Pervasive SQL 9 Client/Server
Installation and Configuration
Before you begin:
1. Anti-virus software must be disabled on every computer where you will be installing Pervasive SQL 9. After the install has completed, you should then re-enable the anti-virus software.
2. The server portion of Pervasive Client/Server must be installed to the same server share as The General Store. As an example, if you have created a shared folder for The General Store called: Genstore, Pervasive SQL 9 Server must be installed as a subdirectory to the Genstore folder.
3. We suggest you install The General Store components before you install Pervasive SQL 9. 4. Pervasive SQL 9 Server will only install on Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Windows
2000 Server (all versions), or Windows Server 2003 (all versions).
5. Read the installation instructions completely before you begin your install.
Step 1—Install the Server Portion of Pervasive SQL
9 Client/Server
Insert the Pervasive Client/Server CD in the drive. The CD should automatically start. (If the CD does not autorun, click Start > Run and type in: x:\autorun\autorun.exe where x is the drive letter of your CDROM drive).
You must accept the license agreement on the next screen. Then, click Next.
Enter your license key in the box provided. The license key is found on the sticker attached to the plastic CD case. Note: Keep a record of this license key. If lost, you can only reinstall the software by
purchasing another full version. CDS does not maintain a record of your license key.
Pervasive SQL 9 requires the most recent version of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). If you are prompted to install the JRE, you must select Yes. The Pervasive install CD contains the latest version of the Sun Java Runtime Environment.
Your options on the next screen will be determined by your server configuration. Assuming you have installed The General Store to a shared folder other than the root of Drive C, you must select Custom install on this screen. Pervasive SQL 9 must be installed to the same share as The General Store. Ex: If you created a shared folder on the server for The General Store called: Genstore, you must install Pervasive SQL 9 to this same folder. We have provided some examples below:
Option 1—The General Store has been installed to the root of the server drive C: and the entire drive C
will be shared for your workstations:
Solution—Proceed with the default installation
Option 2—The General Store has been installed on a separate drive partition with a different drive letter
(i.e. F) and you will be sharing the entire drive for use by workstations:
Click the Change… button. Change the install drive letter to: F, then click OK. Your Custom Setup screen will then say: Install to: F:\PVSW
Option 3—You will be using a shared folder for The General Store (on any drive letter), and you have
named the shared folder: Genstore
Solution—Click the Change… button. Change the install location to: (drive letter):\Genstore\PVSW
then click OK. Your Custom Setup screen will then show: (drive letter):\Genstore\PVSW
Once your installation options are complete, click Next.
Pervasive will check your system for services, programs or processes that will conflict with the
We strongly suggest you stop any services or programs on this list before you continue with the
installation. Some items on the list must be stopped using the Services control applet, while others must
be stopped by using Ctrl\Alt\Del and selecting the Processes tab.
After the conflicting programs have been stopped, click Next and your installation will proceed normally. When complete, click the Finish button.
Step 2—Configuring the Server Engine
From the Control Center, select Configure Microkernel Router
Left click on Communication Protocols
Left click on Application characteristics.
Uncheck the option: Embedded Spaces Click Apply, and then OK.
From the main Control Center screen, click on Configure Local Engine.
Change the option: Number of Input/Output Threads to: 384. Click Apply, and then OK.
Close the Pervasive Control Center. Reboot your server.
Step 3—Installing the Pervasive SQL 9 Client
The Pervasive Client must be installed on every workstation on the network that will be accessing The General Store. You will need the Pervasive Client/Server CD to install the Pervasive Client.
Again, you may be prompted to install the latest Java Runtime. Select Yes.
When the install completes, you will be prompted for connectivity, relational and transactional testing.
Pervasive will then test TCP/IP connection with the server.
Click OK.
Once the tests are complete, Pervasive will run the relational tests. The next screen should automatically contain the IP address of your server. If not, enter it in the box provided, and click Next.
Step 4—Configuring the Pervasive Client
Click Start > Programs > Pervasive.SQL 9 > Pervasive.SQL 9 Control Center:
Left click on Communication protocols, and then uncheck the option SPXII. Click Apply, and then OK. Close the Pervasive Control Center (While there is an option to Configure Local Engine, clicking here will do nothing since in the Client/Server environment, the client does not have a local engine installed). Left click on Application characteristics.
Uncheck the option: Embedded Spaces Click Apply, and then OK.
Reboot your system.
Perform the client install and configuration on every station on your network that will be accessing The General Store.
