Mount Kilimanjaro

Machame Route 2015

with A IDS Orphan UK Trust

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest free standing mountain in the world. Rising 5895m from the East African plains, it is capped by Uhuru Peak – meaning “freedom” in Swahili. Standing on this frosty peak puts you on the Roof of Africa– where you can gaze down on the clouds, and up at acres of blue sky.

Known as the Whisky Route, since it offers a more authentic experience than the busier Coca Cola Marangu Route, Machame follows a quieter path to the summit. This 10-day adventure will take you from the bustling town of Moshi, through rainforests, over moorland & alpine desert, to the eternal snow which caps this iconic mountain.

Our programme is designed to give you the best chance of reaching the summit safely– with a carefully selected menu, highly experienced & qualified guides, and an itinerary which follows the principles of “walk high, sleep low” to allow for proper acclimatisation.

Nothing can match the feeling of reaching the summit with your team, and watching the sun rise over the African plains. This trip truly is a must for anyone with a sense of adventure!

Ian Govendir

CEO of AIDS Orphan

A message from our CEO – Ian Govendir

Congratulations! You’re thinking about taking on an absolutely amazing challenge. Our hope is that you will choose to do it in aid of an amazing cause – ours! AIDS Orphan is a small charity with a global ambition. We’re registered in the UK and we fund projects in Ken-ya and in India and we hope to soon extend our services into Uganda and MKen-yanmar (formerly Burma) and beyond. What we do is help to give children orphaned by AIDS a safe place to live, a decent education and the psychological support they need to come to terms with their own HIV diagnosis.

Every 15 seconds an African child loses a parent to AIDS. By 2015, 25 million children will have lost one or both parents to the virus. It’s the world’s greatest ongoing human tragedy, but by taking part in a challenge like this and raising money for us, you can help children orphaned by AIDS to live happy, fulfilling lives.

Every step you take on your challenge to climb Mount Kilimanjaro will help children orphaned by AIDS to take the next step in their lives too. AIDS not only deprives millions of the poorest children of the love and protection of their parents, the vast majority are left to struggle alone, many with younger siblings to care for, in desperate poverty and with the discrimination and stigma that an HIV status brings. Many children are abandoned and often extended family cannot or will not look after them. These children live on the very margins of society and our aim is to support them both practically and emotionally.

In Kenya, AIDS Orphan is working in partnership with a local organisation to provide specialist counselling to children who are having to come to terms with losing their parents to AIDS. Many of these children also have to cope with the fact that they too have the HIV virus and will have to take medication for the rest of their lives. First and foremost, we offer these vulnerable and often very frightened children somewhere safe to live, good food to eat and warm clothes to wear. We also plan for these children’s futures too. This year, for example, we aim to get 500 AIDS-orphaned children into school to prepare them to become adults who will be able to fend for themselves.

The money you raise will help to feed, clothe and house the children in our care. It will also help to send them to school each day where they can learn the academic and vocational skills they need to lead fulfilling lives. Every £1 you raise will make a vital difference to children like Pius and Mark. Pius (8) and Mark (6) are brothers. Their mother died of AIDS and their father is in prison. They were left with their grandfather who is very old and sick and unable to look after them. Just £9 would buy both boys some toys so they can learn to play and have fun again. £12 would provide Mark with meals every day for a month. £23 is enough to buy Pius a school uniform.

We believe every child orphaned by AIDS deserves our love and protection as well as a decent chance in life. If you believe that too, then please take on this challenge for us. We’d love to have your support and we’ll be with you every step of the way.

What do we do?

AIDS Orphan UK Trust is an international development charity that provides practical and emotional support to children orphaned by AIDS, many of whom are also living with the HIV virus themselves.

AIDS Orphan provides children with access to education, regular meals and practical help in taking medication. Most importantly we organise psychological training and counselling to help orphaned children cope with their HIV status. AIDS Orphan currently works with four projects in Kenya and one in India and is investigating a new project in Myanmar (formerly Burma) and Uganda.

Our work in Kenya has four components: rescue, outreach, education and peer education for young mothers around mother to child transmission.

