How to Get Involved

Every summer in July we stop as a church to focus on a major theological theme. Our summer series allows us to explore the details of a theological category with the hopes that it adds to our general understanding of redemption. This summer we’re focusing on the Holy Spirit. If there is any subject which raises questions and lends itself to mystery it’s the Holy Spirit. This should be fun!

The theology series is intended to be interactive. We’re trying to start a conversation throughout the church. There are numerous ways for you to engage all of which are contained in this booklet. You can 1) Start interacting with the recommended resources before the series begins, 2) Participate in our Home Fellowship Group discussions oriented around the Holy Spirit, 3) Submit questions for our Q&A service the last Sunday of the series, 4) Attend our Saturday breakfasts the month of July, 5) Read ahead in this booklet to familiarize yourself with the major biblical passages and the subject matters to come, 6) Visit our webpage dedicated to this series to peruse all sorts of material and information on the subject, including several special Theocast episodes on the Holy Spirit, and 7) Pray for the church and the series!!

Glossary

Pneumatology: The study of the Holy Spirit. One of the original, biblical terms for the Holy Spirit is pneuma. A literal translation of the term is wind or breath. The English word pneumatic is derived from this term.

Trinitarianism: The study of the nature and relationship of the triune Godhead.

Pentecostalism: A reference to that branch of denominations within evangelicalism that believes in the manifestation of miraculous gifts. Specifically, Pentecostals believes that speaking in tongues is necessary for salvation.

Charismaticism: Generally, a non-denominational category of thinking which sees that miraculous gifts are normative for the church. There is a particular emphasis on the gift of tongues. Charismatics, unlike Pentecostals, do not believe tongues are necessary for salvation.

Cessationism: The belief that the miraculous gifts have ceased. Continuationism: The belief that the miraculous gifts continue. Modalism: A view of the Godhead which denies a triune existence. God has manifested Himself in three difference forms over time and creation; God, Son & Spirit. Modalists refuse to baptize in the name of the “Father, Son and Spirit” because they believe He is only manifested as Spirit in the church age.

QUESTIONS YOU HAVE

(11)

July 9 & 10

1. Is there a particular action one must take in order to be filled with the Holy Spirit? 2. What is the evidence of the work of the Holy Spirit?

3. If a Holy God cannot be in the presence of sin, and the Holy Spirit IS God, how can the Holy Spirit reside in us in a corrupt world?

4. If the Holy Spirit is our teacher, what does He want us to learn most? Why was He provided for us?

5. Although the Holy Spirit is equally a part of the Trinity, why is He talked about the least? What are some reasons we might be uncomfortable talking about Him?

July 23 & 24

1. Why did the Holy Spirit only come AFTER Christ’s resurrection, and what was His role prior to Christ’s resurrection?

2. Why don’t we pray to the Holy Spirit if He is fully God just as the other two Persons in the Trinity? We pray to our Heavenly Father, in Jesus’ Name and it seems the Holy Spirit gets left out.

3. What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit, and how/why has it been perverted in more charismatic circles?

4. In Matthew, John the Baptist differentiates between the physical act of baptism and baptism of the Holy Spirit. What does he mean when he says Jesus will baptize with the Holy Spirit?
