TAR HEELS COMPLETE TURNAROUND WITH PEACH BOWL WIN OVER AUBURN

After starting the season with three con-secutive losses, North Carolina completed the greatest turnaround in school history, winning eight of its last 10 games, includ-ing a 16-10 victory over Auburn in the Chick-fil-APeach Bowl. The Tar Heels, led by first-year head coach John Bunting, finished 8-5 overall, 5-3 (3rd) in the Atlantic Coast Conference and earned their first bowl trip since 1998. It was the 10th winning season in the last 11 years.

Carolina dropped its first three games to Oklahoma, Maryland and Texas before put-ting together a five-game win streak that included a 41-9 rout of Florida State and a dominating 38-3 victory at Clemson. The FSUgame was Bunting’s first win at Carolina and was UNC’s first win over the Seminoles in 13 meetings. After falling to Georgia Tech and Wake Forest, Carolina closed the regular season with wins over Duke and SMU to earn the Peach Bowl bid.

BUNTING WINS THE MOST OF ANY FIRST-YEAR TAR HEEL COACH

Head coach John Bunting won more games (8) in his first season at North Carolina than any other first-year coach in school history. Carl Torbush (1998) and Carl Snavely (1934) each won seven games in their first seasons. Bunting, a 1972 North Carolina graduate, was the first for-mer letterwinner to coach the Tar Heels since 1956.

PEPPERS WINS LOMBARDI TROPHY & BEDNARIK AWARD

Defensive end Julius Peppers became the first Tar Heel to win a major college football award when he was named the 2001 Rotary Lombardi Award winner in Houston on Dec. 5. The Lombardi Trophy is given annually to the nation’s best lineman. Peppers beat out fellow defensive ends Dwight Freeney of Syracuse and Alex Brown of Florida for the honor.

A day after winning the Lombardi Trophy, Peppers flew to Orlando where he was presented the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation’s top over-all defensive player.

Peppers also was named the Chevrolet National Defensive Player of the Year and was one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which is given to the nation’s top overall defensive player by the Charlotte Touchdown Club.

In 2001, Peppers had 63 tackles, including 19 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. He also led the team in interceptions. Peppers finished his three-year Carolina career second on the school’s all-time list in sacks (30.5) and tackles for losses (53).

PEPPERS UNANIMOUS ALL-AMERICA; JERSEY WILL HANG IN KENAN STADIUM

Peppers was a unanimous All-America selection and his No. 49 jersey will be added to the facade of Kenan Stadium in 2002. He is just the second unanimous first-team All-America in school history and the first since Lawrence Taylor in 1980. He was named first-team All-America by the Associated Press, The Sporting News, Football News, Walter Camp Football Foundation, American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and CNNSI.com. Peppers is the first Tar Heel to be named consensus first-team All-America at UNC since defensive end Greg Ellis, linebacker Brian Simmons and cornerback Dre’Bly earned that honor in 1997.

PEPPERS, SIMS AMONG FIRST SIX NFL DRAFT PICKS

Defensive linemen Julius Peppers and Ryan Sims were two of the top six picks in the 2002 NFLDraft. Peppers was the No. 2 overall pick by the Carolina Panthers and Sims was taken with the sixth pick by the Kansas City Chiefs. Peppers and Sims were among six Tar Heels selected. Linebacker David Thornton was taken in the fourth round by Indianapolis, while Joey Evans, Ronald Curry and Quincy Monk were picked in the sev-enth round. There were more players taken in the NFL Draft from North Carolina than any other school in the country.

THORNTON ONE OF BEST STORIES David Thornton, a former walk-on who was awarded a scholarship prior to the start of the 2001 season, blossomed into one of the Tar Heels’top playmakers on defense in 2001. Thornton led the team with 131 total tackles, was second with 10 tackles for loss and third with three sacks. He had double digits in tackles in seven games this season, including a season-high 17 against Wake Forest. He entered the 2001 season with just 24 career tackles, including 16 tackles as a special teams player in 2000.

Thornton was voted UNC’s defensive MVPand earned second-team All-ACC honors and he was selected in the fourth round of the 2002 NFLDraft by the Indianapolis Colts.

