the cause

HeartKids WA Inc is a registered charity supporting families with a child born with a congenital heart condition or who develop a heart condition during childhood. We offer a diverse support program for kids and families, fund equipment for the Children’s Cardiac Centre at PMH and support new and ongoing research into childhood heart disease. In addition, HeartKids WA aims to increase awareness in the general community and corporate sector about the high incidence of congenital heart defects and its ongoing consequences.

Established in 1979, HeartKids WA is an incorporated public

benevolent institution (PBI) and offers tax deductibility status (as DGR – deductible gift recipient). While we receive tied grant funding from Telethon, Lotterywest and the Department of Health WA, HeartKids WA predominately relies on self-funded activities by way of generous donations, fundraising projects, events and support from community-minded individuals and sponsoring companies.

As the public face of Childhood Heart Disease and through our active partnering with the medical community and Government, Australia will adopt best practice in the intervention, treatment and support for all those affected. This will result in a reduction of incidence, decreased mortality, significantly improved quality of life and best outcomes of those affected by Childhood Heart Disease. This will be achieved through our work in Support, Awareness, Research and Advocacy.

Together we are working towards our vision:

“Life unaffected by

childhood heart disease”

our values

Every day, HeartKids WA cares for amazing children, teens and families at a time when they need it most. Talented and dedicated staff are involved in their treatment and support, together with a wide range of individuals who are determined to make a real difference to the future of HeartKids.

Many of the children we support have long term, life threatening illnesses. HeartKids WA provides direct support, understanding and information to these children and their families, and continues to assist them throughout their lives as they experience the many challenges and milestones that are typical of a HeartKids’ journey.

why we do

what we do

HeartKids WA believes that well-informed and supported families are better able to cope with the day-to-day care of their child and management of the condition. We find that many of the questions and needs they have are not medical in nature. You can find out more about HeartKids WA through our website and by reading our latest newsletter:

the event

The 2016 HeartKids WA Gala Ball returns to the magnificent Crown Perth Grand Ballroom on Saturday 14th May, 2016. Over 500 guests will join us for an evening of sophistication, gourmet dining and entertainment, while generously contributing to HeartKids WA. Highlights will include live and silent auctions and the raffle where guests have the opportunity to bid on and win some amazing prizes before the live band takes the party through until midnight.

In addition to raising funds, the 2016 for HeartKids WA Gala Ball is also a unique marketing opportunity for the many businesses which support our major annual fundraising event through sponsorship, the donation of goods and services for auction and raffle items and assistance in the organisation of the Gala Ball. In 2016, we will endeavour to extend our event coverage beyond that of our guests through the use of multiple social media pathways.

ball proceeds

The proceeds from the 2016 HeartKids WA Gala Ball will allow us to reach more children and families than we have ever done before. In 2015, the demand for our services has continued to grow dramatically, as thankfully more of our children are surviving into adulthood. This is a trend that will only continue to increase as medical research and breakthroughs advance. We are contacted daily by families and communities requiring our support and assistance.

Every day in Australia, eight babies are born with a congenital heart condition and every week, four little lives are lost to the condition. HeartKids WA is there to support the families through their HeartKid journey.

In 2016, we will be developing a more substantial “Tween” program for children in the 8-16 age group to develop strong networks, bonds and friendships that are vital to helping them through their journey. We also continue to develop our much needed regional program and reach more people affected by childhood heart disease. By helping families know that they are not alone in their challenging journey, HeartKids WA does make a difference.

