Welcome to the School of Graduate Studies (SGS). The Essential Grad Guide is designed to provide you with an overview of the services that are available at SGS and the University of Toronto as a whole. At SGS, we strive to provide expert information and help regarding registration, fee payment, course enrolment, important deadlines, graduate awards and financial assistance, and resources for academic success. If you ever have questions, Student Services, located at 63 St. George Street, is a good place to start. I also encourage you to visit our website, where you will find lots of useful resources to help you be successful in your academic life, including the SGS Calendar, information about awards and funding, academic integrity, policies and guidelines for graduate students, and how you can get involved. You will receive a monthly newsletter from SGS called ‘Gradschool e-News’ which contains important information about awards, events, activities, and other updates.

I also invite you to visit the Grad Room at 66 Harbord Street (at Spadina) – a comfortable space exclusively for U of T graduate students. It’s a great place to interact socially and to study. At Grad Room you have access to a multi-purpose space for graduate student programming. You can also learn more about the Graduate Professional Skills (GPS) Program, which provides graduate students a range of opportunities for skills development.

Please accept my best wishes for a successful and enjoyable academic year.

As you begin this new phase of your academic life, you’ll soon discover that U of T offers a world of opportunity and a chance for you to pursue many diverse interests.

You are part of an academic community in which you will deepen your learning and be able to conduct research with internationally distinguished faculty. You are also part of a larger community that is deeply embedded in the culture of the Greater Toronto Area.

You and your colleagues will find that U of T is a place where you can follow your passions both within and beyond your classes and research, whether they are cultural pursuits, sports, international opportunities or community service.

Look through this book to discover the many services or programs that can help you make your time at U of T fulfilling, academically, professionally and personally. The staff at SGS and in Student Life are here to provide opportunities and support you throughout your academic career.

enrol and register

What is the difference between enrolment and registration? To enrol, you add yourself to courses. To register, you pay your tuition and incidental fees, or register without payment (defer fees).

enrolment

Enrolment occurs when you add yourself to courses. Most graduate units allow students to enrol in courses through the Student Web Service (www.rosi.utoronto.ca); however, some graduate units require students to fill out a form. Consult your home graduate unit for detailed instructions and the SGS Sessional Dates for course enrolment deadlines:

uoft.me/CourseEnrolment

registration

To register on time, pay your tuition and incidental fees or register without payment (defer your fees) by September 12 (if you are starting in September) or January 9 (if you are starting in January). Instructions on how to pay tuition fees (including a fee payment from outside of Canada) are found at

www.fees.utoronto.ca. To find out how much you owe, check your invoice at www.rosi.utoronto.ca. You may request to register without payment (i.e. fee deferral) through the Student Web Service (www.rosi.utoronto.ca) as long as:

you have no outstanding fees from a previous session you are the recipient of one of the following which exceeds the Minimum Payment to Register amount on your invoice:

OSAP loan

other provincial government loan; US government loan

University funding package (major award, research stipend or teaching stipend). If you are registering late, come to the SGS Student Services office to register without payment in person (late registration fees will be assessed).

late registration

If you have not registered by the deadline, your enrolment in courses will be cancelled and further enrolment through the Student Web Service (ROSI) will be blocked. After September 12 (fall/winter sessions) or January 9 (winter session) you must provide proof of payment and register at the SGS Student Services office. A late registration fee of $44, plus $5 per additional day to a maximum of $94, will be charged.

the graduate awards office

The Graduate Awards Office (GAO) at SGS provides administrative support for a wide range of scholarship and financial aid programs. Whether you are applying for a scholarship or you are seeking financial support to attend a conference, the GAO can provide advice and assistance.

Financial counselling is also available through the GAO to assist you with managing educational expenses, budgeting and planning. Our financial counsellor can provide information and direction on various financial aid programs such as student loans, University of Toronto grants, and other opportunities. Counselling may be provided in person, via email, or by telephone.

funding & awards

U of T is committed to the financial support of graduate students in doctoral stream programs. Although financial support cannot be guaranteed for all graduate students, we encourage you to inquire about financial assistance at your graduate unit.

If you are a research master’s or PhD student, the amount of your funding package, the number of years you will receive it, and the composition of the funding will depend on your specific program. Minimum funding packages include academic tuition fees plus a stipend of $15,000. Your funding package may be made up of U of T fellowships, scholarships or awards, and teaching and research assistantships. Each faculty has its own funding arrangements, administered by its graduate units. Most graduate units will send you a detailed breakdown of your funding package at the beginning of each academic year. Check with your graduate unit for full details.

Students in professional master’s and doctoral programs typically self-fund their educational expenses through a variety of programs including student loans, student line of credit, and employment income. They may also be eligible for a limited number of graduate awards available through their graduate units and various external agencies.

family resources

Many grad students juggle family responsibilities, such as childcare or eldercare. There are extensive resources to help including workshops and discussion groups for student parents.

U of T has several licensed childcare centres on its campuses – there’s a waitlist for space, so apply early.

I’ve found Hart House to be a wonderful

place for balancing work with fun activities.

Grad Escapes is another great way to get

out and see Toronto and meet fellow

grad students.”
