EPFL at a glance:

The Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL ) is an engineering center of excellence in Switzerland. Ranked sec-ond in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (AWRU) for European techni-cal universities, it is in constant growth and outreach in the world of engineering. The rapidly expanding campus now includes the Rolex Learning Center and, in 2013, the Swisstech Convention Center. EPFL also benefits from the cultural wealth of its

stu-dent body, representing more than 120 countries.2013.

Mechanical Engineering at EPFL:

The Mechanical Engineering department belongs to the Engineering School and has been involved in many innovative technical projects with companies such as Alinghi, Solar Impulse, and L’Hydroptère. EPFL proudly counts among its academic staff world famous research Professors Daniel Favrat, Thomas Gmür, Jacques Giovanola, and John Botsis, to name just a few. The consequence of this innovation and engagement with the field of mechanical engineer-ing inside and outside of Switzerland combined with such renowned staff has resulted in a 40% increase in enrolment in the last four years.

Testimony:

Valentin Scire, Master Delegate and former organizer of the 2011 Study Trip

“The study trip was an occasion to see on-site application of theoretical notions gained during our three years long Bachelor studies. It allowed us to discover field and practical realities, which encouraged most of us to consider an industrial career instead of an academic one. Most importantly, it gave us great motivation to complete our master degree and helped us identify and choose our specializations.”

EPFL is backing us:

Daniel Chuard, Education Delegate, EPFL

“Within the organization of their study trip, our third year students in mechanical engineering asked me to support their fundraising.

I am glad to help them as our school promotes educational trips because it is an occasion for the participants to broaden their minds as well as giving them original perspectives. It allows them not only to know a different industrial culture, but also to discover other university standards and create new bonds.

Although students already benefit from internal funding, the realization of their objectives requires more important financial resources than those they have at our dis-position. That is why our students call upon your generosity.

In the hope that you may answer favorably to their request and with my best re-gards.”

Brazil

The Brazilian study trip is scheduled from August 27th to September 7th 2012. It will be orientated towards transport and energy issues and indus-tries. For this reason, the region of São-Paulo, Brazil, appeared to be the most appropriate.

Brazil has distinguished itself in many areas such as

pri-mary source extraction and mining of hydrocarbons, as well as having cutting edge technologies in medicine and aeronautics. Brazil’s industrial future is in a state of rapid growth and will play a critical role in the bright economic future of the country.

More than a trip

Each year the study trip is organized in a country known for its innovative and challenging mechani-cal engineering industries. Previous excursions vis-ited the Unvis-ited States and the Unvis-ited Kingdom. Students are dedicated to the success of this study experience as an important part of their training as a future EPFL mechanical engineer graduate. Indeed, cultural knowledge as well as the technical and prac-tical knowledge students will gain, are both funda-mental to a successful contribution to mechanical engineering in our globalized world.

The Global Meca Travel organizing committee and the students are highly motivated to create new

cultural, professional and academic links with colleagues around the world. Students are also fully aware that professional and ethical behavior is essential to the success of the study experience. It is further understood that students will be held responsible for upholding the good reputation of both Switzerland and EPFL.

Program

We have two key aims for this study trip. Firstly we aim to visit select educational institutions, Brazilian companies, as well as laboratories and research centers engaged in mechanical engineering. We hope to gain practical insights in the application of cut-ting edge mechanical engineering applied in industry.

Secondly, there is an important cultural aim. Students plan to meet both Brazilian students and professors in order to create mutually beneficial professional exchanges between our countries. During their stay EPFL students intend to present the work of EPFL and offer some Swiss culture to their hosts. In order to discover Brazilian culture in a more personal way, students have allocated free hours for self-exploration of the history, art, architecture and people of this fascinating country.

Finally, after returning to Switzerland, the study trip participants will prepare a re-port and organise a conference to present the experience to EPFL students and staff.

What we guarantee

This trip forms part of the Bachelor’s degree matriculation and is thereby subject to very strict EPFL rules. These rules will be applied to the study trip activities. Students are continually advised by their Department Director as well as a study counselor. The trip committee has amongst its members a Swiss army officer and an ex-Vice President of the students’ general association of EPFL. At least one EPFL Professor will take part in the trip.

We think ourselves serious, committed and able to undertake this important and interesting educational experience
