Accelerated Reader
Student home access instructionsAccelerated reader sponsored by Renaissance Place and the San Marcos Unified School District is a great way to increase interest and excitement in reading for your child. Participation is voluntary but allows a child to earn points toward prizes at school.
Follow this guide to log in and help your child get started. The first section is an abbreviated guide but if you’d like more detailed instructions please skip to page 2. Keep this near your PC for quick reference. Page 6 contains troubleshooting tips if you are having difficulties.
How do I take an AR Test?
1. Log onto the San Elijo School Website.
2. Scroll down on the left and click Accelerated Reader 3. Login in as Student.
a. Your Username is your first and the first three letters of your last name separated by a period. (Jonathon.liv)
b. Password is your student ID number.
4. Under the “Accelerated Reader” section click Take a Quiz 5. Click Take a Reading Practice Quiz (which is the orange pencil)
6. Type in either the Title, Author, or the Quiz Number of the book and click Search
7. If there is a quiz for that particular book it will show up in blue on the bottom. 8. Click the blue title
9. Choose whether the book was Read to you, Read with someone, or Read Independently.
10.It will ask you “Are you sure you want to take this quiz?” Click Yes 11. It will then ask if you want to “start quiz?” Click Yes
12.You will then take the quiz
13.The number correct will show up at the end, along with how many points you received.
Troubleshooting
Q. I can’t get to the Renaissance Place web site. I keep getting bounced back to the San Elijo Elementary web site.
A. This has been a common problem particularly with certain versions of Windows Explorer. If you cannot reach the Renaissance Learning web site use the following link. Either click on this link or copy it into your browser. Once you have accessed the Renaissance Place web site bookmark it for next time.

Q. I can reach the web site but the quizzes don’t open.
A. Make sure that you have compatible versions of Windows Explorer and Adobe Acrobat Reader installed. A quick way to check is click the link CHECK SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS at
the bottom of the Renaissance Place welcome page.
Q. I tried to enter the user name and password but it doesn’t work.
A. Use the lookup feature to lookup the child’s name. Click Find User Name on the logon page to search by name. Make sure you are entering the student’s ID number for the password. The old password “eagles” no longer works.
Detailed logon guide for Accelerated Reader
1. Open your internet web browser and enter
http://www.sanelijoelementary.org in the address bar.
2. Click the link for Accelerated Reader in the left pane.
3. You will be redirected to the Renaissance Place web site. You may bookmark this for future access if you like.
4. Select Log in as: click on Student.
5. Enter the User name and password as follows: User name: firstname.last
Password: Student ID number
(full first name – dot – first three letters of the last name. Example: Jonathan Livingston would log in as
“jonathan.liv”)
6. Under the Accelerated Reader tab select: Take a Quiz.
Under View quizzes taken or View Goals and Points you can keep track of your total points and the books you’ve completed.
7. From the Select a Quiz Type menu choose:
RP: Take a Reading Practice Quiz.
8. Search for a reading practice quiz. Enter the title or author in the search form then click Search.
You do not need to enter both. In most cases only a part of the title or author’s name is necessary but occasionally you will have to enter the full title.
Occasionally you will have to get creative to find the correct book. Keep trying

9. Find the book in the search results and click on the title.
Make sure the title and author match as many books have similar titles.
10. Select how the book was read. Read to
Read with or
Read independently.
11. Confirm reading practice quiz.
Make sure the correct title and author appear in the form and select Yes.
12. When the child is ready to begin click Start Quiz.
13. Select the best answer and press Enter or click on Next ► The questions will appear one at a time on the screen. The child may select an answer by clicking on the letter with the mouse or selecting the letter on the keyboard.
If you want to change your answer you may select a different answer before selecting next.
14. When the quiz is finished a summary will display.
You may review any wrong answers Yes. Otherwise select No or Done.
15. A completion report will display that you can print if you like.
Select Continue at the top of the page you will be asked if you’d like to take a Vocabulary Practice Quiz.
16. Vocabulary Practice Quiz. If you’d like to take the vocabulary practice quiz select Yes.
If you select No you can return back later and take the vocabulary quiz.
17. Select Logout if you are done or Return to Home if you’d like to take another quiz.
