Vision
The Bachelor is the first of its kind in Saudi Arabia. The goal of the program is to bring high quality Clinical Psychology education to PNU in order to increase the number of skilled Clinical Psychologists in Saudi Arabia; a profession which is in high demand. The content of the Bachelor will cover international knowledge on Clinical Psychology theory and practice with a specific focus on the psychological needs of the Saudi Arabian people and which has been adapted to the Saudi Arabian culture. The Bachelor will be set up by a team of Dutch professionals but over time the Bachelor will be integrated into the PNU curriculum and eventually be taught by Saudi Arabian staff.
Goal
After four years, each year several dozen students will graduate the Bachelor. These students can choose to complete a Masters in Clinical Psychology in Saudi Arabia or go to The Netherlands for an international Masters in Clinical Psychology at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, where the Bachelor originated. After completing the Bachelor, students are also adequately equipped to move directly into the field of clinical Psychology and practice in, for example, hospitals, private health clinics, nurseries, schools, colleges, government health facilities, and prisons.
Message
The clinical psychological practice includes the classification, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of psychological problems and disorders. For the treatment of psychological problem or illness, the psychologist first needs to assessment the mental problems and then make a diagnosis. For this psychologists use different instruments such as questionnaires and tests. The main focus of Clinical Psychology Bachelor will be on how to treat mental health problems, including which instruments and treatments are best suited for which problems and disorders. The Bachelor includes many practicals which provide the students with the skills necessary to assess and treat many different mental health problems in the field.
Bachelor Design
The Bachelor takes 4 years: 3 years of academic teaching and 1 year of Internship (practical) and Thesis. There are six courses per year, three per semester. Courses are given serial rather than parallel, this means that courses last five weeks. Students also take the mandatory courses (requested by the University or the Faculty; these courses are in Arabic and last the entire semester), therefore students still take approximately 4 classes at the same time.
