Wanted Public Health Informatics Specialists

HISP India is a not for profil NGO working in the domain of public health information systems for the last 15 years. The geographical scope of work has included multiple states in India, the national level, and various national

governments like Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indoensia and others. Furthermore, we have successfully worked with various international organizations like WHO, Geneva and Kenya, CHAI foundation, GIZ, Path International, DFID; Options, UK and others on design, development and implementation of public health informatics solutions. Technologically, we work with state of the art open source technologies for public health including DHIS2 (dhis2.org), OpenMRS (openmrs.org), iHRIS for human resources, DHIS2 Mobile for mobile applications, and most importantly

integration across these systems.As the technologies we are working with our scope of work is rapidly increasing, and also the nature of work becoming more complex.

To meet with these increasing demands, we are looking for professionals in the domain of public health informatics. While this may not be a pre-defined field of study, it basically involves professionals with a public health

grounding, with a keen aptitude towards the socio-technical aspects of systems design, development and implementations of IT solutions for public health sector. This will require understanding of how databases and meta data can be appropriately designed, their documentation, and communication and coordination with the technical teams to ensure appropriate solutions are developed. The job does not stop there, these systems have to be taken out to the field and seamlessly integrated with everyday work processes of health workers. A deep understanding of the context of use, empathy in

understanding the needs of the users, designing appropriate capacity building initiatives, and being able to meaningfully hearing the voices of users are important attributes required for the job.

The person we are looking for must be first and foremost interested in making a difference to the development sector, especially public health. He/she must be deeply committed to the ideology of working with open source systems, open standards, and look at development in broader terms beyond monetary gains. The person must be interested in research, and have an inquiring mind to seek the "why" underlying problem situations which he/she will necessarily have to engage with. Strong analytical skills including a feel for asking questions of the data is very important. Ideally, the person should have a masters degree in development studies, public health or medicine, with at least 3 years of experience in the implementation of real projects in the field. We look for a person interested in developing a longer term career in this domain.

HISP India (hispindia.org) is part of a vibrant and thriving global network of like minded people who form loosely the HISP network, currently active in about 50 countries and coordinated by the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo, Norway. For those with interest and aptitude, there could also be the potential of undertaking doctoral and masters degree studies registered at the university of Oslo. We offer competitive salaries with other organizations in the development sector, but we of course do not compete with MNCs and International organizations offerrring Dollar equivalent salaries. The candidate

To meet the increasing demand for its services, HISP India is looking for

professionals in the domain of public health informatics. The key requirements that we feel are necessary are:

 Keen aptitude in the socio-technical aspects design, development and implementation of IT solutions in the public health sector

 Good understanding of the design of databases and meta data  Ability to coordinate with technical teams to ensure that appropriate

solutions are developed

 Implementation of these systems in the field so that they integrate seamlessly with the everyday work processes of health workers  Deep understanding of the context of use and being able to

meaningfully hear the voices of users.

 Ability to design and execute appropriate capacity building initiatives  Strong analytical skills

 Interested in research and have an inquiring mind to seek the “why” of the problem situation

 Expected to be open to travel both within India and abroad

 Ideally, should possess a Masters degree in development studies, public health or medicine with at least 3 years of experience in the

implementation of projects.

 Must be interested in making a difference to the development sector especially public health

 Must be deeply committed to the ideology of working with open source systems and open standards
