Organizations Unite for the Arts!

Two non-profit organizations; 51Oakland, and The Elevate Hope Foundation,
are pleased to announce their collaborative partnership “ELEVATE OAKLAND,” designed to bring innovative music and arts programs to the underserved youth in the Bay Area beginning with Oakland, CA.
51Oakland, founded by jazz club maven Yoshi Akiba and Jason Hofmann, an Oakland-based entrepreneur and former educator, has focused on providing Oakland students access
to programs, resources, mentoring and training in music and the arts. Notable achievements include Live at Yoshi’s, a regular youth concert series; an Inspirational Speaker Series;
and Artist-in-Residence and Outreach programs.
The Elevate Hope Foundation (EHF), co-founded by Grammy and Emmy-nominated pop icon
Sheila E., an Oakland native and renowned musician, composer, arranger and producer, and Lynn Mabry, a Berkeley native, entertainment manager and accomplished vocalist, is dedicated to provide special needs populations an alternative method of therapy through music and arts education. EHF’s pilot programs have created curriculums and offered experiential creative classes that include music production, recording, songwriting, drumming, choir, art, and videography.
Elevate Oakland’s ultimate goal is to improve academic achievement and increase student attendance by providing creative and relevant curriculums, thus decreasing the drop out rate, enabling graduates to successfully adapt to and become better prepared for college, and providing scholarships for students applying for college or university. Elevate Oakland’s initiatives are being designed to create a continuum for all students to participate in for years to come, serving more schools in Oakland and throughout the Metropolitan Bay Area.

inaugural curriculum at East Oakland’s
Castlemont High School during
the 2013-14 school year.
To maintain, support and expand a wide-ranged
curriculum at Castlemont High School, Elevate Oakland
has helped to provide:
• 5 classes a day of music (Guitar, Beginning Band, Advanced Band, Piano and Choral)
• Artists-in-Residence to assist with classes 2 to 3 times a week
• 2 days a week of Hip Hop dance in partnership with Destiny Arts
• Self actualization through access to recording studios and opportunities to perform at Yoshi’s Jazz Club
Program Initiatives

• Musical equipment and art supplies for applicable courses
• Integration of music and arts programming/ curriculums for students year round
• Financial assistance for existing and new teachers or instructors
• On-campus classroom restoration and remodeling
• New materials and applicable resources for each instructor and their students

• Entertainment professionals for Artists In Residence programs
