James E. Terry

Executive Vice President & C.O.O. Rocky Mountaineer Vacations

Thank you for choosing Rocky Mountaineer Vacations. We are honoured that you have included us in your Canadian travel plans.

The preparation and anticipation of a trip are part of the enjoyment of travelling. We have created this Travel Guide to help you get the most out of your vacation. You will find answers to the questions guests ask most frequently and helpful tips and details about your Rocky Mountaineer adventure. You may also find our website— rockymountaineer.com—to be a valuable resource. The more you know about Canada’s West and the Canadian Rockies, the more you will appreciate your time with us. We hope the following information provides a deeper understanding of this exceptional destination.

The Rocky Mountaineer

A trip onboard the Rocky Mountaineer takes you over up to seven mountain ranges, across dozens of bridges, through tunnels and alongside numerous waterfalls, lakes and rivers. To ensure that the dramatic vistas are fully enjoyed, the train is scheduled to operate in daylight, with an overnight stay midway in either Kamloops or Quesnel in British Columbia’s interior.

Whether travelling on the Kicking Horse Route, Yellowhead Route or the Fraser Discovery Route you will travel approximately 442 kilometres (275 miles) each day along railways that showcase scenery and landscapes not accessible by any other mode of transportation.

The Rocky Mountaineer travels at an enjoyable pace giving you plenty of time to marvel at the scenery, wildlife and outstanding engineering accomplishments of pioneering railroaders. Our knowledgeable Rocky Mountaineer Onboard Attendants complement the scenery with friendly service and interesting commentary about the region through which you travel. From beginning to end, you will understand why the Rocky Mountaineer, celebrating One Million Guests in 2008, is known as “The Most Spectacular Train Trip in the World.”®

What to Wear and Bring

In Alberta and British Columbia, temperatures vary significantly depending on location, time of day and season. Summer temperatures range from a low of 10°C (50°F) to a high of 40°C (104°F). Kamloops, in particular, may be very warm in the summer while in the alpine regions weather can change dramatically in a short time. Plan to bring a sweater, slacks and a light topcoat or raincoat, as well as lightweight summer wear. Pack sturdy, comfortable shoes, especially if you plan to walk in the mountains. Flat-soled shoes should be worn on the train. Please refer to page 13 for Average Daily High Temperatures. Do not forget your camera or video recorder! You will have plenty of opportunities for photos in the vestibules of the train and while on or off the motorcoaches. Recharging of batteries is not possible on the train. Health Concerns and Assistance

To ensure the preservation of the fragile environment of the areas in which we travel and for the comfort of all guests, there is no smoking onboard

the Rocky Mountaineer or Whistler Mountaineer, including vestibules and Heritage Observation Car, or in the stations. If you have special dietary needs while

onboard the train, we would be pleased to accommodate your request. Simply advise Rocky Mountaineer Vacations directly or your booking agent at least 72 hours in advance of boarding.

Pre-boarding and detraining assistance for guests requiring special assistance is provided at all stations. Please advise us in advance if you require this service. Please note that all pets or animals (excluding guide dogs) are prohibited from travelling onboard the train.

Please, remember to carry your medications with you onboard the train.

Kamloops and Quesnel

All guests overnight in Kamloops* (Kicking Horse and Yellowhead Routes) or Quesnel (Fraser Discovery Route), British Columbia to ensure that the entire rail tour takes place in daylight.

Kamloops is located in the heart of the Thompson Okanagan region of British Columbia between Vancouver and the Canadian Rockies. The name is derived from a Shuswap Indian word meaning “meeting place” because the city is nestled at a point in the valley where the North and South Thompson rivers meet. In July and August, visit Riverside Park to hear “Music in the Park”.

The city of Quesnel is the gateway to the North Cariboo region, with a history dating back to the Cariboo Gold Rush. Numerous shops and restaurants stay open late to afford Rocky Mountaineer guests the opportunity to explore this quaint city.

*Circumstances may necessitate the occasional accommodation change from Kamloops to the nearby resort of Sun Peaks.

Accommodations

You will stay in moderate two or three star accommodation with essential amenities to make your stay comfortable. Please note that Kamloops and Quesnel do not offer accommodation in the superior or deluxe category. You will be advised of your Kamloops or Quesnel accommodation location upon check-in at the rail station. If you require this information sooner, please call our Sales Centre at 1-800-665-7245 (Canada & U.S.A.) or (604) 606-7245 within 30 days of travel.

