GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

PRELATE’S MESSAGE

SOCIAL QUARTERS

ADMINISTRATOR’S CORNER

Can you name another Moose lodge that finds itself postponing activities because the calendar is too full? That’s our Dale City Moose Lodge!!! We have more activities than you can shake a stick at!

The General Meeting is every 2 and 4 Thursday and allnd th members are welcome to attend and vote. I announce the start of the meeting, but we cannot give an exact starting time because it is preceded by the Board of Officers meeting and the House Committee meeting. At the Board meeting we propose accepting membership applications, buying equipment, making renovations, and many other things that will be presented to the General meeting for vote and approval. The General Meeting is your opportunity to voice your opinions and dissent. After an item has been voted on, it’s too late to voice your disapproval. Therefore, you need to attend the General Meetings to know what’s going on.

The Building Committee has had a few meetings which have been very good brainstorming sessions. There are no definite proposals as of yet but they will be forthcoming for your approval at the meeting. See you there!

Byron Bailey Governor

Please keep the following members and their families in your thoughts and prayers while they continue to recover from recent illness and injury.

Denyse Slovick continues to recover from serious illness.

Rayma Skinner is home recovering from additional surgery needed to repair a broken ankle she suffered earlier this year.

Evelyn Weeks is in Potomac Hospital.

Please feel free to contact me should you hear of a member or a member’s immediate family in need of support from our lodge. This will also allow me to keep the membership informed of illnesses and distress within our Moose family.

Rick Moore, Prelate 703-354-0732 (home) [email protected] or [email protected]

WOW. What a difference a floor can make. The lodge has replaced the old flooring in the lounge area with a new vinyl planking wood-looking floor and it looks great. If you get a chance to stop by and check it out, I know you will be impressed with the improvement.

The lodge will be trying something new and hopefully very exciting this month when we have our first Comedy Hypnosis Show on Saturday evening, August 29 .th There will be limited tickets for reserved seating in the hall area for this event. Tickets go on sale August 1 and will best

$10.00 each. They will be on sale from behind the bar.

The lodge will be having numerous nights of entertainment in August so please check out the calendar and the ads in this newsletter to see who is playing when.

The Redskins season is just around the corner and the lodge will be having potluck dinners and other fun events during the games this year. Make plans to come out to the lodge to watch the games with your fellow Moose family members.

Again, thanks to all of the members who volunteer to make things happen at the lodge and, if you would like to volunteer to help us out, just let me or one of the board of officers know. We would love to have you help out.

Hope everyone is having a great summer.

Billy Moriarity

Social Quarters Manager

We were awarded a SUPERIOR in Community Service for the fourth quarter of last year. This means that we were rated Superior for all four quarters.

Thanks to all who help with upgrading the inside and outside of our lodge. It looks fantastic. Thanks to Mary Crawford, Todd Palmer, Donald Bell, Kim Stephens, Jim White, Cindy O’Connor, Barbara Barnes, Kasey Leisz, Ricke O’Connor, Jeff Myers, Mike Harris, John Mullen, Ken Grimm, Bob Moore, Bob Skinner, Bodie Samples, and Celso Santiago. I apologize if I missed anyone but thanks to all.

Billy has lots of upcoming events planned so be sure and check the calendar. Come on down, see old friends, make new ones, and enjoy yourself.

August already!!! Where does the time go? Hope everyone is having a great summer!!!

Our meetings in August will be on the 3 and 24 (because there are five Mondays in August, we will stretch out therd th meetings this month). They will be at the usual time of 7:00 p.m. I know it is hard to get to the meetings sometimes, but we welcome every member.

Each member, when you join the Women of the Moose, is placed on a committee. Every month we have a committee doing a fund raiser. This month the Youth Involvement Committee with Tracey Robinson as the Chairman, will be doing the Back to School Supplies raffle. Tickets will go on sale starting August 7 ($1.00 each or six for $5.00). The winners will be drawn on theth 24 of August at 7:00 p.m. You need not be present to win. Just write your name on the back of each ticket when you purchase it.th The WOTM crew will be doing wings on the 5 . Thanks to all who come out and help on our turn at wing night by cookingth and serving. Last time we sold out – serving over 800 wings!!!

