Official Bulletin Vol. XXXIX No.3 S

— 2021

COMMANDER’S ROLL CALL Masks not required if you have been vaccinated

September 6, 2021, Labor Day is the end date for 101 days of summer. Hopefully everyone enjoyed the summer and had a fun time. I would ask that we all be mindful of the fact that the COVID Variant increased infection rate is cause for concern. As we move into the Fall/

Winter seasons please, social distance, wear a mask and wash your hands frequently espe- cially if you have not been vaccinated. Again, let us all do our part to keep each other safe.

September 11 marks the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Most of us can recall where we were and what we were doing when we heard the tragic news. The date has since been proclaimed as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. There are ceremonies being planned throughout the county. If you’re not able to attend, please give a moment of silence in honor of all who perished that day.

September 17 is National POW/MIA Recognition Day. More than 81,000 U.S. service members are still unaccounted for from all wars and conflicts. The American Legion is committed to the return of living POWs, and the repatriation of their remains. The American Legion also supports the continued declassifica- tion of all POW/MIA information.

The First Annual Bryan Hissey Golf Tournament went well considering the number of golfers, logistics in- volved and overall organizing knowledge from most who volunteered for the first time in the event. Thanks to the American Legion Staff and all who volunteered. Notes taken and lessons learned will help make the event more successful next year.

In mid-August, there was a Flag Retirement Ceremony sponsored by the AMVETS Post 2 and The Ameri- can Legion Riders, Chapter 11 was the Honor/Color Guard. The Ceremony was well attended, and I would encourage member participation for future events as your schedules allow.

In the last Newsletter article, I mentioned that for years there has been little to no adjustments pertaining to goods and services and relative pricing. Because there have not been many adjustments and the cost of eve- rything continues to increase, in order to pay for operational costs, adjustments are being made to change hopefully for the good. I have listened to complaints and suggestions for change, and the one thing common to both is finance. Currently, the input is not close to the output. COVID has wreaked havoc around the Globe and is the reason for many families and businesses to fall on hard times. Fundraising is not much of an option as it was pre-COVID and that was very much a part of our resources.

I am open to thoughts and ideas of fundraising to assist with increasing resources possibilities to continue making the Post a safe and reasonable place to come and enjoy one another along with all the amenities of- fered. Be well, healthy and stay safe. One Band, One Sound.

Friday Night Entertainment: Due to the increase of the positivity

rate of Covid-19. Bands will be determined on a weekly basis.

Legion Riders By: Tim Smith, Director

S.A.L. News by: Jeffrey Seiler, Commander

September already, where has the year gone? We hope everyone enjoys Labor Day which is a day that we honor the people that are working, and we recognize their contributions to society.

We would like to thank everyone for the support of the Steak Nights that we have had and our next one will be Monday September 27th.

The Sons of The American Legion is starting their year off on the right foot already as we have had numerous mem- bers already pay their dues. Dues run from July 1st to June 30th. The dues are $35.00 per member and $15.00 for junior members. Please stop by the post and pay your dues and hopefully we can reach our goal of 100% again.

This year our Detachment Commander Mr. Mark Fayer of The Sons of The American Legion has chosen “Casey Cares” as his project for the year. This falls under the children and youth pillar of the American Legion.

One of the things that Mark is working on with Casey Cares is an At-Home Movie Night package. The cost of a movie night is about $60.00. They are working on providing these movie Night Packages for nearly 1,000 Casey Cares families in Maryland. So far, the Sons have sent about 200 of these packages out already. We are on our way of reaching the goal of $60,000.00. If you would like to help make a Casey Cares child’s day a little brighter, do- nate today. Send checks payable to Detachment of Maryland and mail it to FSK Squad 11, Attn: Commander’s pro- ject, 1450 Taney Ave, Frederick, MD 21702, and we will get them to the Commander.

Our Squadron will be hosting a Detachment Executive Committee meeting in November, and we will be holding a 500 ticket Cash Blast draw down. Tickets are $10.00. See Jeff Seiler if you would like a ticket. The proceeds of this raffle will go to the Commanders project Casey Cares.

Here is some exciting news the next 26 club feed will be held on Sunday October 31st.

September 2nd, 1945 President Truman proclaims V -J Day upon the surrender of the Japanese September 3rd, 1783 Treaty of Paris signed that ended the American Revolutionary War

Please remember Patriots Day September 11th which is held in honor and remembrance of those who died in the at- tacks of 2001.

Sons Continuing the Tradition of Caring!!

September is upon us, kids are going back to school, football is in the air, and roads are getting busi- er. Please watch out for motorcycles and keep all of us safe. With the end of summer comes the cool- er weather and we are looking forward to that, leaving those 100-degree days in our rearview mirrors.

The Riders will be having our biggest fundraiser of the year, our Fall Dance. This will be on the 9th of October with the band Poverty Ridge providing the dance songs. Look for a Rider or the bar for tickets to this event. Will be a fun night. Did you know there are over 110,000 American Legion Riders throughout the U S? Be safe out there on the roads, and I look forward to seeing you on two wheels or at our Post.

If you would like to become a member or supporting member, please attend our meetings. You can also contact our Membership Chairman (Jami Clevenger) at [email protected] or go to our website. Membership is free, but you must be a Legionnaire, Auxiliary, or SAL member with dues paid up to date. You do not need to own a mo- torcycle to become a supporting member. We meet on the 1st Thursday of every month at 7:00 pm sharp in the meet- ing bay. You must renew your membership annually to stay an active member and continue to receive emails. For all members, please contact our Membership Chairman with any changes to your contact status to continue receiving up to date information.

