Dear Parents,
Well, we’ve made it and it has been absolutely wonderful to celebrate with you and your children both today and in the past two weeks!
Today’s Prize-Giving events were the most wonderful celebration of your children’s achievements and positive mindsets over the past eighteen months and I was bursting with pride as I spoke about each individual in our school.
As you will have heard me say today: It’s been a year like no other I can remember in my lifetime, and I know that your children’s
memories of the academic year 2020-21 will remain with them for life, too. It is extraordinary to think they have witnessed and been part of what will be seen as a significant moment in the history of the world. Indeed, as we continue to live through the after-effects of Coronavirus it is hard to comprehend the scale of their experience and quite how it will affect their future perspectives.
I know, however, that within our school community, our shared experience of the Coronavirus pandemic has been far-reaching: the challenges we have all had to face have been both new and overwhelming on many occasions, but they have strengthened us in so many ways.
I believe Yarrells is an absolute oasis in an increasingly grey educational world - vibrancy and joy bounce out of every single classroom. Our children love their learning and I believe we make their young lives full of happiness and give them as many enriching experiences as possible.
It is an absolute honour to lead the school and has been a privilege to work with your children this year. They are superb young people and every single individual is a key person in our happy community. They have worked with such enthusiasm and zest in what have been the most challenging of circumstances in their young lives so far. Every child has achieved something they didn’t believe possible this year and we are extremely proud of their positive mindsets as well as their successes.
We say goodbye to a fabulous group of Year 6 and 8 leavers and we wish them all happiness in their future schools. You will leave a void and we will miss you! Some of our children are also moving to different parts of the country and, for all our leavers, we hope that their love of Yarrells and the strength of our bonds with them will hold them securely as they spread their wings further afield. Once a Yarrellian; always a Yarrellian!
I should like to thank all our parents and pupils for helping to fill our working lives with joy and colour, too. You have kept us going in some pretty dark days and Yarrells has, as ever, come out shining!
We wish you all the most wonderful summer break! All the very best,
Ms Sally Weber Head

Early Years & Pre-Prep
What a busy but wonderful last week of term! How this year has flown by! There has been plenty of outside play with water exploring, bubble blowing and construction with pirate games on Wednesday afternoon. Some of us were even lucky enough to watch the 'Y Factor' performed by Years 3 and 4, which was a brilliant show with many children exclaiming how much they had enjoyed it. It was our time to shine on Thursday when we stepped onto stage and performed our Pirate Extravaganza. We sang our hearts out, danced our socks off and acted out a lovely poem. It was a triumph and our teachers could not be prouder of us if they tried! As a staff, the Early Years team are incredibly
Yarrells School & Nursery Page 3 of 8 Friday 9th July 2021 On Wednesday, Year 1 had a wonderful day at Moors Valley. We met Mike the ranger leader, who taught us lots about animals and habitats. We enjoyed taking part in some pond dipping where we used a key to identify lots of pondlife and found out lots of interesting facts! We were all very excited to find some little newts and were amazed to learn that water beetles breathe through their bottoms!
After pond dipping, we headed back to the ranger den for a delicious packed lunch. After lunch, Mike showed us some of his amazing animals; including a grass snake, tarantula and a tiny door mouse! At the end of our trip, we went for a lovely walk through the woods and enjoyed playing on the play trail. What a fantastic day out!
Harriet reports, "It was really fun and the best part was seeing Penelope the tarantula!" Alexander reports, "My favourite part was finding the animals in the pond!"
Arabella reports, "I loved dipping in the pond and finding newts. I caught a baby newt and an adult newt and it was so fun that we were able to see so many cute creatures!"
Sebastian reports, "My favourite bit was watching the snake go in and out of its hole and I liked looking at all the snake eggs!"
Lux reports, "My favourite part was looking at the tiny mice!"
Yarrells School & Nursery Page 5 of 8 Friday 9th July 2021 The children had great fun at our Spelling Bee on Monday. The
challenge was to know their high frequency word list and their spellings from this term. Quite a challenge! It was a thrilling end when Harry and Millie were the last two buzzzzzzzing. In the end, Harry pipped Millie to the post and became the overall winner, with Millie coming runner up. CARAMBA!
The children of Year 5 enjoyed a fantastic trip to Bovington Tank Museum on Tuesday this week. The weather was kind to us, and the children even had the added excitement of arriving at Bovington on an army training day. This meant that they were able to see and hear the enormous tanks thundering past, creating quite the historic atmosphere for them to learn all about World War Two (amongst other wars) at the museum. Year 5 had great fun in their
workshops, trying on World War Two
equipment and learning about all the jobs required during this stressful time for the country. They also enjoyed investigating the food, clothing, and lifestyles of a typical household in the war before being allowed time to experience the rest of the museum. Even though we spent the day there, it felt like we only just scratched the surface of the wonders of the museum. The children had a great time, and it was lovely to see them enjoying such a hands-on experience after a year of limited contact with the outside world. Thank you Bovington, we’ll be back!
Fallon created a fantastic presentation for her class in history this week all about the history of Swanage Railway. To top it all off she then presented us all with a delicious chocolate replica of one of the Swanage Trains which she had made with her granny for us all. Year 5 were able to enjoy a piece of this yummy cake at break time. Really well done, Fallon!
This week saw the final round of the presentations given by Year 6. Every single child worked extremely hard and should be proud of their achievements. Speaking in front of a large audience is not an easy task and some children were quite anxious. It is not easy going first but it’s also not easy going last!
Year 2 have been Buzzzzzing this week!

Mrs S McCullyThis week, Max treated us to some exhilarating videos on mountain biking and shared a trail for us all to follow in Wareham Forest. Ibi spoke about his love of Minecraft and the children enjoyed his fun quiz, demonstrating just how well they listened. Rufus spoke about TCG – trading card games – and explained the strategies and complexities involved in the games. Eliza brought in her tremendous dog, Twixy, and Blossom shared a training video of her delightful dachshund, Otto. Pippa shared her love of baking; the children were delighted to taste her light and airy cupcakes and also her gooey chocolate brownies.
The winners were: Henry N, Max R, Phoebe S, Faith K, Tanish P & Molly S.
Years 7 and 8 had a fantastic time at iFLY on Tuesday. The children got a chance to perfect their skydiving at an indoor skydiving experience. Once finished with this, they also experienced a VR parachuting game. The children were beautifully behaved and seemed to love the outing. Huge thanks to Mrs Barnes for organising this treat for our oldest pupils.
