Robert Mondavi’s vision was to provide UC Davis a prestigious forum for collaboration between the departments of Viticulture and Enology, and Food Science and Technology.
This vision was realized in 2008 with the
completion of the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science — a129,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art research and teaching complex which now houses these two renowned academic units under one roof for the first time.
The Robert Mondavi Institute Industry Partnership Program was established to forge a strong, working partnership between leading wine, beer, dairy and other food and beverage companies and UC Davis, furthering dialog
between industry and researchers, and keeping the university at the forefront of the needs of industry.

In 2013, the Department of Viticulture and Enology will open the 8,000-square-foot Jess S. Jackson Sus-tainable Winery Building. It will enable the winery to become the first self-sustainable, zero-carbon, energy-positive teaching and research facility in the world. The $4 million building was made possible by a $3 million pledge from the late Jess Jackson and his wife, Barbara Banke, co-founder and proprietor of Jackson Family Wines.
The building will include 10 dedicated, modular spaces containing equipment for various processes including high-purity filtration of rainwater
that can be used for cleaning; 90 percent of the water and chemicals from each winery cleaning cycle will be captured and processed for future use in the complex, eventually being used as many as 10 times. In addition, the building will sequester carbon dioxide
captured from all fermentations in the winery and convert it into calcium carbonate. The building also will produce chilled water using an icemaker powered by electricity from solar panels and will be equipped to generate hydrogen gas by electrolysis and produce nighttime energy using a hydrogen fuel cell. “The building is designed so that each of these systems can be removed and replaced with a newer model, making it an evolving test-bed and demonstration site,” said Professor Roger Boulton, the visionary behind the building.
Self-sustaining in water and energy
At the forefront
of sustainability
The Robert Mondavi Institute facilities are a working model for the most advanced theory and practice of sustainable production in the food and beverage industries, enabling Industry Partners to manage the challenges of the future.
The world's first and only LEED Platinum
food and beverage production facilities
In January 2011, the Robert Mondavi Institute dedicated the Teaching and Research Winery and the August A. Busch III Brewing and Food Science Laboratory. This 34,000-square-foot teaching and research complex is the only facility of its kind in the world to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification, the highest rating for environmental design and construction awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council. The facility was financed entirely by private philanthropy—no state or federal funds were used.
Benefits of being industry partners
