About NTI Community Education

Northwest Technical Institute has provided quality educational opportunities for individuals in Northwest

Arkansas since 1975. We work extremely hard to create an active Community Education program to meet the

needs of individuals and businesses throughout Northwest Arkansas.

If you are seeking training that will improve your current skills or introduce you to new skills, for professional

purposes or for personal enrichment, Northwest Technical Institute wants to help. We offer many standard day

and evening courses throughout the year; however, we can also design one-day courses or semester-long

courses for your business or organization upon demand. If you have a suggestion for a course, or if your business

or organization would like us to design a course specifically for your employees, we are here to assist you.

Tuition is based on the length of the course and the expenses associated with the course.

Course Descriptions

A Gentle Introduction to Programming with Scripting Languages: Python and Ruby

Students will learn basic scripting language programming skills using Ruby and Python, while also covering basic debugging skills, syntax, data structures, control structures, and object-oriented programming. Some programming experience through intermediate level is preferred. Please bring a flash drive (at least 5 GB), paper and pen.

Length: 9 weeks/18 hours

Advanced Adobe Photoshop

This course digs deeper into Photoshop. Topics include how to mix graphics and text with images as well as working in layers and masks. Advanced retouching techniques, creating actions, and other shortcuts will be covered. In addition, students will work with Photoshop creative controls to produce art with images.

Length: 6 weeks/18 hours

Automotive HVAC

This course teaches basic HVAC theories and physics using both lecture and hands-on learning. Upon completion, students will understand interior cooling and heating requirements, and be able to troubleshoot, service, repair, and replace R12 and R134 refrigeration systems and components.

Length: 8 weeks/48 hours

Basic Adobe Photoshop

Learn the basics of Photoshop from opening a file to altering images. Topics covered include exposure adjustment, color adjustment, editing images, and working with layers.

Length: 6 weeks/18 hours

Basic Digital Photography

Learn the basics of digital SLR photography. This course will cover exposure, lighting, composition, and color spaces. The class will also utilize the special features of students’ cameras. Learn to shoot pictures in manual mode with confidence.

Length: 6 weeks/18 hours

Basic Welding

Students will learn the basics of welding beginning with safety and first aid. Students also learn the tools and equipment, welding processes, basic math and measuring, and basic welding joints and symbols. Students produce welded pieces for instructor feedback. Special attention is given to safety procedures.

Length: 15 weeks/45 hours

Beginning Genealogy Research

This introductory course will focus on helping those who are new to genealogical research. Methods of data collection and effective and efficient ways to manage paper records of family history will be discussed. Numerous search methods with a focus on gathering information without paying expensive on-line membership fees will be introduced. Come ready to learn and share experiences in researching your relatives. Your history starts with you!

Length: 3 weeks/6 hours

C# for ASP.NE programming – Level I

Students will learn ASP.NET web programming using C# while also covering C# syntax, data types, and data structures, control structures, and object-oriented programming. You may bring your laptop or use classroom computers. This class is appropriate for those with some basic programming experience through intermediate level. Minimal experience with one of the following is preferred: C#, Java, C++, C, PHP, PERL, Java Script, Ruby, or Visual Basic.NET.

Evernote Basics

The FREE Evernote software makes it easy to capture ideas, things you like, things you hear, and things you see in everyday life using your computer, tablet, and the web. Learn how to save websites, pictures, emails, research, etc. all in one place while sharing work on projects or planning your next vacation!

Length: 2 hours

Getting to know your iPad

Learn to utilize many of the features of your iPad and how to create custom settings that work for you. Common focus includes Email, video chatting (Facetime), the iCloud, and messaging. Hidden features are always a highlight of this class! Popular “apps” will be discussed with a focus on understanding what you are downloading. Be sure to bring your Apple ID and password to class. This course is appropriate for adults of all ages.

Horseshoeing

Through lectures and videos, we will travel in our studies from the anatomy and structure of the horse's hoof and leg to understanding the scientific principles of the farrier’s task. Through hands-on experience, students will learn the keys to trimming, balancing, and fitting the proper shoe to the equine hoof as well as how to manage the problems and

malformations of the hoof. This course is located off campus. Please contact NTI for location directions.

Introduction to Google Chrome

Learn how to use this simple, stable Internet browser that is designed to provide fast, unobtrusive web browsing. Class will focus on customizing your browser experience with themes, web apps, and extensions that integrate with other Google applications.

Introduction to Google Docs

Based on the Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs is a free web-based software that allows you to create and edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations online while collaborating in real-time with other users. Learn about the Google Cloud and how to access your free online storage.