AIKEN COMPLETES BREAKOUT SEASON

Junior wide receiver Sam Aiken had eight touch -down catches in 2001, just one shy of the school record of nine set by Marcus Wall in 1994. Aiken had one touchdown catch against FSU, East Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest and two touch -down receptions against both Georgia Tech and Duke. The Kenansville, N.C., native led the team with 46 catches for 789 yards, a team-leading 17.6 yards per catch. Aiken was fifth in the ACC in receiving yards per game.

TAR HEELS TIE TD PASS RECORD Carolina quarterbacks threw 25 touchdown pass-es in 2001, tying the school record pass-established in 1996. Darian Durant had 17 touchdown passes and Ronald Curry had eight. Curry’s 43-yard pass to Chesley Borders in the SMU game tied the record. In 1996, Chris Keldorf tossed a single-season school-record 23 touchdown passes and Oscar

Carolina’s 239.3 yards passing per game was the fourth-highest per game average in school history and the most since the 1997 Tar Heels set the school record with 261.8 yards a game. DURANT HAS IMPRESSIVE FRESH -MAN CAMPAIGN

Redshirt freshman quarterback Darian Durant had one of the best offensive seasons in UNC his-tory despite starting just two games and splitting time with Ronald Curry in 11 games.

In 2001, Durant established Carolina freshman records for touchdown passes (17), completions (142), passing yards (1,843) and total offense (1,971).

Durant’s 17 touchdown passes were the third-highest single-season total in UNC history. Chris Keldorf set the school record with 23 TD passes in 1996 and Matt Kupec had 18 touchdown passes in 1979.

Durant was second in the ACCand 12th in the nation in pass efficiency (149.29). Florida State redshirt freshman Chris Rix was the only freshman in the country with a better efficiency rating (156.6). Durant completed 63.7 percent (142 of 223) of his attempts.

Durant was named the ACC’s Rookie of the Week six times and finished second behind Chris Rix for ACCRookie of the Year honors. CURRY’S RECORD-BREAKING CAREER

Ronald Curry had an outstanding career at UNC. Curry holds UNCcareer records for total offense, passing yards, rushing yards by a quarterback and rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. He also is second in career pass completion and fourth in touchdown passes. In 2000, he established a sin-gle-season school record with 2,676 total yards.

Curry started 10 games in 2001 and was 62 of 134 passes for 1,005 yards and eight touchdowns. He also rushed for 253 yards and three touch-downs.

He earned offensive MVPhonors in the 1998 Las Vegas Bowl and the 2001 Peach Bowl. WIDE RECEIVERS COME UP BIG

After struggling earlier in 2001, Carolina’s wide receivers made significant strides in the final two months of the season. After scoring no touch-downs in the first three games of the year, Carolina’s top three receivers – Sam Aiken, Kory Bailey and Bosley Allen – scored 18 touchdowns in the next eight games.

In addition, a UNC receiver had at least 100 yards receiving in four of the last five games. Allen had back-to-back 100-yard games at Clemson and vs. Georgia Tech and Sam Aiken had back-to-back 100-yard games vs. Wake Forest and Duke.

Three Tar Heel receivers made at least 39 recep-tions, including 46 by Sam Aiken, 44 by Kory Bailey and 39 by Bosley Allen. The last time Carolina had three receivers with at least 30 catch-es was in 1997. It was just the second time Carolina has ever had two receivers with at least 40 receptions. The other was in 1995 when Leon Johnson, a tailback, had 54 catches and wide receiver Octavus Barnes had 53.

UNC LEADS THE ACC IN TOTAL DEFENSE

Carolina ranked first in the ACCand 15th in the nation in total defense in 2001, allowing just 305.3 yards per contest. The Tar Heels were also first in the conference and eighth in the nation in pass effi-ciency defense. In other ACCdefensive categories, Carolina was first in pass defense (yards per game), second in opponents’third-down conversions, third in rushing defense, and third in scoring defense. Carolina has finished first in the ACCin total defense 12 times. The last time Carolina was No. 1 in total defense was 1997.

