DAY 4 ENGLISH: Thursday 28th January KQ: Can I write a short story?

Miss Hughes and the Secret of Rain

It was yet another scorching, hot day in the small Kenyan village. The sun was beating down onto the golden, yellow,

burning sand. A young, happy girl called Miss Hughes lived there with her family in a quaint mud hut. They wished that the sun would stop shining one day. They couldn’t do their jobs such as milk the cow, collect firewood or plant crops. The villagers spent their whole days hiding in their homes to protect themselves from the fiery sun. Everybody was exhausted. It was just too hot! Miss Hughes needed to do something to help.

One boiling hot night, Miss Hughes heard her mother chatting with her friends about the crops and trees that were dying. Miss

Hughes knew she had to do something to help. The next morning, Miss Hughes went to find her grandfather. He was telling her all about a special story. He said that Lila would be able to make it rain. Could this be true? Miss Hughes took the long walk home down the winding path thinking about the secret her grandfather had told her. She knew it would make everybody so happy if she could make it rain.

The first stage in the life cycle of most plants is a seed.

Seeds come in all shapes and sizes. Every plant has a

(10)

Seeds and Bulbs

Every single seed has the beginnings of a new plant inside it, along with a little store of food to help it grow.

When the conditions are right, the seed soaks up water and swells, and the tiny new plant bursts out of its shell. This is called germination.

Embryo:

The tiny root and shoot which will grow into the adult plant.

Seed Coat:

A tough outer covering.

A store of food for the young plant to use until it has grown enough to make its own food.

(12)

Seeds and Bulbs

Some plants grow first from a seed, and then develop a bulb that helps them to grow back year after year.

A bulb lets the plant rest underground over the winter when it is too cold, then grow back later in the year when conditions are right.

Future flower stored inside the bulb for protection. Tunic: A papery outer covering. Scales: Thick leaves that store the food. Roots Stem

We are going to plant a seed some seeds and put them in different conditions, so we can compare how they

(15)

What Do Plants

Need to Grow?

Seeds and bulbs need to wait for conditions to be just right before seeds can germinate and bulbs can sprout new growth. What do you think that our plants will need so they can sprout and grow well?

(16)

Planting

If you were at school, we would set up a

comparative test.

In our comparative test, we would plant the same seeds, and compare how they grow under different conditions.

This would help us to learn what plants need to grow well.

Watch this video to help you to

understand what plants need to grow well.

(17)

For the comparative test, we

would need…

You will need:

• 4 test seeds

• 4 plant pots

(18)

Fill your pot half full of soil. Cover the seeds with more soil. Plant the seed in the soil.

This is what we would do…

What conditions does each plant need? Where should they go?