 Neema Rescue Centre provides food, education, clothing and a safe place to stay. It also offers psychological and emotional support for children orphaned by AIDS.

 Neema Outreach aims to provide 500 HIV/AIDS orphaned children in Kibera, Kenya’s largest slum, with proper care, treatment and nutritional health education.

 Neema Education supports Little Rock, a school in Nairobi with a simple goal: to ensure that all 450 children in its care receive a rounded education.

 Neema Peer education focuses on educating young mothers around the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (known as PMTCT) and providing other HIV educational services in the local community.

In India, we support the Ankur project, which provides paediatric HIV counselling and support around the many issues connected with disclosure.

What makes us different?

We’re different because we put a special focus on counselling and disclosure support for children orphaned by AIDS and diagnosed as HIV+. We offer a service no-one else is in the regions where we work.

According to AIDS Orphan CEO, Ian Govendir, “There are lots of other agencies who work with HIV and children and they do amazing work. But the crucial area of psychological support is misunderstood and there are not enough resources. It seemed to me that, with improved and more widespread medication and people living longer, AIDS had dropped off the radar. Yet another African child is still losing a parent to AIDS every 15 seconds of every day.”

Our work is only possible with the help of amazing people like you. By taking on this challenge and raising funds for us, you will be helping to make a lasting and direct difference to the lives of hundreds of children orphaned by AIDS.

We are a small charity with a global ambition. Already, we are helping more than 500 AIDS-orphaned children to have a better life. With your help, we can reach out to even more children and show them that we care and that we are there to ensure they never have to walk alone.

Lulu’s Story

Lulu was one of the very first children to be treated by our project partner in Kenya, Little Rock. Born in a slum and orphaned at just 10 years old, Lulu didn’t have the best start in life. When she was very young she contracted meningitis, which left her profoundly deaf. She has also been successfully treated for TB, which still requires monitoring on a weekly basis. Having TB means that Lulu can’t go to the only school for deaf children, which is miles from where she lives. So Lulu’s education is being conducted through Little Rock, which is an early childhood development centre. For her age this is challenging, as she is ready to continue her education.

As soon as she has the ‘all clear’, AIDS Orphan will pay for Lulu to board at the school that specialises in working with deaf children. In the meantime, we’re funding Lulu’s schooling through the Neema Outreach project. We help with her school fees, food and clothing. Lulu is currently staying at the Neema Rescue house with her older sister.

Despite everything she has been through, Lulu is now a very happy child. Her TB and HIV are under control and she is able to live the life of a normal 14-year-old. She is a big part of the Little Rock community and always has a big smile for everyone she meets.

Fundraising

Our aim is for as much of your money as possible to go directly to AIDS Orphan UK Trust. We are very proud of the fact that at least 55% of your fundraising effort is spent on charitable activities.

Throughout the year leading up to your departure, you will receive regular correspondence from our dedicated team of Fundraising Managers who are fully equipped to help you meet your fundraising target and embark on the trip of a lifetime. You will also have a Team Leader who will be available on a day-to-day basis to offer advice, conduct meetings and offer pastoral care. Our team will also give you lots of great fundraising ideas.

We know that fundraising can seem challenging and daunting at first, but with an award-winning team behind you, you’ll find the process simple and easy. Rare Adventures has supported over 6,000 individuals with their fundraising and have eight years’ worth of challenge event fundraising experience, putting you in very safe hands.

8: ITINERARY

30th August

After an early breakfast, we will transfer by bus to the Machame Gate. Here we will sign in to the national park, and meet our expert team of guides and porters. It all starts here.

We will begin a steady trek through a humid rainforest, teeming with wildlife, before reaching Machame Hut campsite at 2980m. If the skies are clear, we will have our first view of the peak! We will have a delicious 3-course dinner before heading to our tents.

29th August

Today is a free day in Moshi. You can browse the markets, or simply drink the views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s snowy peak.

After an early dinner, it will be time to get some rest ahead of tomorrow’s early start!