Carolina held both Florida State and NC State to just nine points in wins during the 2001 season. It was just the fifth time since 1982 that the Seminoles had been held to less than 10 points.

Defending national champion Oklahoma capitalized on five first-half turnovers to build a 41-7 lead, then held off a late charge by North Carolina to post a 41-27 season-opening win in the Hispanic College Classic.

Carolina aided the Sooners’ cause by losing four fumbles and an interception in the opening quar-ter and a half. Oklahoma returned a fumble, inquar-terception and kickoff for touchdowns in the first half.

The Tar Heels dominated the national champions in the second half and finished the game with a statistical advantage in first downs and total offense yards. Carolina gained 290 yards to 286 for the Sooners and had 20 first downs, eight more than Oklahoma.

The Sooners’286 yards were the fewer than any total they had in their 2000 national title season. Carolina’s defense, led by end Julius Peppers and linebacker David Thornton, did not allow Oklahoma to score a point on its last nine possessions.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Darian Durant came off the bench to rally the Tar Heels in the second half. Durant completed 12 of 26 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns and added another 39 yards on the ground. Durant was Carolina’s leading ground gainer, as well.

The Sooners jumped out to a 17-0 lead just 3:39 into the game. Carolina fumbled on the second play, leading to a 25-yard field goal by Tim Duncan.

Oklahoma then went 46 yards on three plays, capped by a 4-yard run by Quinton Griffin. The Tar Heels fumbled the ensuing kickoff and OU recovered at the UNC 19-yard line. Four plays later, Renaldo Works scored from seven yards out and it was 17-0 Oklahoma with 11:21 to play in the first quarter.

Just over seven minutes later, UNC tailback Andre’ Williams fum-bled and OU All-America linebacker Rocky Calmus scooped up the loose ball and raced 14 yards for a touchdown and a 24-0 lead.

Peppers got the Tar Heels on the board with 1:48 to play in the first when he intercepted a screen pass and dashed 29 yards for a score, his second career interception return for a touchdown.

However, the Sooners’promptly answered as Antwone Savage took a short kickoff and went 88 yards for a score and a 31-7 lead.

Early in the second quarter, Oklahoma cornerback Derrick Strait intercepted a Ronald Curry pass and raced 47 yards for another score.

Oklahoma tacked on its final points of the first half, and as it turned out, the game, on a 22-yard field goal by Duncan. That score followed yet another UNC turnover, this time a fumbled snap at UNC’s own 3-yard line.

The Tar Heels scored the game’s final 20 points. Cornerback Michael Waddell returned a punt 89 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter to cut Oklahoma’s lead to 41-14. The return was the second-longest in Carolina history.

Durant took over for Curry at quarterback on the third series of the second half. He connected with Chesley Borders on a 26-yard TD pass early in the fourth quarter. Borders caught ball over the middle and raced around the corner for the score.

On Carolina’s next possession, Durant led the Tar Heels to the end zone again. On 4th-and-10 at the Sooner 45, Durant found Kory

Bailey for 42 yards. Two plays later, Durant hit Brandon Russell for a touchdown. Thornton led the Carolina defensive stand in the second half. Thornton had 13 tackles, four of which were for negative yardage, including one quarterback sack.

Defensive end Julius Peppers intercepted this pass and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown at Oklahoma.

(13)

Sophomore tailback Bruce Perry rushed for 116 yards and punter Brooks Barnard won the field position battle as he aver-aged 50.4 yards per punt in lead-ing the Maryland Terrapins to a 23-7 win over the Tar Heels. It was the ACC opener for both schools.

Barnard was the game’s most valuable performer as he repeatedly pinned Carolina deep in its own territory. He dropped six of his eight punts inside the 20-yard line and forced the Tar Heels to begin drives at their own 1, 9, 10, 14, 11 and 16-yard lines. Carolina’s average starting field position for the game was its own 22-yard line.

For the second consecutive week, UNC gained more total offense yards, yet lost by double figures. At Oklahoma, five first-half turnovers led to defeat. At Maryland, an ineffective offense and poor field position resulted in the loss.

