who meet her. A
little over a decade ago, she was homeless,
addicted to drugs, a petty criminal and
hopeless. She had been shot, beaten and
raped during the endless years that she
called “a freeway underpass in the worst part
of Phoenix home.” It took hitting rock bottom
for Dr. Combs to find the strength to turn her
life around on a blistering summer day. Today
she is a speaker and advocate after earning
a Master’s degree in special education and
then receiving a Doctorate in organizational
leadership with an emphasis in education.

Austin and Caritas of Austin are strong because of all those in the community working
together, each day, to ease the suffering of our unhoused neighbors and end homelessness
for so many.
In March of 2020, our world and daily lives changed dramatically. We struggled with being
isolated and unable to be with loved ones – especially in times of crisis. For our neighbors
without housing, the battle was even more distressing. They had no place to call home or
refuge to remain safely indoors- no place to receive basic care services or food, as libraries,
businesses and restaurants closed. And when winter storm Uri hit, their very lives were at risk
just being outside.
Austin rose to the challenges and met the needs of our neighbors. Individuals, volunteer
groups, churches, non-profits, and our City government dug deep, got creative, and found
ways to help our fellow Austinites without homes.
This year, we celebrate the Austin community who refused to sit by while others suffered.
Together, we help our neighbors thrive. Together, our community is strong. Together, we
make home possible.