28th August

An early start today, as we visit an AIDS Orphan project in Nairobi. For many, this is the highlight of the trip. It will be an emotional and rewarding experience. At the school you can meet the teachers and pupils working with AIDS Orphan. Afterwards we transfer to Moshi. This sleepy town on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro is Tanzania’s coffee capital, and has a unique faded charm. In the evening there will be a Kilimanjaro briefing and equipment check before dinner.

2nd September

After breakfast, we will scale the Barranco Wall - an imposing rock formation. From the top of the wall, we will cross the Karanga Valley. At these altitudes there is very little vegetation or animal life, save for the occasional crow. We will reach Barafu campsite (4673m) in the late after-noon - our last stop before the summit. We will camp on a stony ridge, with views dominated by the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro and the spectacular open vista of the vast plains below. We will get some rest in the early evening.

1st September

Today is an acclimatisation day. We will trek up to Lava tower, before descending to Barranco Hut campsite. Trekking high & sleeping low aids acclimatisation. After stopping for lunch at the ancient volcanic plug of Lava Tower, we will descend, enjoying stunning views of the Western Breach on the way down. Barranco Camp has some stunning views of the peak high above and Moshi town far below. Since there is no light pollution at this altitude, the night sky is an unforgettable blanket of a million bright stars.

31st August

We will start with an early breakfast, before continuing our ascent to Shira Hut at 3850m. Lunch will be provided en route. Throughout today we will catch tantalising glimpses of Kilimanjaro’s peak through the trees, as we climb wide ridges and mountain pathways.

We will arrive at Shira Hut campsite in the late afternoon. For the first time we will look down on clouds below us, while watching the sun set over distant Mount Meru. We’ll end the day with a 3-course hot dinner.

If you have booked on the flights inclusive option, today you will start your independent travel time in Tanzania. It’s up to you what you chose to do with your free time. Rare Adventures are pleased to offer some great value trip extensions in Tanzania & Zanzibar. Each of these trips has been fully risk assessed and quality tested, to make sure you and your team get value for money and can book in confidence. Please see the Extensions page for more information.

4th September

We will have a relaxed start to the day, with time to share songs & dancing with our guides and porters in the shad-ow of Uhuru Peak. The final day of walking is easy-going, t h r o u g h s c e n i c f o r e s t o n e s t a b l i s h e d pathways. The sound of chattering monkeys and birds will accompany you on the walk down to Mweka Gate. Here you will sign your name in the register, to be used for your summit certificate. After transferring by bus to the hotel for showers, we will toast our success at a celebratory dinner!

3rd September

This is it! We will leave camp at around midnight and start our summit bid. We will take things slowly, as the route is steep. The reward for all this effort? At Stella Point you will witness the most spectacular sunrise - as the glowing sun illuminates the southern slopes and plains far beyond. After a final push, we will then reach the roof of Africa – the 5895m Uhuru Peak. After savouring the moment, we will descend to Bafaru Camp to grab a few hours rest, before descending to Mweka Hut campsite. Moving from the frosty summit to the lush rainforests in a few hours.

VACCINATIONS

Please consult with your doctor or travel nurse about what vaccinations you will need for travel to Tanzania. Everyone’s needs are different, and your own medical circumstances will affect which vaccinations and medications you are able to take. Please be aware that travel clinics may charge a premium for vaccinations and medications, so always speak with your GP first

YELLOW FEVER

All travellers coming from areas with risk of yellow fever transmission, or those who spend more than 12 hours in transit in an at-risk area, must carry a Yellow Fever

Vaccination Certificate when entering Tanzania. Those without a Yellow Fever Certificate must carry a valid letter of exemption, signed by their doctor.

A Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate or a valid letter of exemption must also be presented when entering the Sultanate of Zanzibar.

DRINKING WATER

Safe, drinking water is provided throughout your time on the mountain. This water is collected from the mountain streams, then boiled and filtered. You may notice that at times the water retains as slight colouration, however it is perfectly safe to drink.

Water purification tablets are essential for anyone trekking on Kilimanjaro, to ensure that water stored in your bottle or water bag is kept clean. You may wish to bring some neutralising tablets to take away the taste of the purification tablets, or use flavoured tablets.