Carolina outgained the Terps, 276-247. The Tar Heels gained 4.4 yards per play and held the Terps to just 3.4 yards per snap.

However, Maryland had 17 first downs, seven more than UNC. The Tar Heels scored on their first play from scrimmage as sopho-more tailback Willie Parker raced around left end and split the second-ary for 77 yards and a touchdown. It was Parker’s longest career carry, equaled the 17th-longest in Carolina history, and was the longest run by a Tar Heel since 1993.

It was, unfortunately, 28 percent of Carolina’s total yardage output for the entire game.

Two series later, Maryland pulled even, converting two third downs en route to a 20-yard scoring pass from Shaun Hill to wideout Jafar Williams. The scoring drive followed a 53-yard Barnard punt that the Terps killed at the 1-yard line. Carolina had to punt from its own end zone, and the Terps took over at the UNC 32. Facing 3rd-and-12 from the 20, Hill hit Williams on a drag route and Williams raced past cor-nerback Errol Hood to the end zone for the score.

The Terps took the lead for good early in the second quarter. Barnard dropped another punt at the UNC 10-yard line and Carolina was penalized back to the 5. On third down, safety Tyrone Stewart broke past the blocking and tripped Parker in the end zone for a safe-ty.

Neither team was able to effectively move the ball over the next two quarters. Redshirt freshman Darian Durant replaced Ronald Curry at quarterback midway through the third period, and completed his first three pass attempts for 27 yards. His next throw, however, on 4th-and-4 from the Maryland 38, was intercepted by safety Tony Jackson.

The Terps marched 65 yards in 10 plays and scored on a 5-yard pass from Hill to Scooter Monroe. The key play of the scoring drive was a 12-yard run by Perry on 3rd-and-5 from the Carolina 19.

Durant was intercepted on a tipped ball on the ensuing possession, giving the Terps the ball on their own 46-yard line. Maryland went 54 yards in eight plays for the game-clinching touchdown. Hill converted another third down by rushing for 11 yards on an option run. Marc Riley capped the drive by scoring from a yard out.

The loss marred another fine effort by Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers, who had four tackles for losses for 21 yards, including three

quarterback sacks for 19 yards. Hood also had a career-high 15 tack-les, including three behind the line of scrimmage.

Parker finished with 102 yards on 13 carries, although he had just 25 yards on his last

12 attempts. It was Parker’s second career 100-yard game; he had 158 against the Terrapins in 2000. Durant was 10 for 14 for 97 yards and two intercep-tions. Curry com-pleted 6 of 12 for 61 yards and one interception.

For the second straight game Carolina did not force a turnover.

77-Texas scored 30 unanswered points over the final 35 minutes and held Carolina to just 211 total yards as the Longhorns defeated the Tar Heels, 44-14, before 83,106 fans.

Nathan Vasher set a Texas school record by returning eight UNC punts for 153 yards, including a backbreaking, 44-yard return for a touchdown early in the fourth quar-ter.

Dusty Mangum kicked three field goals for the Longhorns, includ-ing a 51-yarder and a pair of late second-quarter kicks that gave Texas a 20-14 lead at halftime.

Texas scored in a variety of ways, although Carolina held the Longhorns’highly-regarded passing game without a touchdown. Texas benefitted from an interception return for a touchdown, a punt return for a score, a long punt return that set up a short rushing touch-down and a safety.

It was the second straight game in which the Tar Heels had allowed a safety.

Simms completed 17 of 35 passes for only 167 yards. His longest completions of the day were 19-yarders to wideouts Roy Williams and Sloan Thomas.

The Longhorns gained 326 yards, despite converting just four of 15 third-down chances.

The Longhorns took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when defensive end Cory Redding intercepted Ronald Curry’s pass and dashed 22 yards down the sideline for the score.

Texas forced Carolina to punt on the ensuing possession, and Vasher returned it 59 yards to the Tar Heel 5-yard line. Two plays later, Simms dove in from the one for a 14-0 lead.

UNC promptly answered with a long touchdown drive to cut the

Texas lead in half. Curry hit three long passes – for 13 yards to Chesley Borders, 20 yards to Sam Aiken and 27 yards to Borders – and scored on a dazzling, 20-yard run through the heart of the Texas defense.

