The Year of St. Joseph

With the 150th anniversary of St. Joseph being declared the Patron of the Universal Church, Pope Francis has announced a special year dedicated to St. Joseph starting on December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2021.

Pope Francis has written an Apostolic Letter, Patris Corde (With the Father’s Heart), which recalls St. Joseph’s humble acceptance of God’s will to become the earthly father and protector of Jesus. During this difficult time, which has become our new “normal,” St. Joseph offers all ordinary people an example of hope and patience at whatever life throws at us.

This special year of St. Joseph will offer many opportunities for indulgences. Below are several ways one may attain an indulgence.

Conditions for the plenary indulgence

The plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful under the usual conditions (sacramental Confession, Eucharistic Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions) to Christians who, with a spirit detached from any sin, participate in the Year of St. Joseph on these occasions and manners indicated by the Apostolic Penitentiary:

• The plenary indulgence is granted to those who will meditate for at least 30 minutes on the Lord’s Prayer, or take part in a Spiritual Retreat of at least one day that includes a meditation on St. Joseph. “St. Joseph, an authentic man of faith, invites us,” the decree reads, “to rediscover our filial relationship with the Father, to renew fidelity to prayer, to listen and correspond with profound discernment to God’s will.”

• The indulgence can also be obtained by those who, following St. Joseph’s example, will perform a spiritual or corporal work of mercy. St. Joseph “encourages us to rediscover the value of silence, prudence and loyalty in carrying out our duties,” the decree notes.

• The recitation of the Holy Rosary in families and among engaged couples is another way of obtaining indulgences, in order that “all Christian families may be stimulated to recreate the same atmosphere of intimate communion, love and prayer that was in the Holy Family.”

• Everyone who entrusts their daily activity to the protection of St. Joseph, and every faithful who invokes the intercession of St. Joseph so that those seeking work can find dignifying work, can also obtain the plenary indulgence. On 1 May 1955, Pope Pius XII instituted the feast of St. Joseph “with the intent that the dignity of work be recognized by all, and that it inspires social life and laws, based on the fair distribution of rights and duties.”

• The plenary indulgence is also granted to the faithful who will recite the Litany to St. Joseph (for the Latin tradition), or the Akathistos to St. Joseph (for the Byzantine tradition), or any other prayer to St. Joseph proper to the other liturgical traditions, for the persecuted Church ad intra and ad extra, and for the relief of all Christians suffering all forms of persecution. Because, the decree notes, “the flight of the Holy Family to Egypt shows us that God is there where man is in danger, where man suffers, where he runs away, where he experiences rejection and abandonment.”

In addition to these, the Apostolic Penitentiary grants a plenary indulgence to the faithful who will recite any legitimately approved prayer or act of piety in honor of St. Joseph, for example, “To you, O blessed Joseph” especially on “March 19, on May 1, the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph [the Sunday between Christmas and New Year’s Day], on St. Joseph’s Sunday (according to the Byzantine tradition) on the 19th of each month, and every Wednesday, a day dedicated to the memory of the saint according to the Latin tradition.”

Amid the ongoing Covid-19 health crisis, the gift of the plenary indulgence is also extended to the sick, the elderly, the dying and all those who for legitimate reasons are unable to leave their homes. They, too, can obtain the plenary indulgences if they are detached from any sin and have the intention of fulfilling, as soon as possible, the three usual conditions and recite an act of piety in honor of St. Joseph, offering to God the pains and hardships of their lives.

Prayer to St. Joseph: Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted His only Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man. Blessed Joseph, to us, too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen.

COVID-Safe Christmas Masses

Due to the continued grip of COVID-19 on our state, our diocese requires that

all churches limit the number of faithful at each Mass to maintain proper social

distancing. At St. Christopher, we are limited to 200 attendees at each Mass.

We are unable to take reservations and will follow for all Christmas Masses:

The Grandview Avenue entrances will open 30 minutes before each Mass. Other

entrances will continue to be unavailable.

Please make sure your entire family/group is present when you arrive. Saving seats

for others will not be permitted.

Check in with an usher so he/she can count the number in your party and help you

find an appropriate seat.

Please use the tape guidelines on the pews to make sure social distancing between

pews and within each pew is maintained. (The tape should be at your back.)

Faithful arriving after we reach 200 will be asked to attend a different Mass or stream

the Mass. Please stay tuned for updates on our streaming.

Please continue to use the hand sanitizer at the entrance and wear either a mask—

your own or one of the disposable masks available in the vestibule—throughout

your time in our church.

By following these guidelines, we demonstrate our love for God and our love for our

neighbor.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience during this challenging time.

Fr. Wojciech

Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe is December 12th. Our Lady appeared to Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac in 1531. Our Lady asked Juan Diego to build a shrine to her in that spot. Juan Diego went to Archbishop Juan de Zumárraga, but he did not believe what Juan Diego was saying and asked for a sign. Juan Diego told Our Lady about the disbelief from the Archbishop. She told Juan Diego to climb up the hill and pick some flowers. Juan Diego did as he was told, although it was winter. He carried the flowers in his cloak, known as a tilma. When Juan Diego released the flowers and let them fall from his tilma, the image of Our Lady was imprinted on the tilma. First, the roses released were not found in Mexico and second, the imprint of the Virgin on the tilma has lasted since 1531. Tilma’s normally last 15 to 30 years, but this one has lasted almost 500 years and has survived an acid spill and a bomb explosion. There are many more interesting facts about the miraculous image. For more miraculous info, visit: https:// vivaguadalupe.org/news/ten-amazing-facts.

BISHOP READY HONOR ROLL Congratulations to the following

parishioners who are students at Bishop Ready High School and who have attained Honor Roll Status for the first quarter of the current academic year: senior Mercy Cala-Avila (Second Honors) and sophomore Mirabella DeTillio – (Distinction List).

MAKE A DIFFERENCE

“Every dollar makes a difference in covering our expenses,” says a Trappist abbot. Hundreds of US religious communities struggle to provide for aging members because most senior Catholics sisters, brothers, and religious order priests served for little pay. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps these communities bridge the gap, offering support for medications, nursing care, and other necessities. Please be generous.

Third Sunday of Advent

“Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstance; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for

you” (I Thessalonians 5:16-18)

This scripture reading sums up stewardship. “Rejoice always” means place your trust in God; He will provide all that you need. “Pray constantly” means prayer should be a running conversation with God throughout the whole day, every day. “Give thanks in all circumstances” means even in bad situations, thank God. Suffering a little bit helps build empathy for others in similar situations and shows our dependence on God. Learn how you can be a good steward by supporting your parish and contact The Catholic Foundation. Visit www. catholic-foundation.org/development for more information.

2021 CALENDAR

2021 calendars will be available in the vestibule (back of the church) for pickup. Happy New Year!

Giving Tree

St. Christopher ’s Giving Tree is in the back of the church. We are collecting mittens, gloves, scarves, hats and any other winter item to decorate the tree. We also have tags on the Giving Tree with specific gifts for individuals. Please choose a tag and return the unwrapped gift with the tag to the Church by December 19th. Thank you for the ongoing generosity!

Mass Intentions

St. Christopher has many openings for Mass intentions since we are now offering more Masses. Masses can be said for those who have died as well as those who are living. One can have Masses said for an anniversary, an upcoming surgery, birthday, the wellbeing of a family, etc. Having a Mass said for a loved one, living or deceased, is a special gift and bestows special graces upon that individual or family. If you would like to have a Mass said for someone please call Chloe at 614-754-8888 or email at [email protected]. The Parish asks for a small donation of $10.00 per Mass.
