Twenty-twenty. It’s been a year unprecedented in its tough-ness, particularly for our region’s most treasured industry. It’s an industry that enriches the lives of wine producers and their staff as well as ours, the wine lovers. Instead of imbib-ing our favourite potion, we had to swallow government decrees that denied us access to our favourite elixir of life. The effects of lockdown and the follow-up restrictions on the industry are manifested in the slimness of this guide. But we are resilient, and our default national character is to rise to the challenge and make a plan. The plan is to tempt you to quench your thirst by allowing this guide to lead you to the life-affirming places listed – the wineries, vineyards, estates, boutique wineries, wine shops – perhaps even take off on a private wine tour of the Overberg. The Overberg terroir excites wine lovers as each area’s particular charac-teristic results in distinctive wines that can bring pleasure to every palate.

Not only are the wines distinctive, but also the landscape. Travel (using this guide) from the cool climate of Elgin to the sunny plains of Bot River, up the Hemel-en-Aarde valley in Hermanus with its cool maritime-kissed wines, to Stanford for a heady experience and not to miss the flinty Agulhas plains. You’ll not have a dull moment at the wineries here in the Overberg, where you’ll find fine hospitality and meet

Established in 1989 in the temperate Hemel-en-Aarde Valley on 125 hectares (312 acres) of Walker Bay’s prime viticultural land, Bouchard Finlayson Vineyard and Winery is a small cellar dedicated to the production of quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Ever since releasing their first vintages, the name Bouchard Finlayson has been internationally synonymous with excellence. Today, owned by the Red Carnation Hotels’ Tollman family and under the leadership of Victoria Tollman, founder Peter Finlayson and winemaker Chris Albrecht, 25 hectares (62 acres) of the estate are currently under vine with 50% devoted to the varietal for which Peter is most acclaimed – Pinot Noir.

Other cultivars under production include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Mourvédre and Barbera. With ingredients such as old world experience, new world innovation, winemaking talent, intelligent experimentation, the natural beauty of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, and a terroir and climate that is conducive to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Bouchard Finlayson is the ultimate recipe for truly exceptional experiences and prized memories.

Bouchard Finlayson is a World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Conservation Champion.

The Wines: Blanc de Mer, Walker Bay Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc Reserve, Missionvale Chardonnay, Crocodiles Lair / Kaaimansgat Chardonnay, Sans Barrique Chardonnay, Hannibal, Galpin Peak Pinot Noir, Tete de Cuvee Pinot Noir.

BOSMAN

FAMILY VINEYARDS

The Wines: Generation 8: Chenin Blanc, Rosé, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon. Upper Hemel-en-Aarde: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Magnum Opus Pinot Noir, Loose Cannon MCC.Single Vineyard: Fides Grenache Blanc, Optenhorst Chenin Blanc, Twyfeling Cinsaut. Fairtrade: Bosman Adama Red & Bosman Adama White. Nero D’Avola, Erfenis, Soet Steen, Dolce Primitivo, Bosman Pinotage, Bosman Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Bosman Family has a history of choosing a different path, of challenging themselves to find a solution in the unexpected. This family has been propagating vines and making wine in the Bovlei region of Wellington for 8 generations. But true to form, they went in search of a cool climate vineyard that would complement the ‘terroir’ of the Bovlei. The Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley proved just the answer. One of the largest producers of vines to the wine and grape industry, the Bosmans were also looking for a suitable site on which to propagate. In fact, a visit to this farm is a treat all round. The Frame House is a wooden structure housing the wine-tasting venue belonging to Bosman Family Vineyards, on their farm in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Hermanus. Soak up the views from the veranda or for the more adventurous, amble up the mountain paths to absorb the stillness broken only by the rustling bushes and soft bird call. Experience the Koppie and Wetlands trails laid out by well‐known conservationist Frank Woodvine and his team. The trails wind their way through a number of habitats from farmland to fynbos & renosterveld. A healthy and relaxing activity for the whole family to enjoy.

(10)

Once a place of refuge and healing, Vrede Farm has been owned by the Lötter family since 1978 when they initiated agricultural processes. All the grapes are grown on the 30ha farm, on shale derived clay soils and elegantly put together by winemaker Hannes Storm. A taste of true passion.

