A Refl ec on by Fr. James

Beginning last Sunday through the last Sunday of this month, the Gospel is centered on the theme of “Bread of Life.” Last Sunday we heard Jesus feed 5,000 people from fi ve loaves and two fi sh.

This par cular miracle drew special a en on from the people more than all other miracles He performed throughout His ministry on earth. We are told that many people were looking for him and asking him to repeat the loaves and fi shes miracle. The mul plica on of loaves in the Gospel reminded the people about the event in today’s fi rst Reading when God rained down bread/mana from the sky daily. The people saw Jesus as the new Moses so they wanted him to repeat the miracle daily for them like Moses. Jesus understood the deepest desires of the people even more than themselves. He told them He would give them the Bread of Life so those who eat it will never hunger again. This promise was fulfi lled in the ins tu on of the Eucharist.

Human beings need two basic kinds of food to a ain perfect happiness and sa sfac on: food for the body and the food for the soul, the Eucharist. Jesus reminds us to work for the Bread of Life that lasts forever. That is why He says in Ma hew 4:4, “One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” And in John 4:34 He says, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent me and to complete his work.” He mul plied the bread and fi sh only as a sign poin ng to the higher spiritual food, the Eucharist.

Have you ever felt emp ness deep down within you? Do you try drinking, drugs, gambling, or material acquisi on in an a empt to fi nd happiness? Jesus reminds us today that true peace and happiness only comes from God. When we receive Him in the Eucharist, He nourishes us with the Bread of Life and fi lls the emp ness in us so that we will no longer be hungry.

Thank you and remain blessed.

Feast of Faith:

The Preface: Thanksgiving

The preface of the Mass has been called “a poem, the cry of joy and recogni on, the song of the world discovering its salva on . . . the cer tude of faith making hope spring forth” (Philippe Béguerie, quoted in The Mass, Lucien Deiss, The Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN, 1992, p. 70). The preface takes up the last words of the dialogue, and expresses briefl y and simply why we are grateful, why it is right and just to give thanks and praise to God. On feast days, the preface sings of the specifi c mystery or saint we celebrate;

in Ordinary Time, the Sunday and weekday prefaces express our gra tude for God’s gi of the Son, Jesus Christ, in whom we have redemp on and newness of life. The prefaces off er a succinct account of what God has done for us in Christ; they express the mystery of faith, always rela ng it to us, to our lives. “By his birth we are reborn,” we hear in Preface IV for Sundays in Ordinary Time. “By his suff ering we are freed from sin. By his rising from the dead we rise to everlas ng life.” Yes, we have cause to give God thanks and praise.

A Note From The SJB Principal

Dear Parishioners,

I hope you are all having a wonderful summer with family and friends! We have been joyfully preparing for the 2021-2022 school year and I am incredibly excited to begin as the new principal.

I would like to thank Mrs. Anita Pe for her guidance and support during this transi on in leadership. Her willingness to share her wisdom and experience with me during the summer has been a true blessing and her legacy will con nue to guide me throughout the years.

We are all very eager to see the children on August 11 to begin another fabulous year of learning and growing! This is a uniquely exci ng me for our community as we are celebra ng our 20th Anniversary and welcoming parents and volunteers back on campus. We’ve missed them!

We have been busy planning and have made a few adjustments to enhance the safety, learning environment, and quality of educa on for all learners. More details to come.

Un l then, enjoy the remainder of the summer!
