Students/Parents/Guardians:

Welcome to DIT! This course is designed to provide a basic overview of current business and information systems and trends, to introduce students to the basics and foundations required for today's business environments, to provide an introduction to information technology concepts and careers as well as the impact information technology has on the world, people, and industry, and basic web design concepts. Through hands-on exploratory experiences on the

computer, students will better understand career opportunities and current technology being used for business and continuing education. The instructional activities involve word processing, database, spreadsheet, charting, publishing, and presentation software. Students will be operating in a Windows environment as well as using the Internet.

This class has been designed to allow you to use technologies that affect your daily lives. Class projects have been developed to allow you to use technology for exploration and learning and develop higher order thinking skills that prepare you for high school, college, and the workforce. The curriculum for this course will include all Microsoft Office 2019 Suite Software, Adobe Suite Software with emphasis on earning industry certification in Adobe Illustrator.

Another objective of this class is to provide a relaxed and enjoyable learning environment for all students. Therefore, we insist you do your part to make “Technology” a positive learning experience. You should consider this lab as your own and work daily to keep it looking good.

• Newspapers, periodicals, and catalogs are used for various projects Student Expectations:

Be organized and well prepared each day. Every student will have an assigned seat. Every student is expected to be in his/her assigned seat and logged in to the computer before the tardy bell rings. Students are to immediately begin work on their assignments. If you have any questions, please raise your hand. However, before summoning the teacher, attempt to solve your own problem by tracing through the steps of the task then ask 3 of your peers before you call the teacher (think, pair, share). We are all here to learn from each other.

When you enter the computer workstation, check carefully to see that all computer station equipment is in place and that no damage has occurred. If you wait until the class has begun, you will be responsible for any damage that

P a g e 3 | 5 may appear. Do your part to keep the station in good shape. Please ask if you are unsure about how to operate any equipment in the Technology Lab.

Student Responsibilities: • Arrive on time to class with class materials prepared to work. • Come with a positive, respectful attitude.

• Be seated at your assigned computer workstation and logged in immediately upon entering.

• Hold off on any questions until the class has settled into its routine (about 10 minutes). Prior to asking the instructor, it is expected that you have attempted to solve the issue independently. Consider retracing your steps and asking a minimum of three (3) peers for assistance

• Assess your workstation by checking carefully to see that all equipment is in place and that no damage has occurred. If you wait until the class has begun, you will be responsible for any damage that may appear. Do your part to keep the station in good shape.

• Please ask if you are unsure about how to operate any equipment in the Technology Lab Teacher Responsibilities:

• Arrive Provide you with challenging, appropriate, and rewarding work.

• Establish high standards for performance, model professionalism, and provide scholastic growth. • Give clear explanations, assignments, and due dates on all work

• Be available for extra help, support, and encouragement. Classroom Rules

• No food, candy, gum, drinks, are allowed in the classroom or computer lab. • You must obtain permission to leave the classroom for any reason.

• Please be courteous while the teacher or classmates are speaking.

• Respect others and their property at all times. If you find things that belong to others, notify the teacher • There will be no tolerance for disrespecting administrators, teachers, substitute teachers, or any other guests. • No computer games, videos, iPods, mp3 players, other electronic devices, or inappropriate web sites!

• I understand that you may make mistakes, but I also expect you to own up to them and accept consequences for your actions.

Grading Policy: Grading Scale: 90-100 A 80-89 B 70-79 C 60-69 D Grading Percentages: Classwork: 25% Homework: 20%

Formative Assessments: 20% (quizzes, project components, labs, etc.)

Summative Assessments: 35% (unit tests, chapter test, final project grade, etc.) Definition of Grades

A - Outstanding Achievement (Significantly Exceeds Standards) B - Commendable Achievement (Exceeds Standards)

C - Acceptable Achievement (Meets Standards) D - Marginal Achievement (Below Standards) F – Failing

• Cell phones are not permitted in computer class. That includes the classroom, bathrooms, and computer labs. • Electronic devices including cell phones, tablets, laptops, gaming devices, are not permitted in computer class. • Cell phones and electronics taken away from students will be turned in to the main office. The device will not be

returned to the student. The student’s parent/ guardian can pick-up the phone or electronic device after 24 hours in the main office.

Academic Dishonesty

Students are expected to be honest and ethical in their academic work. Academic dishonesty is defined as an intentional act of deception in one of the following areas:

1. Cheating- use or attempted use of information or study aids during testing. 2. Fabrication- falsification or invention of any information.

3. Assisting- helping another student commit an act of academic dishonesty. 4. Tampering- altering or interfering with evaluation instruments and documents. 5. Plagiarism- representing the words or ideas of another person as one’s own.

Consequences for Not Adhering to Class Expectations • 1ST Offense- Verbal Warning

• 2nd Offense- Loss of Privileges / Parent Contact / Warning Slip • 3rd Offense- Parent/ Teacher Conference / Warning Slip

• 4th Offense – Meeting with administration /Referral Slip Late Work

• Late work will NOT be accepted. If a student is absent on the day an assignment is due, work will be accepted with an excused absence, from the attendance office, within 72 hours.Failure to turn in an assignment will result in a grade of zero.

Absent Students

• When you are absent, it is your responsibility to get any missing notes and/or assignments. Students will have to complete the make-up assignments for classes missed within three days of their return to school.