You can find more information on which vaccines are recommended for travel to Tanzania on the NHS Fit for Travel website:

Our menu, acclimatisation schedule and guides will give you a great chance of reaching the top, however you can do a lot to improve your chances by training in advance. Everyone who takes part in the Mount Kilimanjaro adventure should be comfortable walking for long periods. Preferably, you should also be comfortable walking 6km at a moderate pace while carrying a 5 - 10 kg pack.

RESISTANCE TRAINING

While cardio training and preparing your body for the rigours of prolonged periods of trekking are essential, some resistance training will also prove very helpful.

Hiking will place strain on your knees and back so it is a good idea to focus on these areas. When training, it’s not about lifting the heaviest weight you can. Do exercises in sets, starting with lighter weights as this will build up endurance rather than bulk.

ELEVATION CHART

The chart below shows the daily elevation for each camp and acclimatization hike. By gradually progressing to each camp and taking our time, your body will have the best chance of adjusting to the increased altitude.

Please note: the chart is not a profile of the mountain!

This climb is about endurance, and you must be comfortable walking 6km at a moderate pace while carrying a 5 - 10 kg pack. By preparing the muscles used for trekking, you will recover quicker at the end of each day, and wake up with less aches & pains.

If you choose to book your own flights and meet our team in Tanzania, there are different options when it comes to choosing which airport to fly into. Please see below for some more information of these options. Regardless of which option you chose, we recommend you book your flights no later than 3 months before the start of your climb. Some routes can sell out quickly, meaning prices increase sharply - especially during peak trekking season.

If you are booking your own flights, your services with Rare Adventures will start when you arrive at the team hotel on day 2, and end on day 10 of the itinerary. You are responsible for making your own way to the hotel, and to the airport to catch your flight home.

Rare Adventures will not be able to offer support outside of period of service, and it is your responsibility to ensure you have correctly booked flights and transfers.

CHANGES TO YOUR FLIGHT OPTION

When signing up, you can chose our flights-inclusive package, or you can chose to book your own flights. You can change this option within 7 days of registration, free of charge.

For changes requested after 7 days, the fees below will apply:

CHANGING FLIGHT DATES

For all of our charity challenge events, we book flights under a group ticket. This helps to minimize costs to the charity, and ensure the maximum amount of fundraising goes to the cause you want to support.

Passengers travelling on a group ticket must all depart and return on the same date. If you wish to stay in coun-try for longer, return early, or arrive early, then you should opt to book your own flights.

Also, please note that if you switch groups your original flight preference will be carried over unless you request to change this option.

WHAT LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE DO I NEED?

Kilimanjaro is a trekking peak, which means you will not need any technical climbing skills or training to reach the summit. Our team will follow an established trekking route, and our guides will take the lead. We advise that all clients have experience of hill walking in the UK, and are comfortable hiking for up to 6 hours per day with a 5-10kg pack.

HOW FIT DO I NEED TO BE?

All participants should be in very good physical condition, preferably able to trek for 6 hours per day with a 5 - 10 kg pack. You will spend prolonged periods at altitude during the climb, and the effects of this are not be underestimated. We allow for plenty of time to acclimatize, however we do recommend you consult with your GP if you are unsure.

All participants with pre-existing medical conditions will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire with their GP.

DO I NEED ANY SPECIALIST KIT?

The right kit can be the difference between a successful climb and one that ends early. Take a look at the kit list in this brochure for more details on the gear we recommend. Selected items are available for hire.

WILL I NEED ANY VACCINES?

The NHS recommends a course of anti-malarial medication, along with primary cours-es & boosters. Vaccinations against cholera, hepatitis B, rabicours-es & Yellow Fever are also recommended for consideration. Please refer to NHS Fit for Travel for more infor-mation: http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk

HOW MUCH SHOULD I BUDGET FOR THIS ADVENTURE?

Will need to cover the cost of your visa (£40), vaccinations (est. £100 - £300) and insurance (Rare Care policy £94, other policies are available). You will also need to purchase kit and accessories (cost varies depending on personal preference). All transfers and accommodation in the itinerary are included, along with all meals in Moshi and on the mountain. You will need personal spending money for souvenirs & alcoholic drinks, plus your tips for the crew, extra snacks, and any additional travel you take part in. We recommend somewhere between $400 - $800.