Hotel Transfer

A Rocky Mountaineer motorcoach will meet the train upon your arrival in Kamloops or Quesnel and transfer you to your accommodation. The following morning you will be transferred by motorcoach back to the station to resume your daylight adventure on the train. You will be fully briefed with details regarding transfers while on the train and motorcoach.

Kamloops

Kamloops and Quesnel Dining

GoldLeaf Service Guests: Dinner at your Kamloops or Quesnel accommodation is included in your package. In Kamloops, optional evening entertainment is available at a reduced price.

RedLeaf Service Guests: Many restaurant options are available in Kamloops and Quesnel. We invite you to enhance your western Canadian experience while in Kamloops with an evening at Two River Junction Musical Revue or The Great Canadian Lumberjack Show.

Kamloops Optional evening entertainment

A dinner and musical revue offering a fun-filled look at Canadian rail history. Enjoy the tale of infamous bandit Billy Miner’s botched train robbery. Watch the fun as local reporter Mary Spencer tries to capture this exciting story, only to find instead that Billy has captured her heart. Over 280,000 guests from around the world have enjoyed this special evening at Two River Junction.

A wild and entertaining evening show featuring an icon of Canada’s West—the lumberjack.

This comedic story features two world-class lumberjacks competing to be the best in town. Recreating the historic world of a logging camp, the local lumberjacks will dazzle and amaze the audience with their skills, tricks and showmanship including axe-throwing and an entertaining log-rolling competition.

To avoid disappointment, reserve your ticket through your booking agent or call us directly at 1-800-665-7245 (Canada & U.S.A.) or (604) 606-7245. Price includes buffet dinner, show, non-alcoholic beverages and motorcoach transfers to and from the show.

West Coast

Vancouver

Surrounded by stunning natural beauty, Vancouver is considered to be one of the most desirable places to live or visit in the world. A cosmopolitan city nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountains, and blessed with green spaces galore, Vancouver is an outdoor playground waiting to be discovered. Vancouver is also home to world-class entertainment, an abundance of first class restaurants and a diverse range of shopping options.

Whistler

Whistler is a vibrant, four-season resort nestled in the Coast Mountains 120 kilometres (75 miles) north of Vancouver. Whistler is best known for Whistler Blackcomb, one of North America’s top-rated ski resorts, however it is fast becoming famous for the multitude of summer activities and outdoor adventure pursuits including rafting, mountain biking, zip-lining and heli-hiking. Vancouver and Whistler are proud to host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Canadian Rockies

The Canadian Rocky Mountains were formed millions of years ago as a result of the slow movement of the earth’s crust and the grinding of massive glaciers, which sculpted the majestic Rockies during four major ice ages. Some of these glaciers measure 2,400 metres (8,000 feet) in thickness. It has been estimated that the oldest rock in the Canadian Rockies is over 600 million years old, and research has indicated that this mountain region was once ocean shoreline.

Banff

The town of Banff is named after Banffshire in Scotland, the birthplace of two major financiers of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The Banff townsite, nestled along the Bow Valley corridor within the national park boundary, continues to be dominated by the baronial and historic Banff Springs Hotel, complete with a luxurious European style spa.

Lake Louise

Known to the Stoney Indians as Lake of the Little Fishes and called Emerald Lake by its first European visitor in 1882, Lake Louise was renamed in 1884 to honour Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, daughter of Queen Victoria. The village of Lake Louise offers a range of lodging, dining and shopping. From the village it is a five-minute drive to the lake itself.

Jasper

Jasper is a small town of 4,700 people tucked away amid the mountains of the Canadian Rockies. Situated on a plateau overlooking the Athabasca Valley, it commands a view of the Colin Range to the east and of the jagged peaks along the Icefield Parkway to the south. Snow-capped Mount Edith Cavell, one of the most prominent mountains, is the centerpiece of the alpine skyline. North of the town, Pyramid Mountain towers above Pyramid and Patricia lakes, popular summer boating, swimming and picnic sites.

Wildlife

The National Parks in the Canadian Rockies are a haven for flora and fauna. At the height of the flowering season, mid-July to mid-August, hundreds of wildflower species bloom in the Rockies. Trees of many different varieties landscape the park. Banff National Park alone is home to 57 mammal species, 265 species of birds, more than 290-odd species of butterflies and 19 fish species. Today, thousands of elk inhabit the parks. You may also see the majestic bighorn sheep, black bears, grizzly bears or moose. Bald eagles and osprey are prevalent along the route as well.
