FLAT REED & FLAT OVAL REED
For Chairs, Rockers & Stools
Three hanks flat oval or flat reed will do about one seat and one back. In addition to basketry and seat weaving, reed and wide binder are used in the repair and construction of wicker and rattan furniture and accessories.
PRIME ROUND REEDS
These selected smooth and uniform in diameter prime long round reeds are used for basketry, as well as, wicker and rattan furniture repair. You may send sample of size if in doubt. We will match diameter as close as possible. A hank weighs about 1 lb. Strands within the hank vary in length. Also, hanks available in flat and flat oval reeds for hand caning.

MACHINE CANE
Pre-woven cane comes in a roll. It is used in those chair frames which have a groove routed in the seat frame rather than holes drilled. The cane is held into the groove by reed spline and white glue. Choose the size machine cane (mesh) by measuring the hole size and comparing the size to those listed in our booklet. If unsure send us a cutting of the old cane with your order. To determine the measurements of the sheet you need to measure the seat frame (from groove to groove) side to side and front to back adding 2” to each dimension in order to al-low for insertion.

WIDE BINDER CANE
6mm or 1/4” width. This cane is used for herringbone patterns on seat frames. Can be used in place of flat and flat oval reeds to create a strong finely woven pattern on your seat frame. Binder cane is also used as wrapping and repair ma-terial for wicker and rattan furniture. One hank will do approximately an 18x18 seat, weighing about 1 1/4 lbs and 500’ long.
Binder Cane comes in hanks of 500 feet. Binder by the strand is approximately 9 to 11 feet in length.
TAPERED CANING PEGS
$5.69 per dozen
.These hardwood pegs are used in the hand caning process to keep the hand cane snug in its hole and in place until it is tied underneath the seat.
REED SPLINE
Spline is the wedge shaped material used to hold machine cane in the groove. Specify size by measuring across the stop of your sample. If not sure, send a sample or indicate the width of the groove. Spline should always be narrower than the groove to allow for the cane insertion.

HAND STRING CANE
Hand (string) cane is used in those chairs with holes drilled through the perimeter of a seat frame. It is a weaving process done by hand. The process requires tak-ing cane and weavtak-ing it through the holes in the frame while followtak-ing a specific pattern. The last step in the process uses Regular Binder cane to cover the holes for appearance. Wide Binder Cane is used for producing a herringbone pattern on chair frames with four rails and for repairs on wicker and rattan furniture.
When ordering string cane be sure to specify size of cane wanted (i.e. FINE cane). If size is in doubt enclose sample taken from old seat or measure both the dis-tance between the holes (center to center), as well as, the diameter of the hole.