HeartKids WA Gala Ball 2016 Prospectus | 7 6 | HeartKids WA Gala Ball 2016 Prospectus

This is the story of our beautiful superhero, Amber Dawn Field. Born on 29th October 2012, the youngest of our three children and little sister to Patrick and Daniel. At our 20 week scan we were told of the devastating news that our baby had Congenital Heart Disease. That was the day our world came crashing down, we wondered what the future held for our baby - our family. When Amber came into the world we met her with only a brief cuddle before she was whisked away for testing. It was found the Amber’s heart condition was very complex and was found to have an Unbalanced AVSD, Double Outlet Right Ventricle, Pulmonary Valve Stenosis & Atrioventricular Septal Defect. We were happy to be able to take Amber home for 4 weeks before her first surgery was required, a BT shunt on her right side. Amber recovered quickly; we were so relieved to get through such a harrowing time of watching Amber endure invasive tests, surgery and recovery. At 12 weeks of age we noticed Amber becoming blue again. Tests revealed Amber’s shunt had stopped working and she would require another BT shunt to be inserted, this time on her left side. More uncertainty and worry ensued watching our beautiful Amber go through all of this again however we could only remain strong and positive for our little girl.

At 14 months old Amber’s next round of tests revealed she was quickly outgrowing her BT Shunts. A bigger Central Shunt was required and an Atrial Septectomy to remove a piece of Amber’s heart to improve her blood flow and reduce her high lung pressures. This would be Amber’s first open heart surgery however we felt after Amber’s previous surgeries that all would go to plan with another quick recovery. How wrong we were. Amber could not come off the heart-lung bypass machine used during surgery, her heart not strong enough to pump on its own. So she went onto ECMO a machine which acted as Amber’s heart and lungs to hopefully give her little heart time to recover. The next 6 days felt like the longest of our lives with Amber’s life hanging in the balance; we were beside ourselves with worry. Not leaving her side we stroked and talked to her in the hope that she would keep fighting for her life. On day 6, Christmas Eve morning 2013 Amber began losing large amounts of blood. We were told it was now time to attempt for her to come off the machine but her chances of her survival were slim. Devastated, our emotions uncontrollable we gave Amber kisses and words of encouragement to keep fighting not wanting to leave her. To everyone’s amazement Amber’s heart kicked into action and began working on its own, we were elated she had beaten the odds.

6 months went by and Amber started to become blue again. Tests revealed that Amber’s AV value was severely leaking and another surgery would be required to repair the valve, this time in Melbourne. Given the trauma Amber experienced in the last surgery we were told Amber had 50% chance of survival if we chose surgery. We were beside ourselves with worry but this was Amber’s only hope, without it she would go into heart failure. During Amber’s surgery her valve was repaired along with ‘The Glen’ stage 2 of The Fontan Procedure. This was a surprise repair that the medical team decided to do mid-surgery with hopes that she would tolerate it given her past high lung pressure readings. It was the best possible outcome for Amber. Again she managed to beat the odds and make a good recovery, heading back home to WA one month later. It has now been just over 12 months and we are preparing for Amber’s next surgery in Melbourne – another repair to her AV valve and the Fontan Completion. In February 2016 Amber will undergo further testing here in WA to determine when this will be.

Amber is now 3 years old and loves ballet dancing, the Wiggles, Peppa pig, playing with her friends and all things chocolate. She is a very active little girl but does at times tire quickly and become breathless. Our beautiful super girl Amber never ceases to astound us and all around her with her strong will, determination and zest for life. She has taught us great strength and to take nothing in life for granted.

Throughout the last 3 years HeartKids WA has always been by our side. From pre-birth, post birth, throughout all of Amber’s surgeries and outpatient appointments the level of support we have received by HeartKids family support co-ordinators (Maree & Cecilia) has been second to none. Just knowing that HeartKids is run by parents with their own HeartKids has given us comfort to talk and be able to relate to others going through similar circumstances. From a chat, to a cup of coffee, lunch when you can’t leave your child’s hospital bedside, to a cry and a cuddle – they are always there. HeartKids has also inspired me to give back to other families like my own and I now volunteer my time with another local heart mum as the Mandurah Regional Support Co-ordinators. Through all of the support we have received we know how important HeartKids WA is in lives of other HeartKid families. Written by Kirstin Field, Heartmum to Amber Dawn Field.