Our wine philosophy is that of simplicity and minimal interference with a focus of showcasing the terroir and varietal. We believe our wines will develop beautifully with age, but are elegant enough to be enjoyed with abondon.

Die Plaaskombuis is a traditional South African Farm Kitchen, surrounded by breathtaking views and by true farm hospitality. With hard work, commitment and pride, the Lötter Family have built a successful family restaurant on the Hemel-en-Aarde Wine Route and now also home to Lötter Family Wines.

Die Plaaskombuis is a place where family and friends meet and wine lovers relax and enjoy a homey, farm feel atmosphere and welcoming experience.

Die Plaaskombuis@Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is the per-fect function venue for corporate and private affairs, weddings and birthday celebrations and can seat up to 150 guests.

The Wines: Chardonnay 2019, Sauvignon Blanc 2018, Grenache Rosé 2018, Syrah Mourvedre Grenache versnit 2018, Syrah 2017, Pinot Noir 2018.

ESTATE WINES

The Wines: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Maritimus (white blend), Epitome (red blend), Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Rosé, Wayfarer MCC.

The Bellingham Turner family is the proud owner of this beautiful wine estate with its reputation for producing exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Spectacular sea views dominate the panoramic scene from the balcony of the Sumaridge tasting room, clearly demonstrating this premium boutique producer’s proximity to the Atlantic ocean; a unique, and defining element in the creation of their award-winning wines. The views also show the integration of fynbos within the vineyards, where rows of vines grow alongside indigenous plants, a sharing of the natural habitat that not only conserves vegetation, but also encourages natural pollination. All wine made, maturated and bottled on this estate is made from grapes grown on the farm, making every bottle a true ‘Estate’ wine. The winemaking team can be seen at work, in the cellar or in the fields, from the windows in the tasting room. The beautifully appointed tasting room and dining room optimise the spectacular views over their dam, down to the ocean and across to the mountains. A variety of light and delicious platters (including one for little guests) are available at lunchtime, and can be enjoyed in the dining room, on the balcony or out on the lawns.

Nestled below the fynbos-covered mountains is the winery and restaurant, which were masterfully designed to fit seamlessly into the landscape. Constructed of striking brick, steel and timber, the large windows frame the beautiful valley below and the Atlantic Ocean in the distance.

The origin of the name Spookfontein (Ghost Fountain) dates back to the 1800s and can be attributed to the small natural spring found on the farm in the mountains above the vineyards.

The winery produces stunning, character-driven wines, every aspect thereof closely monitored by viticulturist Andries Gotze and winemaker Sol Yerden Eksteen. Being a small cellar, Spookfontein has the time to put a little extra love and devotion into their work. Join them at their tasting room for a taste of the superb wines the Upper Hemel-and-Aarde Valley produce. The menu at the restaurant is a take on contemporary country cooking, where rustic comfort food is given a new updated persona on the plate. When combined with the stunning views and the wine, Spookfontein becomes the farm for long languid lunches in the Hemel-en-Aarde.

If you are looking for the most magical spot to break away there are two cottages at Spookfontein, nested between vineyard and mountain, each sleeping four people.

A warm welcome awaits you at Seven Springs. The wines at Seven Springs Vineyard express purity and character. They stay true to their varietals (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Pinot Noir), climate and soils and we invite you to come and taste.

Famed for the production of Burgundian varietals, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the R320 Hemel-en-Aarde Valley road, gives Seven Springs Vigneron, Augustus (Gus) Dale, the opportunity to showcase his talent. The tasting experience will be informal and informative, warm and welcoming.

The old-world charm of this unique village confirms that the most important attributes of our world are healthy. It’s those important ones, like beauty, kindness and tranquillity, that flourish here. Life is slow paced, and you need to be in a corresponding mood to experience the magic. Don’t take a speedboat down the river, rather book a sunset birdwatching cruise where you chug-chug down the lazy water and catch your breath at the magnificence around you. Winemakers on the Stanford Wine Route offer exceptional quality wines and a warm welcome to visitors.

To Swellendam Here, at the southernmost tip of Africa, a completely different experience awaits you. It is wild with a harsh, windswept landscape where the winemakers are challenged to produce their distinctive, excellent wines. The magnificent beauty of far horizons command you to stay a while, to explore, to stay on a farm, to hike in a private reserve, or to think of the Aegean while swimming in Arniston’s warm turquoise seas.

