Date Discussion with Silvia and Alberto

Dear Silvia, if first names are OK, and Alberto,
Should we change our travel plans because of the holiday on Friday?
I would be happy to work Friday, Saturday and Sunday (part time Sunday...) if that is compatible with local customs. Unfortunately, my travel plans are constrained by previous family commitments (before Oct 30) and professional commitments to visit Kansas University afterwards. And sadly I have to be careful with recovery time for my aging body. At age 77, I unfortunately need a day or so to recover from air travel.
But the point here is to get some work done on a very very important project central to biology. That may seem an overstatement but it is not. The response of organisms to the significant majority of stimuli are determined by a molecular even atomic event, the gating response of single channels. This includes every bit of signal processing and
transmission in the nervous system, the coordination of muscle contraction, including the coordination that allows the heart to pump blood, the secretion of hormones, the control of the ionic solutions inside an animal (by gating of channels and transporters in the kidney, more than anything else), etc.
The mechanism is very likely to include some sort of bubble control, that in a fit of poetry I called bubble gating a long time ago.
We knew nothing of the physics of bubbles in channels, and as far as I can tell, the many other fine papers in this field do not involve work on the actual physics of bubbles, but just guesses and over simplified representations (as we did in our paper, I am sorry to say).
We have a great opportunity to combine your knowledge and experience with physical properties of bubbles with the energy and skills of your fine post docs Gaia and Antonio, and
this enormous need in biology.
So I am eager to spend all the time I can to catalyze this science.
As ever Bob

I confirm that we can welcome you from the 30th of October for 10 days. Please note that Friday the 1st of November will be public holiday and the University will open again on Monday the 4th of November.
We'll send you the formal invitation in the next days.
We look forward to meet you in Rome,
Silvia Venturini

October 30 for ten days would be just fine!
What is the workshop? It sounds interesting.
I look forward to hearing from Gaia and Antonio when they wish, and to working with Silvia, who I already thank in anticipation of the paperwork and headaches involved in organizing a visit.
As ever Bob

Dear Bob,
perhaps, end of October or early November would be even better to give momentum to the bubble gating project. Do you think that 10 days or so will be sufficient for a kickoff? Of course, in case you are available! Please just consider that November 24-30 I'll be organizing a workshop in Germany and won't be in Rome. In a second moment we can organize the course we talked about.
Silvia, who reads us in copy, has gathered sufficient information from our crazy Italian administration to make this invitation as smooth as possible: I think it all boils down to keep the receipts for your accommodation and travel. Please ask her for any details regarding your visit.
Finally, I think you will hear soon from Gaia and Antonio, concerning the baby steps they are currently making with the electric field.
Best regards,
Alberto

Dear Alberto
Glad to hear of your attention to technical challenges. Solving them is what makes good science!
I like your travel plans. Do you think the end of November or early December would be a good time to arrange a visit?
As ever Bob

Dear Bob,
thank you for your email. The reason I did not contact you so far is that we have been stuck in some technical challenge on the simulations and involved in some conferences. My expectations is that by mid-end October we should have some more advanced results which is worth discussing together. I agree with your view that we should not be delayed by admin stuff, so given the timeline above and your previous commitments we can start planning your visit to Rome as one or two invited seminars. In the meantime, we can always talk via Skype both on scientific issues and on the planning of your visit.
With my best regards,
Alberto

Dear Alberto
I imagine you are busy starting a new year ...
but I want to do all I can to help the bubble gating project.
We should not let a short visit for work on the project get delayed by the admin of a longer visit, in my view.
as ever Bob
