LET US CAPTURE

YOUR IMAGINATION

AND YOUR HEART!

IRINA KROHN, MANAGING DIRECTOR

VO LEHTONEN

Dear Friends.

You now have in your hands our newly revamped fi lm catalogue with our latest feature and documentary fi lms. In recent years we have brought you a fatherless reindeer boy as well as the Nazis from the dark side of the moon. We wish to continue bringing excitement your way with our latest offerings which are as vivacious and colorful as the ever-changing seasons of Finnish nature.

Lauri Maijala shows the fans of the Hangover fi lms how it’s really done – the Finnish way - with his Gloriously Wasted. Matti Ijäs makes a fantastic comeback with Things We Do for Love and brings you the wickedly delicious Ansa, who makes men chase her through our impressive Arctic landscapes. Aki Kaurismäki’s muse and Cannes winner Kati Outinen fi ghts for her right to happiness in Cold-War era Europe in Taru Mäkelä’s wonderfully warm August Fools. Actress extraordinaire Leea Klemola convincingly refuses to be a victim in Simo Halinen’s Open Up to Me portraying an ordinary woman who just happened to be a man before, in search of her Mr. Right. Our masterful documentary fi lmmaker Pirjo Honkasalo returns to the fi ction genre with Concrete Night, taking the art fi lm to a whole new level. Documentary, which has long been the fl agship of Finnish cinema, is staying its course as well. Susanna Helke’s American Vagabond shows a harsh reality of gay teenagers in America while Aleksi Salmenperä follows a man in search of his dream along the Alcan Highway. I invite you to explore the rest of this catalogue yourself. Last year the Finnish fi lmmakers broke domestic box offi ce records while making fi lms that changed the way we look at ourselves and one another. Great stories are universal and we hope that you will give ours a chance to capture your imagination and your heart!

The Finnish Film Foundation participates in fi lm markets at the Berlin, Cannes and Toronto Film Festivals together with other Nordic fi lm institutes under the ‘Scandinavian Films’ banner. To promote short and documentary fi lms, The Nordic fi lm institutes and the Finnish Film Foundation cooperate at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in France, International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA) in Amsterdam, and at the Nordisk Panorama event.

“Berries grow faster, animals bow, the sick are healed, the poor get wealthy and women conceive. All dreams come true where Kekkonen treads.” Urho Kaleva Kekkonen, the long-time president of the Republic of Finland, is sched-uled to visit Alli’s Bar on his way to northern Finland. He is blindly worshiped and the nearer the visit draws, the more envy, competition and dirty tricks come to bear in this small town setting. No one is spared the brutality!

Kai Latvalehto has always felt like an outsider. As a child in the 1970’s, his Finnish family lived in Gothenburg, southern Sweden, and he always felt like he was a sec-ond grade citizen; one of those who spoke a weird language too loudly and drank too much alcohol. He was ashamed of being a Finn. In the early 1980’s, Kai’s fa-ther, Tauno, decided it was time they moved back to Finland. Kai felt like he didn’t belong there as well. Now in his forties, after quitting his musical career and hav-ing a child of his own, Kai feels even more out of place. Kai decides to drive with his father from Oulu in Northern Finland all the way down to Gothenburg to revisit the places of his childhood. The journey of a father and son becomes a musical delving into the emotional memory and the history of Finnish immigration in Swe-den, an exploration of shame, guilt, crime, alcoholism, and family secrets.

FS FILM OY INTERNATIONAL SALES: THE YELLOW AFFAIR

This is the story of professional football (soccer) player Jari Litmanen, often referred as the “king” or “artist”. The fi lm is about what it takes to make it in football as well as a personal exploration revealing who Litmanen really is – the family man, the human being. We also delve into the sacrifi ces he’s made in his private life and, naturally, how football has impacted his world. We fol-low the footprints of his past to Lahti, Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Liverpool and meet his former team-mates, coaches and friends. The fi lm also covers the major turning points in his childhood, the highlights of his career, confl icts with coaches and inevitable injuries. We are also left to ponder just when and how Litmanen will fi nally end his long and distinguished career.

When an entire group of Finnish skiers tested positive for doping in the Lahti World Championships of 2001, it revealed the systematic and long-term history of the use of illegal performance-enhancing drugs in the sport. The investigative documentary portrays, through the lens of sport, the way our society creates the foundation for lies and double standards in our attempts to win. It also rais-es the qurais-estion of whether the distortions in sport are a refl ection of the distor-tions in society in general: is society working under the same rules as sport?

Wolfman is a fi lm about Seppo Ronkainen, a man who has taught himself the language and ways of wolves, having faced them in the wilderness and wit-nessing their fates. The fi lm is based on his video diaries collected over the course of 13 years. The unique material tells the intertwining stories of a man, wolves and dogs. It is a portrait of the man and eight individual wolves. But most of all, it is a story about the contradictory relationship between people and an endangered species.