Strandveld Vineyards is the southernmost cellar on the African continent. Braving constant winds off the Atlantic, we craft two award-winning ranges of wine: First Sighting and Strandveld. First Sighting wines fully express the terroir of the Elim ward, where varying soil types and relentless winds off the Atlantic ensure slow ripening, modest yields and intense flavours. The Strandveld Vineyards’ range is crafted from grapes grown in specific soils – yellow ferricrete for the Sauvignon Blanc and white quartzite for the Syrah. These wines are the ultimate expression of the place and time of their creation. Strandveld is a founder member of the Nuwejaars River Wetland Special Management Area, which has re-introduced buffalo and hippo to the Agulhas plains.

Off the beaten track, Sijnn (pr. Say-n) Winery is situated near the mouth of the Breede River, close to the hamlet of Malgas, now an official viticultural ward. Sijnn vineyards are based on soils with a combination of pudding stones and Bokkeveld shale. All bush vines, grapes are hand-picked, wines are naturally fermented, basket pressed, and matured in French oak barrels. The wine is unfined, unfiltered, and bottled by hand on the estate under the careful watch of young winemaker, Charla Haasbroek.

The cellar, built of local stone, overlooks the river, vineyards and natural Renosterveld kloof. One can enjoy a wine tasting and vintner’s platter when visiting Sijnn Winery.

The Wines: Sijnn Red, Sijnn White, Sijnn Saignee and Low Profile.

TREDICI

swellendam

Tredici is the Italian way of saying Baker’s Dozen – a belief dating back to the 13th century. Way back then bakers would illustrate their honesty by always offering their customers more than the law required, and never less. So, instead of 12 loaves in a dozen, customers would receive 13, and when purchasing only 12 measures, 13 would be given. It is this commitment to always offer more than you’d expect, that inspires everything we do here at Tredici. From the moment you walk through our imposing 4-metre high doors, to the minute you savour one of our delectable dishes, you will experience sumptuous simplicity. It is reflected in our architecture and interior, inspired by local Cape Dutch elements and combined with the best of chic French and warm Italian styles to create the perfect backdrop for you to enjoy our freshly prepared, handmade delicacies.Sumptuous simplicity is also evident in our menu – from quick bites prepared with love and attention, to a delicatessen stocked with baked goods that took as long as 36 hours to prepare, to our restaurant offering the best European cuisine personalized with African flair.

So whether you stop off to stretch your legs and stock up on delicious padkos for your onward journey, join us for dinner with friends, or book our venue for your special occasion or conference, you can be sure to experience the Tredici way of life, where generosity is guaranteed and smiles are genuine.

The Overberg coastline boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The super white sands of Grotto beach are excellent for long walks and the grassed and terraced Voëlklip beach is safe for the young and old. Kammabaai is perfect for body boarding. Onrus as well as Voelklip are favourite surfing spots. Sandbaai has lovely little coves for snorkeling and is dotted with marine pools. Brekfis Bay is near the Vermont Nature Reserve and is a quiet picnic spot. Hawston and Kleinmond also have two long stretches of beach which are perfect for beach hikes. www.hermanustourism.info

BEACHES

The African (or Jackass) Penguins’ breeding ground at Stony Point is near an old abandoned whaling station. It is one of only two shore-based breeding colonies in South Africa with the more famous breeding colony at Boulders Beach near Simonstown.

The best times to view the birds are early in the morning or late in the afternoon when they return from their 20-kilometre fishing expeditions. A wooden boardwalk takes visitors directly to the nesting burrows. Also sharing the breeding site with the penguins are the endangered Whitebreasted and Cape Cormorants and the vulnerable Bank Cormorant.

Please do not approach them.

The Cliff Path walk meanders for almost 11 kilometres starting at the New Harbour and ending at Grotto Beach. The path can be accessed anywhere along the main road and Marine Drive and offers the most beautiful vistas of Walker Bay, the breaking waves, whales in season and a huge variety of fynbos. It is completely safe as there are guards all along the way but after dark walks are not encouraged. Wheelchair and pushchair friendly sections have been created wherever possible.
