The Growth of Air Medicine
Air medicine has become a healthcare safety net and the go-to protocol for major trauma, stroke and heart services. When time-to-treatment is of the essence for survival and full recovery, the life-saving potential of even the best local emergency medical services increases dramatically when combined with air medical transport.
The possibility of injury or serious illness requiring air medical transport is real*… on a rural highway… an out of town trip… an international vacation… a rush-hour accident… even a heart incident or stroke in your own hometown. Any of these situations can require air medical transport.
Hospital-to-hospital transfers for specialized trauma, heart, or stroke services are also becoming more and more common.
An out-of-town hospitalization due to illness or injury can leave a family member alone and stranded far from home. Parents, partners, brothers, sisters, or other family members will need to make hasty and expensive travel arrangements to be with the hospitalized family member.
MedFlight Advantage and MedFlight Advantage Global memberships
help alleviate this stress by getting the patient back to your hometown
or doctor-recommended hospital.
The MedFlight Advantage: Excellence in Air & Ground Medical Transport When you join MedFlight Advantage you provide you and your family with another layer of protection. But you also become a member of Ohio’s most established, professional and comprehensive medical transport organization.
MedFlight is a non-profit organization governed by our nationally- recognized member hospitals: Wexner Medical Center at The Ohio State University, OhioHealth Hospitals, and Akron General Medical Center.
MedFlight crewmembers have immediate access to the best emergency medical physicians at our member hospitals, and our vehicles and crews are monitored by and in continuous radio contact with our regional communications and dispatch center.
Only the most experienced and highly-trained emergency medical nurses, paramedics, and pilots can become part of a MedFlight crew. MedFlight’s internal training and continuing education programs are at the leading edge of critical care medical transport.
MedFlight’s state-of-the-art transport fleet includes new, custom-designed EC 130 medical helicopters, ground-based mobile intensive care units (MICUs), and MedCare ambulances. These vehicles are equipped with the latest mobile medical technologies and adhere to NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) guidelines.
MedFlight is a founding member of The Center for Medical Transport Research, a member of the Association of Air Medical Services, and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems.
MedCare Ambulance is a subsidiary of MedFlight and adheres to the same high standards of professionalism and quality care. MedCare provides advanced life support (ALS) and basic life support (BLS) services throughout Ohio.
National and international air medical services are provided by our medical airplane partners at AirMed. Like MedFlight, AirMed selects only state-of-the-art equipment and highly-trained crews, providing unparalleled bedside-to-bedside transportation on a worldwide basis.
AirMed has been chosen by the top hospitals in the world, is a contracted carrier for the US Department of Defense, and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems.
AirMed physicians, nurses and paramedics are trained to deal with high- altitude transport, which can make a critical difference in quality of care.
Depending on the specific needs of the patient, AirMed crews may also include physicians and nurses with experience in neonatal, pediatric or adult medical specialties.
AirMed provides ground transport between hospitals and airports and
also provides other services specific to international travel, including
foreign travel advisories, threat assessments and travel document
processing. If a program member passes away more than 150 miles from
the primary residence, AirMed will arrange and pay for all government
authorizations and provide appropriate transport to the member’s
hometown for funeral services.
