July was another very warm, dry and sunny

month, continuing the pattern of fine summer

weather set in June. Temperatures were above

normal throughout almost all of the month; they

were around two degrees higher than normal

overall at most stations and three degrees higher

at Clones. It was the warmest July for between 11

and 17 years in most places and the warmest on

record at Malin Head, Clones and Casement

Aerodrome; records at Malin Head extend back

to 1885. Kilkenny had a total of 29 days during

the month where the maximum temperature

exceeded 20°C, with 9 of these days exceeding

25°C. The period between

the 16th and 20th was particularly hot, when

daily maxima reached over 25°C generally and

above 30°C in a few places, the highest

temperatures recorded since the

record-breaking month of August 1995. The values

of 31.0°C and 29.9°C, recorded on the 19th at

respectively, were the highest

temperatures for any month on record

at these stations. In contrast, some very

low ground temperatures were

recorded just before this hot spell;

grass minima of -1.3°C at Birr on the

13th and -0.6°C at Dublin Airport on

the 14th were the lowest such values on

record for July at both stations. Like

the previous month, dry weather

prevailed during most of July, although

some heavy falls on individual days

brought totals above normal in a few

WEATHER

July 2006

Heatwave over most of Europe

Exceptionally hot weather developed over much of western Europe during mid-July, extending to central Europe

later in the month. Mean temperatures were over five degrees higher than normal over a wide area (see charts

below), almost equalling the record temperatures set during August 2003. Maximum temperatures reached over

40°C on several days in southern Spain, while values of over 35°C were recorded in many places further north.

In Britain on the afternoon of the 19th, temperatures reached 36.5°C at Wisley, the highest July temperature

ever recorded in the country (two degrees lower than Britain’s highest ever temperature, 38.5°C, measured in

August 2003). The temperature in Paris climbed above 30°C on 16 days during the month. By the end of July, at

least 50 deaths were blamed on the extreme heat in Spain, France, Italy and the Netherlands.

places. Little or no measureable rainfall

was recorded over eastern and

southern areas between the 9th and

27th; in the Dublin area, 2-month totals

since the beginning of June were only

around 30% of normal for the period.

There were between 5 and 9 wetdays

(days with 1mm or more rainfall) in the

east and south, but between 12 and 14

wetdays in some other areas. Sunshine

totals were well above normal

everywhere and it was the sunniest July

for 16 or 17 years at almost all stations.

1st to 12th: Frontal systems over Ireland

produced outbreaks of showery rain at

times, but amounts were generally small.

An exception was on the 8th, when a band

of heavy rain associated with a depression

over the north of Ireland gave heavy falls

in many areas, especially in the west and

southwest, together with strong

southwesterly winds. Despite most days

during this spell being relatively dull,

temperatures were near or above normal.

13th to 21st: High pressure over or to the

east of the country brought dry and clear

weather with very light winds. Nightime

temperatures were below normal early in

the period, but daytime temperatures rose

well above normal, especially between the

16th and 20th. There was almost

continuous sunshine in places between the

13th and 18th, but cloud increased

thereafter. The very high temperatures

generated some localised thunderstorms

late in period.

22nd to 31st: Pressure fell gradually over

the country as depressions approached

from the west, bringing more unsettled

conditions to all areas. Dry, warm weather

continued at first during this period in the

east and south, but showery conditions

elsewhere became more extensive towards

the end of the month, giving some heavy

and thundery outbreaks; a tornado

developed near Thurles, Co. Tipperary,

early on the 31st (see page 2). Light winds

at first during this period strengthened

later from a southerly direction.

Wind and elements: Mean windspeeds

for the month were between 6 and 10

knots (11 and 19 km/hour), lower than

normal for July. The highest gust, 45 knots

(83 km/hour), was measured at Belmullet

on the 29th. Thunderstorms were

recorded in the periods 2nd to 5th, 19th to

20th, 24th to 25th and 30th to 31st, but

there were no reports of hail. Fog was

widespread on the 5th, 6th and in the

period 17th to 21st.

Although a dry month generally, there were isolated heavy falls on some days. Bands of thundery rain moving northwards over southeastern areas between the 2nd and 4th produced a 2-hour fall of 18mm at Rosslare early on the 4th.

Opposite page

Early on the 31st, a tornado lifted part of the roof from a house and tore branches from trees in the village of Glengoole, near Thurles, Co. Tipperary. Heavy and sometimes thundery showers affected many areas on the 30th and 31st, circulating around a deep depression to the west.

Acid rain occurs when pollutants combine with moisture in the air to form sulphuric or nitric acid. pH is the simplest way of measuring the acidity of precipitation. Usually pH of 7.00 is considered neutral but this is not the case in rainfall samples. Pure water in the atmosphere has an equilibrium pH value of 5.65 at 20°C owing to carbon dioxide in the air dissolving to form carbonic acid. Any value below pH 5.65 is considered acid while any value above is considered alkaline.

Sulphur dioxide and sulphate in air contribute to the formation of sulphuric acid; nitrate in air contributes to the formation of nitric acid.

Conductivity measures the total ion activity in the rainfall, i.e. the higher the conductivity the greater the number of ions present.

DIARY

(10)

It was a dry month over most of

the country, but localised heavy

falls on individual days brought

totals above normal in a few

places, while Atlantic coastal

areas were generally wetter

throughout the month. Totals

ranged from 13mm at Dublin

(Merrion Square) to 161mm at

Maam Valley, Co. Galway. It was

the driest July since 1989 at

Shannon Airport and at most

Dublin stations. Percentage of

normal values ranged from 29%

at both Casement Aerodrome

and Dublin (Phoenix Park) to

140% at Valentia Observatory.