CAN I BOOK MY OWN FLIGHTS?

You are able to book a land-only adventure through Rare Adventures, and meet our team in Moshi before the climb. You can fly to directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), or fly to either Nairobi (NBO) or Dar es Salaam (DAR) and transfer to Moshi.

Please see the BOOKING YOUR OWN FLIGHTS section for more information.

WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE?

At altitude, your body burns far more calories than at sea level. During the climb, we will have a dedicated cook with the team , who will prepare fresh meals 3 times a day. Your meals will be high in carbs and calories, consisting mostly of pasta, soups, stews and fruit. During the climb, you will become used to the guides and crew encouraging you to eat as much as you can – even if you’re not hungry. This helps counter the effects of altitude and increases your chances of success on summit night. It’s not unusual for some of our clients to return from a climb saying they’ve put on weight rather than lost it! If you have any specific dietary requirements, our team can cater for this. When signing up, you can specify your individual needs.

After the climb, we will be treated to a celebratory meal back at the hotel, where you can toast your success with your team-mates and friends.

HOW MANY GUIDES AND CREW WILL THERE BE?

The group will be accompanied at all times by our head guide, who will have overall command of the climb. There will also be a team of assistant guides, porters and the team cook.

During the summit attempt, we ensure a minimum ratio of 1 guide to every 3 clients. This ensures that should anyone decide to turn back, there will be someone available to escort them back to Barafu Camp.

WHAT WEATHER SHOULD I EXPECT?

Mountain weather can be a law unto itself, and Kilimanjaro is no different. At lower elevations, it will be warm enough to hike in a light shirt, while Barranco Camp and above could see temperatures drop below freezing. During our summit attempt temperatures will be at their lowest– potentially -20°C Please review the kit list in this brochure for a guide on what to pack.

WHAT PAPERWORK DO I NEED?

You will need to obtain the following documents in order to travel to take part in the Kilimanjaro climb:

A Tanzanian Visa

A Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate (if spending more than 12 hours in Kenya)

A valid travel insurance certificate

A completed medical form (if you have declared any medical conditions)

We can provide you with the required documentation for your Visa application, and will provide a medical form after you register for the trip (where required).

CAN I RECHARGE MY PHONE / MP3 PLAYER DURING THE CLIMB?

Mount Kilimanjaro is a national park, and has very basic infrastructure. You will be camping each night on the mountain, with no access to mains power. We recommend trying to conserve camera battery, and saving that last bit of juice in your MP3 player for summit night. You can also buy a solar charger, which may provide some extra power. Bear in mind that the cold temperatures at higher altitudes will drain your batteries much faster than at sea level, so try to carry your personal electronic in an inside pocket to keep them warm.

WHERE CAN I GET CASH OR CHANGE MONEY?

You can withdraw cash from one of the many ATMs in Moshi town. Please remember that your bank may charge a transaction fee on this, sometimes as much as 5%. If you bring Sterling or Dollars, these can be changed into Tanzanian Shillings at an exchange in Moshi, or at the hotel. Remember to tell your bank you will be travelling.

CAN I SHOWER OR WASH CLOTHES DURING THE CLIMB?

Each morning our team of porters will bring some tea or coffee to your tent, along with a bowl of warm water so you can have a wash. Facilities will be basic during the climb, so we recommend packing some baby wipes to freshen up along the way. Dirty clothes can be washed back at the hotel in Moshi.

CAN I LEAVE SOME LUGGAGE IN MOSHI?

If you are planning on travelling after the climb, and don’t want to take your clothes for this with you, there are left-luggage facilities available at the team hotel in Moshi.

HOW MUCH BAGGAGE CAN I TAKE ON THE CLIMB?

During the climb, a porter will carry your main bag, while you will carry your day pack with your water, snacks, camera and other personal items. Your main bag should weigh no more than 10kg, while we don’t recommend carrying a day bag of more than 5kg. Please see our kit list for more information on what to take.

IS TANZANIA SAFE?