Early in the second quarter, Vasher fumbled a John Lafferty punt. UNC fullback Madison Hedgecock recovered the ball at the Longhorn 17-yard line. Andre’ Williams, who finished the day with 50 yards, gained eight and nine yards on back-to-back plays to tie the game at 14.

Texas special teams and defense dominated from that point forward, however. Vasher set up a Mangum field goal with a 31-yard punt return. Mangum added 49-yarder as the second quarter ended to send Texas to the locker room with a 20-14 advantage.

Carolina forced the Longhorns to punt on their first two series of the third quarter, but Texas upped its lead to 26-14 on a 12-play, 89-yard march later in the third quarter. The Longhorns cashed in on two of their four third-down conversions on the drive, which was capped by a 7-yard touchdown run by Cedric Benson.

Texas added a field goal, safety, punt return for touchdown, and touchdown run after an interception to provide the final margin. The Longhorns tacked on their final points of the day on a 12-yard run with 36 seconds to play.

Carolina converted just three of 16 third-down opportunities and allowed five quarterback sacks.

Tailback Andre’ Williams tied the score at 14 early in the second quarter with this 9-yard touchdown run.

(15)

Darian Durant passed for two scores, Ronald Curry threw for a touchdown and ran for another and Julius Peppers led a Carolina defense that allowed just 34 second-half yards as the Tar Heels whipped sixth-ranked Florida State, 41-9.

The contest was UNC’s first home game of the season and came a week after its game against SMU was postponed due to the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.

The win was John Bunting’s first as UNC’s head coach and was Carolina’s first in 13 meetings with the Seminoles. The loss was Florida State’s third in ACC competition and the Seminoles’worst regular-season defeat in 16 years.

Durant and Curry combined to throw for 232 yards and three touch-downs. Carolina amassed 301 total yards and held the Seminoles to just 224 yards, 190 of which came in the first two quarters.

It was just the fifth time in Florida State’s last 235 games the Seminoles were held to less than 10 points.

The Tar Heels forced five turnovers, registered five quarterback sacks and held the Seminoles to just four of 16 on third down conver-sions.

Peppers dominated the line of scrimmage as he made 10 tackles, including four for losses, one of which was his 25th career sack, and had an interception, his second of the season.

The game began with a dominant defensive presence on both sides as the first six offensive posses-sions failed to pro-duce a first down. The Seminoles did record a first down on their fourth series, but on the ensuing play, Carolina linebacker Quincy Monk stripped FSU quar-terback Chris Rix of the ball after an 11-yard run and the Tar Heels took over at their 39-yard line.

Freshman Darian Durant marched UNC 61 yards in nine plays for the game’s first score. He found Sam

Aiken for seven yards and a key first down on a

3rd-and-4 play from the FSU 27. On the next play, Durant hit Aiken in the right flat and Aiken somersaulted into the end zone for a 7-0 lead. It was Carolina’s first lead over the Seminoles since 1993.

Midway through the second quarter, Rix dodged a corner blitz and found Talman Gardner for a 29-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. The Seminoles then forced UNC to punt, but center Greg Warren snapped the ball out of the end zone for a safety and a 9-7 Seminole lead.

The second half was all Carolina, but the biggest play of the game may have come on the second play of the third quarter. Durant was intercepted by cornerback Stanford Samuels, but UNC fullback Madison Hedgecock forced Samuels to fumble and tailback Andre’ Williams recovered to return the ball to the Tar Heels. Five plays later, Durant found Chesley Borders wide open for a 52-yard touchdown to give Carolina the lead for good.

A pair of Jeff Reed field goals in the third quarter increased UNC’s lead to 20-9. The two field goals were sandwiched around a holding penalty by Florida State that wiped out an 85-yard touchdown pass by Rix.

Curry extended the lead to 27-9 when he scrambled away from pressure and threw an off-balance pass to Kory Bailey for a 53-yard score early in the final quarter.

Carolina added touchdown runs by Williams (11 yards) and Curry (one yard).
