Principal News…..

Ahhh, Spring is around the corner. This means the days are longer, they get warmer and for some the dreaded “hay fever”. I just love this time of the year.

Upgrade and refurbishment progress

A representative from the Department of Education has visited our school to discuss the proposal for the $1.2 million. Home Economics, Visual and Performing Arts, Information Technology, Design and Technology and the Canteen will all benefit from this funding. The extent of the refurbishment will be revealed in due course. So again, watch this space.

National School Opinion survey

We are required to complete this survey every two years. Since our last survey was completed in 2018, it is now time to complete another one. Please take the time to answer

twenty questions. You will find them on pages 6 and 7 in the attached link https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/9RwduK5a If you cannot open this link, please call in to collect or phone 9782 3800 to request a paper copy to be sent home. Survey closes on Friday 4 September 2020.

Traffic reminder before and after school

Please be aware that the speed limit for the one-way driveway is 20km/hour. This is particularly important before and after school when our roads are accommodating both pedestrians and vehicles. Our student drivers will be receiving an “Authority to Drive” outlining the requirements and conditions on driving to and from school.

Thank you for your continued support

Our Boys Basketball Country Week team were very competitive, losing only one game and finishing second overall. This group of stu-dents showed good sportsmanship and had fun playing the games. We started with a win in our first game against Keanon College winning by 14 points. They played well and could ac-tually run as they had their bellies full from Maccas and thickshakes.

The only loss was against Newton Moore, losing by 13 points and was a tough game trying to defend a team that were amazing at their 3 point shots. We won against Busselton by 4 points. Lockie had a knee injury in this game which side-lined him for the remainder of the carnival. Our fourth game was another win against Manjimup by 11 points. Jordan Rakowski had a blinder in this game hitting five 3 pointers. Our last game against Collie was a fun game and won by 31 points. This game was played in great spirit with players from both teams opening the key way and allowing the opposition to have a go at slam dunking on a few occasions.

Well done Nathan, Lockie, Anthony, Will, Jordan, Andre & Travis Thanks to the parents that came

and supported your children on the day and a big thanks to Kelly Rakowski for scoring for us and Donna Barron for attending to Lockie with his injury. Ms Mel Hernaman

Our Netball team enjoyed a beautiful sunny day at the Country Week one day carnival. Although we only came away with the 1 win, the girls all tried their hardest and showed good sportsmanship and sense of humour throughout the day. It was a great day and way to participate in Country week in

some form.

The Girls Volleyball team proved to be unbeatable by the other schools winning all three of their games. Their first game against Busselton showed great sportsmanship between both teams, encouraging each other with smiles all around. The next two games against Newton Moore and Manjimup demonstrated so much love and excitement for the game, with the third set against Manjimup going for about half an hour because they were just having too much fun to stop! As a coach it was a privileged to see the girls' pure passion for the game and the amount of fun they had while working as a cohesive team. The wins and finishing on top overall in B Grade, were just a cherry on top! . Miss Melissa Fry

Volleyball

This year we took 8 boys to represent our school in 2020 Country Week, B grade Volleyball.

These included: Miguel Angeles (Captain), Simon Marino, Johnathon Montero, Danny Nyugen, Francis Barola, Ash Riches, Gabriel Bonsisco, Charles Ruba The boys finished with 1 win and 2 losses, in which their 2nd loss required a 3rd set to narrowly go down to Newton Moore. The boys played exceptionally well with great spirit and enthusiasm. Stand outs included our captain Miguel Angeles who lead the team and was the on field coach, tall block-ing Ash Riches and the fast reactions of Charles Ruba. As there was no Year 12s in this years team, the boys look forward to taking their experience from this year and turning it into some real success in 2021 as a mature, competitive side.

Well done! Mr Tom Quaife

Academic Extensio n News

HARVEY ACES

After much deliberation, the academic extension group have selected a name for themselves. Students who attend these classes will now be known as The Harvey ACES (Academic Challenge and Extension Students). To acknowledge their ambition to strive for academic excellence, these students will be recognised at the Term 4 Academic Assembly.

DEBATING

Throughout Term 2 and the beginning of this term students have focused on their writing during Literacy classes. From now until the end of the year the Harvey Aces will be working

towards competing in the Western Australian Debating Competition held at Edith Cowan University on Friday 6 November. The competition aims to have Novice, Junior and Senior debating leagues. The difference between Novice and Junior Divisions is that the Junior division will contain impromptu debates. We would expect to be Novice’s for our first experience. Between now and November our students will be practising in readiness to compete in three debates on the day.

On Tuesday, students participated in their first debate where they demonstrated great promise and enthusiasm. The students are very excited to be competing in this upcoming competition.

As part of their Certificate II Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways

SSEP students spent the week learning and administering First Aid.

Bleeds, breaks, bandaging, CPR and many other topics were covered.

Students learnt the importance of knowing basic first aid and how to deal

with medical emergencies.

On August 20 we travelled to the SSEP building where Mrs Pope, Mrs Taylor and the SSEP students taught us how to make snuffle mats for the dogs suffering from high anxiety in the BARC Shelter. Thank you to everyone involved from the SSEP and also Bunnings for the donation of rubber mats that make the bases.

Term Three has been extremely busy in the Science area, with a great deal of experimentation and learning taking place, with each year group in Lower School focused on Biological Sciences. We have taken pictures from some of their classes to share their experiences with you.

The Year 7 students have been examining food chains and food webs. They also got to touch and explore some artefacts from the Ocean, whilst listening to a talk on marine ecosystems, as part of National Science Week.

The Year 9 students are participating in a national competition called Curds & Why, which aims to link science and the dairy industry. They separated the solids (curds), from the liquid component of milk (whey) and examined the proportions of each in several types of milk. They also took part in a sheep's brain dissection, as part of their research into the Nervous System.

The Year 10 students extracted DNA from straw-berries, as part of their studies into Genetics and Inheritance.

The following steps can be followed to avoid or reduce the impact of a swooping magpie:

Never deliberately provoke or harass a magpie. Throwing sticks or stones usually makes them more defensive. Magpies have good memories and they may continuously swoop a potential aggressor.

Avoid areas where magpies are known to swoop. Remember, magpie hostility lasts only a few weeks and they usually only defend a small area of about 100m radius around their nest.

Locate the bird and keep watching it when entering its territory. If it swoops, don’t crouch in fear or stop: move on quickly but don’t run.

If you are riding a bike make sure you wear a helmet, and dismount and walk through nesting magpie territory.

Wear a hat and sunglasses or carry an umbrella for protection. Magpies initially attack from behind but can swoop back around.

Adopt a confident stance as this can have a strong deterrent effect.

Remember that the magpies are just trying to protect their young. Learning to live alongside wildlife is an important step towards building a better living environment, and observing and listening to magpies can be an enjoyable experience.

On a cold frosty morning a group of hardy Year 12 students attended school on the weekend. Not for extra study but in a bid to raise money for their school ball. The carwash was a success with many community members bringing in several cars to be washed and dried. The kids got wet, the ground got muddy and the place got busy and thanks to the support of the community we were able to raise over $700. Add this to other smaller fund-raising events such as $100 note and PJ Day at the school the Year 12's should have a night to remember, especially in this difficult Co-Vid year.