After spells of rain in all areas early

in the month, there followed a

period of dry weather everywhere

around mid-month, before rain

returned to all areas during the final

week. The heaviest falls of the

month were recorded on the 8th,

when a band of heavy rain,

associated with a depression to the

north of the country, produced

daily totals of between 10 and

40mm generally. The highest daily

fall, 38.5mm, was measured at

Maam Valley, Co. Galway, on this

day. The number of wetdays during

the month (days with 1mm or more of

rainfall) ranged widely; there were

only between 3 and 6 wetdays at

many eastern and southeastern

stations, but between 12 and 16

wetdays were recorded in parts of

the southwest, west and north.

TEMPERATURE

Mean air temperatures for the month were over

two degrees higher than normal generally and

were over three degrees above normal in places.

Temperatures were consistently above normal

throughout the month, but the period between

the 16th and 20th was particularly hot. Mean

temperatures ranged from 15.9°C at Knock

Airport to 18.7°C at Dublin (Merrion Square). It

was the warmest July for between 11 and 17 years

at many stations and the warmest on record at

Clones, Casement Aerodrome and Malin Head

(where temperature records extend back to 1885).

Many stations recorded their highest maximum

temperatures since August 1995 in the period

between the 17th and 20th. Values of over 30°C were

measured at a number of stations on the 18th and

19th; the highest value, 32.3°C, was recorded at

Elphin, Co. Roscommon, on the 19th, the highest

temperature in Ireland since June 1976. The values of

29.9°C and 31.0°C at Belmullet and Casement

Aerodrome respectively were the highest values for

any month on record at these stations. The lowest air

temperature of the month, 4.4°C, was measured at

Ardee (Boharnamoe), Co. Louth, on the 14th, while

the lowest grass minimum value, -1.3°C, was recorded

at Birr on the 13th.

Very sunny

everywhere

July sunshine totals were well above

normal generally, especially over the east

and midlands, where totals were over

50% higher than normal. They ranged

from 170 hours at Malin Head to 283

hours at Rosslare, with percentage of

normal values between 118% of normal at

Sherkin Island, Co. Cork and 164% at

Mullingar. It was the sunniest July for

either 16 or 17 years almost everywhere.

At most stations, the sunniest period of the

month was between the 13th and 18th, when

daily values in excess of 14 hours were

widely recorded. The highest daily value of

the month, however, 15.5 hours, was

recorded at Dublin Airport on the 1st.

Global solar radiation totals ranged between

104% of normal at Valentia Observatory and

118% at Dublin Airport.

WORLD WEATHER

Global weather

highlights of

the month

Rainfall generated flooding and produced landslides in central Chile between the 10th and 12th. There were 19 reported fatalities, seven of which occurred in a landslide in Chiguayante.

In Romania, thunderstorms on the first two days of the month produced flooding in the northern part of the country, resulting in the deaths of 11 people. In Turkey, flooding from heavy rains killed at least 8 people in the same period; the most significant damage was in the northeastern part of the country near the Black Sea cities of Samsun and Giresun.

Across the Korean Peninsula, heavy rainfall that began with the arrival of typhoon Ewiniar between the 10th to 14th, continued for most of the month. Flooding was blamed for hundreds of deaths in North Korea and at least 25 deaths in South Korea. Exceptional rainfall in neighbouring Japan also produced flooding and mudslides that claimed at least 22 lives. A heatwave affected a large portion

of the U.S. between the 16th and 25th. California was particularly affected, with 140 deaths attributed to temperatures of over 40°C. Significant drought extended from Arizona and New Mexico eastward to parts of the central Gulf Coast. The most severely affected areas included southern Arizona, southern Texas and central South Dakota.

FEATURE

July 2006

Because reliable instrumental records are only

widely available for around 150 years, scientists

estimate climatic conditions in the more distant

past by analysing proxy evidence from sources

such as tree rings, corals, ocean and lake

sediments, cave deposits, ice cores, boreholes,

glaciers and documentary evidence. For example,

records of Alpine glacier length, some of which

are derived from paintings and other

documentary sources, have been used to

reconstruct the time series of surface temperature

variations in south-central Europe for the last

several centuries. Studying past climates can help

us put the 20th century warming into a broader

context, better understand the climate system and

improve projections of future climate.

Starting in the late 1990s, scientists began combining

proxy evidence from many different locations in an

effort to estimate surface temperature changes

averaged over broad geographic regions during the last

few hundred to few thousand years. These large-scale

surface temperature reconstructions have enabled

researchers to estimate past temperature variations

over the northern hemisphere or even the entire globe,

often with time resolutions as fine as decades or even

individual years. This research attracted considerable

attention because the authors concluded that the

northern hemisphere was warmer during the late 20th

century than at any other time during the past

millennium. Controversy arose because many people

interpreted this result as definitive evidence of

anthropogenic causes of recent climate change, while

others criticised the methodologies and data that were

used. As a result of a request by the United States

Congress, a committee was assembled by the U.S.

National Research Council to describe and assess the

state of scientific efforts to reconstruct surface

temperature records for the earth over approximately

the last 2,000 years and also the implications of these

efforts for our understanding of global climate

change.

The committee concludes that large-scale surface

temperature reconstructions from various sources (see

chart below) yield a generally consistent picture of

temperature trends during the preceding millennium,

including relatively warm conditions centred around

A.D. 1000 (identified by some as the “Medieval Warm

Period”) and a relatively cold period (or “Little Ice

Age”) centred around 1700. The existence and extent

of a Little Ice Age from roughly 1500 to 1850 is

supported by a wide variety of evidence, including ice

cores, tree rings, borehole temperatures, glacier length

records and historical documents. It can also be said

with a high level of confidence that global mean

surface temperature was higher during the last few

decades of the 20th century than during any

comparable period in the preceding four centuries.
