ITE Student Achievers’ Awards Presentation Ceremony 2014

A Force for Good

Outstanding ITE Students Apply Skills for the Benefit of Society

The penchant for public service is a distinctive trait across outstanding ITE students. At the annual ITE Student Achievers’ Award Presentation Ceremony 2014, ITE celebrates with and honours these students. Beyond accomplishing excellent grades, they have exhibited a deep sense of social responsibility and passion for helping others. These qualities are the hallmark of ITE’s unique “Hands-On, Minds-On, Hearts-On ™” educational philosophy, where students apply their acquired skills in community service or create innovations that would benefit society.

2 The Ceremony will be held on Friday 30 May 2014 at 10am at the Auditorium, Tay Eng Soon Convention Centre, ITE, and will honour 411 award recipients from three ITE Colleges. Of these, 53 students have been selected for the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Model Student/Trainee Awards, Lee Kuan Yew CCA Awards and Lee Kuan Yew Technology Awards. (A brief on the Lee Kuan Yew Awards is at Annex A. Profiles of the Lee Kuan Yew Model Student Award and Lee Kuan Yew CCA Award recipients and write-ups on the Lee Kuan Yew Technology Award winning projects are at Annexes B and C respectively).

Leading from the Front

3 Appointed as President of Student Council, ITE College West in 2012, Farisha Bte Osman spearheaded several initiatives, including the Breakfast Project – a fund raising effort to provide breakfast for needy students in the College during the April 2013 examination period. By selling handmade magnetic whiteboards, Farisha and other student councillors managed to raise more than $200. Despite her heavy commitments in school, Farisha made time to give back to the community. A volunteer at the Sree Narayana Mission (Singapore), she spends time with the elderly residents by participating in activities like music therapy, physiotherapy, feeding and games. For her outstanding performances, Farisha will be awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Model Student Award at the ceremony.

The Right Chops

4 Audric Ping is an excellent testimony that anyone can contribute to society, regardless of circumstances. When he was 14, Audric lost his mother and grandmother within a short gap of three months. As a result of these tragedies, Audric’s father became the sole breadwinner for the family. Despite challenges at the home front, Audric graduated from ITE with excellent results and was recognised as the National Young Leader Award in 2013. Besides being on the national karate team, volunteers to serve senior citizens in his community by organising events for them. For his multi-faceted successes, Audric will be awarded the Lee Kuan Yew CCA Award at the Ceremony.

A Healing Touch

5 ‘Rehabilitation on the go’ for stroke patients was on the minds of Ho Kah Wai David, Fatini Bte Haris, Ruzanna Bte Ja’afar and Seah Kings Lee, when they designed the ‘Intelligent – Constraint Movement Therapy Device’. It is a mobile application of rehabilitative games and exercise routines that patients can follow without having to constantly visit the therapist. Not only does the application help save costs and hassle for patients, it enables therapists to obtain valuable data on this self-directed rehabilitative programme. For such an intuitive product, the team will be receiving the Lee Kuan Yew Technology Award at the Ceremony.

By simply adding the iCare Personal Emergency Alert System app for free from Google Play Store, anyone can turn their android smartphones into a fall detection and emergency alert device. The app makes use of the smartphone’s accelerometer, which is used in the auto-rotation of screen display. The change in acceleration values can be used to detect falls. When a fall is detected, the application is programmed to alert up to five caregivers automatically. Firstly, an SMS is sent to the caregivers to notify them, along with a link to an online Google map that pinpoints the location of the fall. Second, the phone automatically dials for caregivers on loudspeaker mode so that the elderly, if still conscious, can communicate with the caregiver even if the phone has dropped out of their reach.

The Mobile Handcycle Attachment can be fitted onto any existing push-type wheelchair model. The elderly can also mount the mobile handcycle on a specially designed stand and exercise away in the comfort of their own chair. This single compact detachable unit can be easily transported to places, and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor rehabilitation exercises. The prototype has been further enhanced with a gear-changing system, which provides adjustable resistance to cater for different stages for arm rehabilitation. Users can continue to use the attachment as a means to keep fit, especially for wheelchair-bound persons.

Zulfadly, Jerome Cheok Chee Wei, Chan Chea Hang and Lin Zhi Wei took on the task of developing the Delta COPS (Community Policing System) application. The application basically serves two main groups of users: SPF officers and citizens or volunteers of the ‘Citizen on Patrol’ Scheme. SPF officers can use this application to upload brochures and advertisements, and share content on SPF and its community partnership initiatives. SPF can also use this as an important channel to recruit volunteers for its ‘Citizens on Patrol’ Scheme. Volunteers registered under this scheme will get important updates like dates of patrolling sessions as well.

In order to test the beta version of EPIC, the team sourced for viruses and malware from as many as 50 ‘black-listed’ IP addresses.

Project : EZ Transfer Device Campus : ITE College East

Members : Chan Qi Hua (Team Leader) Terence Koh Ngiap Seng Ong Jun Jiet

Muhd Saiful Bin Zahari

Field research often reveals real challenges that people face on a daily basis. One such challenge, as observed by ITE students Chan Qi Hua, Terence Koh Ngiap Seng, Ong Jun Jiet and Muhd Saiful Bin Zahari, is faced by wheelchair users who try to board and alight from taxis at hospitals. The four from the Mechanical Engineering faculty in ITE College East, began to conceptualise and execute a more efficient solution for wheelchair users to make that transfer. To do so, these students modified an existing wheelchair model that is commonly available at public spaces, like shopping malls or the airport. There were three changes actualised in the prototype: fitting a detachable arm rest, installing a seat with a slider underneath, and constructing the slider.

Project : I-CIT (Intelligent - Constraint Induced Movement Therapy) Campus : ITE College West

Members : Ho Kah Wai David (Team Leader) Fatini Binte Haris

Ruzanna Bte Ja’afar Seah Kings Lee

With the new I-CIT (Intelligent – Constraint Induced Movement Therapy) device, stroke patients can now have their therapy sessions anytime, anywhere. Using an application on an iPad, part of the patients’ rehabilitation programme can be automated. The device helps users exercise affected arms through games and routines on iPads. They can also increase the frequency of therapy by using the device in the comfort of their home.

In addition, the application electronically records the patients’ therapy data, as compared to a conventional therapy session where the therapist has to do so. The games in the I-CIT are intended to stimulate the patients’ minds to think and react quickly, making therapy both fun and fruitful.

Project : Reptile Egg Incubator Campus : ITE College West

Members : Tan Kah Wee (Team Leader) Ng Jun Hui

Using an old and damaged refrigerator, Tan Kah Wee and Ng Jun Hui built an incubator that boosted the hatch rate of the Malayan Terrapins by almost eight times. The Malayan Terrapin is a critically endangered species, which according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, means it is facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. The old incubator did not allow for much ventilation, so moulds and fungi formed on the reptile eggs. For the new incubator, Kah Wee and Jun Hui used a type of controller with Proportional-Integral-Derivative technology to reduce variation in temperature and humidity, while incorporating an automatic air-exchange system to improve air circulation and ventilation.
