5. Health Insurance

5.1 Health insurance for foreign students

Foreign students must be insured for the whole time of their stay at UJEP. Their insurance documents should be submitted to the faculty co-ordinator or the student co-ordinator before matriculation into the STAG system, otherwise they will not be accepted on the courses. The conditions differ for EU and non-EU students. If you come from an EU country, a standard EU insurance card will suffice for these purposes. With this card, you will need to register with the Všeobecná zdravotní pojišťovna ČR insurance company (Bratislavská 8, Ústí nad Labem) immediately after your arrival in the Czech Republic. Unless you do so, you will have to pay for treatment and then ask your insurance company to pay the bill (like students with private insurance). The treatment will be given after the insurance card is shown. If you come from a non-EU country, you will need travel insurance valid for the whole time of your stay. You will be treated following the presentation of your valid insurance documents. If you intend to do any dangerous sports in the Czech Republic (among which skiing is included) you will need special high-risk health insurance.

If you come from a non-EU country you may choose from the following two kinds of health insurance. However, in both cases you will still need to be insured with the Všeobecná zdravotní pojišťovna ČR.

(7)

a) Short-term insurance – covering necessary and urgent treatment

This insurance can be taken out for the period of 1-24 months. The insurance covers diagnosis and examinations essential for determination of medical treatment, hospitalization, essential surgery and urgent dental treatment. This insurance is not limited by age.

b) Long-term – covering overall treatment

This insurance is similar to the general public health insurance. It also covers prescribed medicine and medical procedures, preventative treatment, physiotherapy, inoculations and so on. The insurance is taken out for a period of 6 – 24 months and is available to people at up to 70 years of age. Before its conclusion the applicant must undertake a general health examination by a physician listed by the insurance company. The cost of the insurance depends on the age of the applicant.

Further information will be provided by Všeobecná zdravotní pojišťovna ČR at: www.vzp.cz

6. Financial support for students

UJEP provides these kind of stipends: a) merit scholarship

b) exceptional c) doctoral

d) accommodation (can be also given to foreign students within the Erasmus programme) e) social

f) travel expenses of academic staff within the programmes of European co-operation in the area of university education

These stipends are granted according to the Stipendiary Rules.

Up-to-date information about the social and accommodation stipends can be found at http://platby.ujep.cz

Up-to-date information about other stipendiary options are available on the university web-site. In 2007, for example, there was:

Stipend from the Glaverbel Czech Managing Director for the best diploma or Bachelor‘s dissertation at the University of J. E. Purkyně in Ústí nad Labem in 2007

Stipend for the best UJEP students of 2007

Stipend from the Ústí nad Labem Region(more at http://www.kr-ustecky.cz).

Further information can be found on the university web-site and the web-sites of the individual faculties. The up-to-date version of the Stipendiary Rules is posted at www.ujep.cz in the section „Podle činností → Studium→ Vnitřní předpisy a normy”

Foreign students from developing countries can also apply for stipends; applications should be handed in at the appropriate diplomatic office (usually in the applicant’s country) within the required time. Applicants that are staying in the Czech Republic at the time of application should submit the required documents to the Czech Republic Foreign Office, department of developing co-operation. Foreigners with a permanent stay visa cannot apply for government stipends.

(8)

Another kind of stipend provided by the government of the Czech Republic is based on bilateral international agreements in government and resort categories which have been negotiated with many EU and other European and non-European countries.

Stipends of this kind are intended for students or university graduates and doctorate holders (exceptionally also research and pedagogical university staff) who wish to undertake studies or carry out a research stay at a Czech public university. The length of stay usually ranges from two to ten months depending on the agreement between the Czech government and the government of the country concerned, which also specifies categories of possible recipients of a stipend.

The UJEP UAC activities can be divided into the following categories:

• General study orientation

• Study-related counselling

• Careers advisory 1) General study orientation

Information about study options at individual UJEP faculties and institutes is offered to groups as well as individuals. The University Advice Centre also provides information about the content and goals of university studies, requirements of the entrance process (exams), the content of individual study programmes and the fields of study. It also provides information about education within the framework of the Lifelong Education programme. These services are intended for student applicants, educational advisors of secondary schools and other people interested in information about studying at UJEP

2) Study-related counselling

This advice programme gives UJEP students a better understanding of the operation of our university and its individual parts, and thus helps students, especially new ones, to adapt better. It specializes in solving study-related problems including failure prevention. Furthermore, it helps with orientation in the relevant study-related and legal regulations. It also provides advisory services to foreign students.

3) Careers advisory

Careers advisory concentrates mainly on providing information for students who, in the final year of their studies, are preparing to look for employment. This kind of counselling provides students with information about the labour market, ways to find employment, and also how to prepare CVs appropriately, as well as letters of application and job interviews.

map source: http:// www.czech.cz

Ústí nad Labem is situated 100 km north of Prague, close to the border with Germany and approximately 80 km from Dresden. It is among the ten largest towns in the Czech Republic. The first historical mention of the town dates from the first half of the 11th century. It became a royal town during the reign of Wenceslaw I, circa 1240. It experienced its biggest boom in the second half of the 19th century thanks to the development of transport and industry. At

present, the number of its inhabitants is nearly 100 thousand and it is known mainly as an industrial town (the chemical industry). It is an administrative centre for the Southern Bohemia region.

There are many historical buildings and places of interest in the town, for example Střekov, the ruin of a Gothic castle from the 14th century, which is situated on a rock on the right side of the Labe River. The tourist restaurant Větruše, the Mariánský most (a modern bridge) and Mariánská Rock are other important landmarks of the town and the surroundings. There are several churches in the town centre, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary being the best known. The church’s tower is lopsided, which is the result of bombardment in 1945. There are also St. Adalbert´s Church and the Apostle Paul’s Church (the Red Church). There are mainly modern developments in the town, but also some old villa districts, mainly in Klíše and Střekov.

The city’s cultural facilities comprise the North Bohemian Theatre of Opera and Ballet, the Drama Theatre, the Hraničář Cinema, Pictures at František, the City Museum, and a number of cultural events take place in the House of Culture of Ústí nad Labem.

Ústí nad Labem stages a number of cultural events annually, apart from others the International Dance Festival, Trampská Porta – a national festival of rambling, country, and folk music, the International Festival of Community Singing and the international competition Virtuosi per Musica di Pianoforte.

The city environs boast of numerous places of interests – directly in the city there is Berta´s Valley and the Zoological Garden, the Erbenova Lookout Tower within easy reach, the Vaňov Waterfall, Castle Blansko, the Church of St. Barbara in Dubice, Chateau Velké Březno, Chateau Trmice, the Napoleonic battlefields in Chlumec, Přestanov and Varvažov, the Tisá Sandstone Rocks, the Museum of Folk Architecture in Zubrnice and many others.
