Responding to Public Need

Within hours of the September 11, 2001 attacks, ASCE evaluated the Towers’ collapse and Pentagon damage to inform the public about how the structures performed. ASCE’s response culminated in two building performance study reports calling for additional guidance to prepare structures for extreme events.

Today, ASCE’s Critical Infrastructure Response Initiative (CIRI)

coordinates the profession’s participation in national security initiatives, and ASCE is a founding member of The Infrastructure Security

Partnership (TISP), a groundbreaking association of more than 170 multi-industry partners working to secure the nation’s built environment.

ASCE’s response is global. ASCE serves as a leader in the rebuilding of Iraq in two fundamental areas – Capacity Building and Peer Review/ Technical Panels. ASCE’s Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering initiates, organizes, trains for and coordinates post-earthquake investigations around the world.