Our volunteer of the month is Cisy Newman. She is a relatively new member but she is always willing to help out around the lodge and at all our activities. Cisy is the Junior Regent on the Board. She and Teri McCormick were the “driving force” (along with Bob Moore and Speedy Santiago) for the July 4 Parade float. We won first place in the non-youth category for the third yearth in a row! Cisy is also very active with her daughter’s middle school cheerleading team and helping raise funds for all their events.

Thanks, Cisy.

Our email address is [email protected].

Sincerely,

Cindy O’Connor Senior Regent

Congratulations to the following Moose member for being selected as the Moose member of the month for the month of June.

Bob Moore

I selected Bob as the Moose Member of the Month.

Bob had volunteered and assisted in numerous projects recently at the lodge to include numerous hours working on the 1 Placest winning float the lodge had in the 4 of July parade. Bob alsoth volunteered his time and efforts in the cleaning up of the grounds around the lodge, cutting down and trimming trees and ensuring all the debris was taken to the landfill. I was told it was a total of 1,200 pounds of debris.

Bob also volunteers on numerous Monday nights on the grill assisting in the cooking of the chickens and ribs which continue to be a huge success for our Monday nights. You can also see Bob assisting the bartenders by emptying the trash cans and assisting them with getting beer from the walk-in coolers to stock the coolers behind the bar.

If you see Bob around the lodge, please join me in congratulating him on being selected as a Moose Member of the Month. Also, thank him for everything he does for our lodge and our members.

CARRY OUT ORDERS

VOLUNTEERING

4 OF JULY FLOAT

TH

Due to the increased cost of supplies required for carry out orders, we will be adding an additional “Carry Out Charge” of $0.50 to all carry out orders on food ordered from the kitchen. This will include Monday Night Dinner specials, Wing Nights, Taco Nights, and Friday and Saturday night.

The lodge has scheduled a Michael Hoover show for the 16 of October. Michael Hoover’s show is a tribute andth rendition of the “King” Elvis Presley.

The lodge is going to be putting together a Super Bowl 2010 Cruise. The cruise will be on board the Carnival Cruise Ship PRIDE. The cruise will be departing out of Baltimore for a 7-day Bahamas cruise. The ship will leave Baltimore at 5:00 p.m. on the 7 of February and return at 8:00th a.m. on the 14 of February. Cruise information including cabinth cost and the dates for deposit and payments will be available in a future newsletter. Mark your calendar and start saving your nickels to join your fellow Moose members on this fun cruise.

RELAX & BEAT THE HEAT

Thanks to all our members who volunteer around the lodge. Sometimes we forget to say “thank you” to you.

We here at Lodge 2165 could not do all the things we do without our volunteers. We hope everyone does a little something to make our lodge a better place – whether it is cleaning out ashtrays, picking up trash in the building or on the grounds, stocking beer, weeding the garden, emptying trash cans, picking up the playground and on and on.

Everyone should be cleaning up their tables before leaving.

What’s the old saying, “Your mother doesn’t work here!”.

The lodge recognizes Ken Grimm for all his help trimming the trees back along the driveway entering the lot and around the parking lot and play area. He spent several days single-handedly doing this work and it really has made a big difference in improving the look of the grounds. In addition, thanks to Speedy Santiago, Bob Moore, Mary Crawford, Mike Brenner, and Byron Bailey for loading all the cut branches and hauling them to the landfill.

On another note, it is great to see all the young children around the lodge. Everyone enjoys seeing them have a great time. But they are children and need to be supervised.

Thank you.

At this year’s Dale City Fourth of July Parade, the Lodge’s float placed 1 overall. The Women of the Moosest designed and assembled a truly top-notch entry and spent an unbelievable number of hours working on it. When you see them, say thanks for all their hard work: Terri McCormick, Cisy Newman, Eva Hatch, Mary Crawford, Ju-Ju Murphy, Barbara Barnes, Cindy O’Connor, Kimberly and Kelly Lutz, K. C., Bonnie, and Kailynn Hill.

While the guys weren’t much help with the artistic elements, we want to recognize them for their work putting the trailer together to hold the ladies’ handiwork: Bob Moore, Speedy Santiago, Ryan McCormick, Todd Palmer, Ken Grimm, and Bob Carter. And special thanks to Tony Cino for welding repairs to make the trailer safe and security and to Ron Blizzard for fabricating the flag pole used to display the flag.