Tanzania is one of the most welcoming countries in East Africa, and our itinerary is fully risk assessed and regularly monitored. We always follow the advice of the British For-eign & Commonwelath Office (FCO) and other sources. For more information, see https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/tanzania

Avoid travelling on your own, or at night in larger cities. Petty crime can occur much like anywhere in the world – so avoid flaunting expensive items such as cameras, jewellery or mobile phones.

INDEPENDENT TRAVEL CHECKLIST

25: DOING IT YOURSELF

As the departure date for your trip draws nearer, we know that your team may be looking to you for advice on many things, among them independent travel and where to go. With so many options out there, it can be difficult to know where to get the best deal and which is the best option.

If you have decided to book your own independent travel, we’re not trying to change your mind. However, since the safety and wellbeing of you and your team are our number one priority, we do want to share some best practice guidance with you.

We want you and your team have a hassle-free and enjoyable experience in Tanzania. Standards vary hugely, and each year we hear horror stories of trips gone badly wrong. Don’t be afraid to ask questions of tour operators - if you are arranging travel for the group yourself, you will take on liability for their wellbeing and enjoyment. It pays to do your due diligence and check up on who you are handing over your money to!

Whether you chose to book with Rare Adventures or not, we want to make sure that every single person who travels to Kilimanjaro on one of our trips has a positive experience out in Tanzania. We recommend that everyone booking independent travel does so with a UK registered tour operator. This protects your booking. If you do want to talk further about choosing a reliable operator and booking your independent travel, whether you are booking with us or not, our team are only too happy to help.

PACKAGE 1

This package takes in the crown jewels of Tanzania– two of the finest wildlife reserves in the world, combined with the legendary golden sands of Tanzania’s Spice Island– Zanzibar. You will first visit Lake Manyara, on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, before continuing to the epic Ngorongoro Crater. These parks are home to a vast amount of wildlife, and offer a great chance of spotting the Big Five.

You will then leave your safari vehicle behind, and transfer to Zanzibar. The home of East African romance and mystery, the Spice Island has attracted seafarers, explorers and adventurers for centuries. Here you can soak up the sun on endless stretches of golden sand, swim in the azure blue waters of the Indian Ocean, or party ‘til sun-rise at one of the frequent Full Moon Parties.

DAY 1

We will be collected early morning from the hotel by our specially adapted 4x4 Land Cruisers, each with a fridge, charging points and a “pop-top” for game viewing. After a morning drive to the Great Rift Valley, we’ll arrive at Lake Manyara. Here we will explore the lake’s shores and dense jungle, seeking out tree climbing lions, vast herds of elephants and giraffes. In the evening we transfer to our luxury campsite for dinner around the campfire.

DAY 2

In the morning we will drive to the Ngorongoro Highlands, where we sign in at the national park gate and ascend to the crater rim. From the rim we will catch our first glimpses of the sweeping plains inside this ancient volcanic caldera. After descending to the crater floor, we begin exploring in search of rhinos, lions and leopards (to name a few). We will stop for lunch by the hippo pool, then begin our climb out of the crater. There will be the option to visit a Masaii village, before transfering back to Moshi for the evening.

DAY 4 + 5

These days are yours to spend as you wish. There are many optional activities our team in Zanzibar can help you arrange– from historical tours of Stone Town; Dolphin tours at Kizimkazi; to diving and snorkelling trips at the many smaller islands.

In the evenings you can bask in the warm glow of sunset, or join the night owls at one the island’s full moon parties.

DAY 6

Today we bid farewell to the Spice Island, and transfer back to Moshi by ferry & bus.

Here we will overnight in a hotel, before transferring to the airport for our flights home the following day.

DAY 3

After a very early morning start, we transfer to Zanzibar, via Dar es Salaam. While the drive to the ferry port is long, from the window of our private bus you will catch glimpses of daily life in Tanzania, stunning scenery and perhaps some wildlife. After catching a ferry, we will arrive on the island of Zanzibar and transfer to our beach resort for the evening. Here you can walk on palm-fringed beaches, breathe in the fragrant scent of cloves and swim in the waters of the Indian Ocean.