Hello LEGION FAMILY

I hope everyone has had a great summer with family and friends! Our Unit year has started with a well-attended Potluck Dinner for our August meeting with great food and good time getting to know some of our newer members. Looking forward to meeting more of our members, new and old, with our upcoming meetings. Our September meeting will be the 21st at 7:00 PM at the Post Home.

Please come and bring a friend with your new ideas for the Unit.

Please remember to write down anything you volunteer for no matter who or what you do it for. It all counts for the Unit at the end of the year. I know when I am asked what I have done my mind goes blank.

So, we all need to keep track of all our time that we spend doing things for friends, schools, church, and other organizations that we can report for the Unit. It will also make you feel good about yourself when you see all the things you have done.

Our new Auxiliary Department President Andrea Anderson membership theme for this year is “LEAVE NO VETERAN BEHIND”. So, this bring us to Membership, you should have or will be receiving your renewal notice from National for 2022. Please pay them as soon as you can!

The Lounge is open normal hours on Mon- day, September 6, 2021. Pizza will be served. The Admin Office will be closed

Your Post’s History By Sheldon Shealer

(Extracts from Post Meeting Minutes)

100 Years Ago – September 1921

The regular meeting of Post 11 was called to order by Commander William M. Storm September 13, 1921 in the Auditorium of the Y.M.C.A. building. Motion passed to establish a 3 man committee to secure the use of the Y.M.C.A. room for 3 months at $20 per month. Band Committee reported that it was not feasible to establish a Band at this time but a Drum Corps could be formed. Commander will appoint a committee to look into forming a Drum Corp. Committee to sell soft drinks on the grandstand at the Fair reported that previous vendors lost money and it was not felt that enough members would work to sell the drinks. Report accepted and the committee dismissed with thanks. Motion approved to assist the “clean-up” squad that is coming to Frederick in handling the claims of disabled ex-service men and to bring in any men whom we knew had a just claim against the government. Post 11 Delegates to the Department Convention in Balti- more were cordially received and Post 11 had been honored to have William M. Storm elected to the office of Vice State Commander and John Markey re-elected as a member of the National Executive Committee.

Motion passed to have a committee of 3 appointed to get information concerning concerts which we may have in our local Opera House for the benefit of the Post. Election of officers: Post Commander – G. Hunter Bowers; Vice Commander – Guy K. Motter; Adjutant – C. Kemp Cashour; Finance Officer – Sherman P.

Bowers; Historian – Miss Miriam Apple; Chaplain – Rev. David M. Roderick. Appointments to all 8 Com- mittees were made.

50 Years Ago - September 1971

The regular meeting of Post 11 was called to order by Commander Spurrier, September 14th, 1971, at the Post Home, 117 East Church Street. Blood Donor Chairman Grove presented blood donor awards for 1970- 1971 to Legionnaires present. Motion passed to approve Bloodmobile visit on January 3rd and July 3rd. Budget for 1971-1972 was read by adjutant and approved. It was reported that Post 11, Junior’s, Auxiliary, and SAL have donated $4,185.16 to Camp West-Mar. Rehab chairman reported only 1 bed and 1 pair of crutches in stock. Encouraged people to return equipment if not being used. Balloting, 1971, New members 2, Transfers 3; all accepted. 1972, New members 19, Reinstated from 1970 3. Nays were heard so individual voting took place with more than 3 nay votes received for one new member so 18 of the 19 were accepted and all 3 1970 reinstatements were accepted.

20 Years Ago –September 2001

The regular meeting of Post 11 was called to order by Commander Govans September 11, 2001, 8pm. A moment of silence was requested in memory of those killed in the tragic plane crashes of the day in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. July financial report was passed, Post 2001-2002 budget was present- ed and passed. Membership at 1,542, SAL at 37. Camp West-Mar reported a profit of $4,500 on the Bo- nanza and $4,715 on the chicken feed. Cash Blast tickets now available at the bar. New bingo machine pur- chased, total price less than $11,000.00. Auxiliary to reserve date for fund raiser to support an Auxiliary National candidate. Member asking for reimbursement for 3 days at Department Convention as a delegate was approved. Construction of Memorial Garden in front of Post will begin in the spring, take two months, and not to exceed $20,000. FO Lach got approval to set up separate account to track Emblem Sales. PC Wise presented an award to Past Historian Maddox for her Yearbook that won Department contest and was forwarded to National for judging. Tim Lamson was appointed County Service Officer. District Command- er Butt congratulated Post 11 for a 100 plus member increase over last year.

With only 1,692 sponsored wreaths last year and over 4,000 veterans buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery not every veteran was honored with a wreath on Wreaths Across America Day. Mt Olivet had to select specific areas of the cemetery to cover fully with the wreaths available. Post 11 is asking for your help to ensure that we reach our goal to place a wreath on every veteran’s grave at Mt Olivet Cemetery. Please sponsor one or more wreaths in honor of or in memory of an American hero. For each purchase of a $15 wreath, $5 will be returned to Post 11 for use in our many Legion programs including purchasing flags for placement on Memo- rial Day at Mt Olivet.

Purchasing wreaths is easy. Order online through this direct link to the WAA page:

https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/MD0490P

Click the red button that says ‘Sponsor Wreaths’.

Select the # of wreaths to sponsor AND the location you want them delivered to (Location ID MDMOCF).

Click ‘Review My Sponsorships’. To complete the checkout process with a credit/debit card, Google Pay, or Paypal. Be sure to verify that your group ID and location ID are listed next to the items in your shopping cart PRIOR to submitting your order.

You can also fill out the form below and mail along with a check made out to WAA and mail to WAA-Post11, 1450 Taney Ave, Frederick, MD 21702.