Finally, thanks to Speedy for towing the float (he even washed his truck first!), to Ju-Ju for use of her convertible to display our “dignitaries,” and Mary Crawford for donning the Moose Costume during the parade.

Apologies to all who I may have missed, spelled a name wrong, or forgotten a last name!

Bob Moore

MOOSE HEALTH

KEEP YOUR MOOSE COOL

The heat of summer is welcome but it can be dangerous causing heat exhaustion or stroke. It can also cause heat cramps or rash. You are more susceptible to heat when the humidity is high and sweat does not evaporate as quickly. Any of the following can increase response to heat: Age (those under 4 and the elderly are at great risk, obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, mental illness, poor circulation, sunburn, alcohol use, some prescription medications such as diuretics or those for blood pressure

H EAT STRO K E --Y our body normally cools itself by sweating but sometimes sweating is not enough.

W hen that happens, your body temperature rises rapidly which can damage the brain or other vital organs. Heat stroke occurs when the body is unable to regulate its temperature. Body temperature may rise to 106° or higher in 10 to 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not provided. W arning signs of heat stroke may vary but may include the following: An extremely high body temperature (above 103° F, orally);

red, hot and dry skin (no sweating); rapid, strong pulse; throbbing headache; dizziness; and nausea. If you are around someone with these symptoms you should call 911; get the person to a shady area; cool the person using whatever methods you can (immerse in a tub of cool water, cool shower, spray with a garden hose, sponge with cool water); if the muscles begin to twitch uncontrollably, keep the person from injuring himself, do not place anything in the mouth, and do not give fluids; and, if vomiting occurs, turn the person on his side.

H EAT EXH AUSTIO N – Heat exhaustion is a milder form of heat stroke that can develop after several days of exposure to high temperatures. W arning signs include the following: heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, fainting, skin may be cool and moist, pulse rate will be fast and weak, and breathing will be fast and shallow. If you are around someone with these symptoms you should give them cool, nonalcoholic beverages; have them rest; put them in a cool shower or bath (or sponge bath); get them to an air-conditioned environment; make sure they are wearing lightweight clothing; and seek immediate medical help if symptoms are severe, the person has heart problems or high blood pressure, and/or the symptoms last longer than one hour.

HEAT CRAM PS – Heat cramps usually affect people who sweat a log during strenuous activity. Heat cramps also may be a symptom of heat exhaustion. Symptoms of heat cramps are muscle pains or cramps in the abdomen or arms or legs upon exertion. If you experience these symptoms you should seek immediate medical attention if you have heart problems or are on a low sodium diet, stop activity and sit quietly in a cool place, drink clear juice or a sport’s beverage, do no return to strenuous activity for a few hours after cramps stop, and seek medical attention if cramps last more than an hour.

HEAT RASH – Heat rash is a skin irritation caused by excessive sweating during hot, humid weather. I can occur at any age but is most common in young children. Heat rash looks like a red cluster of pimples or small blisters usually on the neck, upper chest, and/or groin; under the breasts; and in the elbow creases. Treat symptoms by keeping the area dry and dust powder to increase comfort.

PREVENTIO N – The best treatment is prevention. W hen it very hot and your are physically active drink plenty of non-alcoholic beverages with low sugar content. You should drink two to four glasses (16 to 32 ounces) of cool fluids each hour and avoid very cold drinks which can cause stomach cramps. If your doctor limits the amount of fluid you drink or you take water pills, ask how much you should drink while the weather is hot. Replace sale and minerals – a sports drink can replace the sale and minerals you loose in sweat. If you are on a low-salt diet, talk with your doctor before drinking sports beverages. W ear appropriate clothing and sunscreen. W ear as little clothing as possible (and appropriate). Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. Avoid sunburn by applying sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher 30 minutes prior to going out. Schedule outdoor activities carefully. Try to limit your outdoor activity to morning and evening hours. Try to rest often in shady areas. Pace yourself. Start slowly and pick up the pace gradually. Stop all activity of the heat makes your heart pound and leaves you gasping for breath. Stay cool indoors (M oose Lodge). Avoid hot foods and heavy meals since they add heat to your body.

DO NOT LEAVE CH ILDREN OR PETS IN CARS – Even with the windows cracked open, interior temperatures can rise almost 20 degrees within the first 10 minutes. Anyone, including pets, is at risk for serious heat- related illness or even death. As a reminder, place a stuffed animal in the front seat whenever there is a child in the car.