Keyboarding (Typing) Basics

Whether you are hunting and pecking or just a little rusty, this will be a great course for you. Learn how to correctly position your fingers, learn the function(s) of the keys, and discover websites where you can improve your skills for FREE.

Length: 2 hours

Medical Coding

The Medical Coding course teaches fundamental coding skills and prepares student to take the CPC certification exam from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). The instructor is a certified proctor for the American Certification Agency For Healthcare Professionals (ACA). The course focuses on physician-based (outpatient) coding. Students will learn to review medical documentation and assign the correct procedure and diagnosis codes. Microsoft Excel 2010 – Level II

Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 Basics

In this short course, you will learn how to create and edit slides that include text, clipart, and pictures. In addition, you will learn to incorporate those slides into a slideshow that includes transitions and music.

Microsoft Word – Level I

In this introductory course, students learn to create basic documents and work with a variety of Word features. Students will edit, delete, and insert text; set margins; check spelling; use the thesaurus; align text; format documents; and more.

Length: 3 weeks/9 hours

Portrait Photography

Learn how to create dynamic portraits using your camera’s creative controls and advanced photography techniques. Posing, flash-photography, natural lighting, studio lighting, and controlling light will be covered in detail. Learn how to enhance your portraits in Photoshop and make them shine! A camera with manual capabilities would be best for this course.

Pricing, Promoting, and Presenting your Photography

Pricing and promoting your photography can be very daunting, learn the tools from a seasoned photographer. In this class, you will learn how to write an effective artist statement, how to put together a cohesive portfolio and submit your work (the right way) to galleries and photography competitions. Framing and print conservation will also be covered in detail in this class.

QuickBooks Bootcamp

Whether you have been running a business for years or are just starting out, having an organized and efficient way to manage your business is essential to save you time, money, and frustration. QuickBooks is an accounting software that is used in many service-based and merchandising businesses.

QuickBooks Payroll

This course will cover setting up and running payroll, the top ten payroll mistakes that you MUST avoid, your payroll risks and responsibilities, standard forms for new employees, tax and tax forms, and special transactions.

Small Gas Engine Repair

This course will cover basic theories of operation of small gas engines. Students will participate in hands-on work on disassemble, wear analysis, and engine assembly.

Learn basic tools that can be used to increase your productivity and maximize your efficiency at home and at work. You will learn how to customize your computer to meet your needs.

Senior Series (Designed for Seniors 55+)

File Management 101

Learn to create folders and save, retrieve, and move your files efficiently on your computer or a USB drive. Never lose a file again! Students are encouraged to bring a USB drive (also known as a flash drive) to class to practice.

Introduction to Computers for Seniors – Level I

This course begins with learning to turn the computer on! You will learn the basics of either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, the Internet, and Microsoft Word. In addition, you will learn to locate, open, and save your files. Classroom interaction is encouraged, so bring your questions!

Length: 3 hours

Introduction to Computers for Seniors – Level II

This course is a continuation of Introduction to Computers for Seniors Level I. Students will continue to learn the basics of Windows, Internet, Microsoft Word, and file management.

Length: 3 hours

Introduction to Computers for Seniors – Level III

This course is a continuation of Introduction to Computers For Seniors Level II. Students will continue to explore Windows by learning about desktop gadgets and how to change the screen display. Students will also learn about computer security and basic Microsoft Excel.

Introduction to Digital Photography – Part I

Bring your digital camera along and enjoy the adventure of digital photography! Seniors will learn the basics of operating a digital camera and tips for taking great digital photos. Once you have taken digital photos, what do you do with them? Learn how to print and save your digital photographs. If you are considering purchasing a digital camera, this will be a great way to learn more before making your purchase.

Introduction to Digital Photography – Part II

This course is a continuation of Introduction to Digital Photography – Part I. Your journey into digital photography will continue as you learn to edit your digital photographs and post them online for family and friends to view.

Introduction to Email

In this short course, you will learn to use email to send and receive messages and attachments. If you do not have an email account, you will create a free Gmail account. NOTE: If you already have an email account and want to learn how to use it, you must know your email provider, your email address, and your password to access your account in class.

Introduction to Facebook

Learn how people use Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends. You will have the opportunity to set up your own Facebook account during class.

Seniors Open Lab

Have you taken a computer class and discovered that you want to use what you have learned and learn more? The Seniors Open Lab is the place for you to come and work on a computer and practice what you have learned and continue to learn. Bring a project or a problem and have the assistance of an instructor to facilitate your continued learning. Come and go as you please. The lab is open during this time for YOU! **Students MUST have completed or be enrolled in the Intro to Computers series.

Smart Phone Basics

If you have a smart phone, or you are considering purchasing one, come to this class to learn more about the features found on most of today's smart phones. Make your smart phone work for you!
