Open Access

Open Access undergraduate programs are those whose entry is based on applicants meeting prerequisite study scores rather than a minimum Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). For current Year 12 students this means that, provided you have met the prerequisites of your chosen program of study, your achieved ATAR is not a factor in our decision to offer a place; therefore, your study scores will indicate your eligibility for a place when you receive your school results in December and you will receive a provisional offer before Christmas if you meet the prerequisites.

Open Access eligible programs are indicated throughout this booklet. For information about Open Access visit

federation.edu.au/openaccess

I chose to study in Ballarat because of the relaxed atmosphere. After coming here on Open Day, I just loved the rural setting of Mt Helen compared to other universities. Being able to see these facilities, demonstrations and talk to people was really helpful.

One of my favourite classes is biomechanics. We have got lots of practical experience using specialised equipment and have been able to design and implement our own research project. My career goal is to work in the area of biomechanics, working with elite athletes – in a setting such as the AIS – and publish literature on my findings.

The placements in my unit have included school camps, volunteering at sporting events, sports training, fitness coach and many research placements. The great thing about placement is you have a variety of areas you can work in and you get practical experience.

There have been a lot of other highlights whilst studying. In my first year I

participated in the Southern Uni Games (in netball). The whole week was so much fun, spending all of the days playing netball and the nights spent with my team mates. Another highlight has been living on Res. I have made so many lifelong friends and there were so many opportunities and activities to get involved in. Claire is currently completing a postgraduate scholarship year at the Australian Institute of Sport.

I had experience as a professional athlete before I decided to go to university, and I have a passion for the sports industry, so I thought that sports management would be the right career path for me.

The staff who take the sport management degree have had a lot of experience in the sporting industry. The opportunities you get from networking with those sorts of people can open up opportunities such as the internship at AFL Victoria.

The most enjoyable experience so far within my internship has been working with the young indigenous youth of Victoria, and having them involved in the quality programs that AFL Victoria have on offer, such as the Laguntas program, which aims to get indigenous youth into high performance programs, such as the Tate Cup and VFL.

I definitely think the internship has helped me grow. It allows you to apply the content that you’ve learnt at Uni, out in the everyday work force and provides you with life experiences for future employment.

I originally had aspirations to be a player manager, but after completing my internship at AFL Victoria I want to be involved in football development. Working with youth and being able to assist them to grow has been enjoyable for me.
