West and East, with coldest conditions
compared to LTA in parts of the South and
Southwest. The highest mean monthly
temperature was 15.0°C at Newport, Co. Mayo
with deviations from average ranging from
-0.7°C at Sherkin Island, Co Cork to +1.1°C at
Elphin Co. Roscommon. Many stations recorded
their highest maxima between the 7th and 9th,
with the month’s highest maximum of 26.8°C
recorded at Oughterard (Ardnasillagh) Co.

JUNE2013Galway on the 8th. The majority of lowest air
minimum temperatures were recorded on the
5th, 8th and 15th, with the month’s lowest
temperature of 2.8°C recorded at Mountdillion,
Co. Roscommon on the 5th. The majority of
stations reported lower minima in June 2012 and
2011. Rainfall was below average except for parts
of the North and South. Percentage of LTA
values ranged from 28% at Inishbofin, Co.
Galway to 183% at Derryhenny Co. Donegal. The
wettest days of the month were mainly on the
10th, 12th, 14th and 16th with Waterville, Co.
Kerry recording the greatest daily fall of the
month with 72.3 mm on the 10th, its wettest June
day since 2003 (10 years). Sunshine data was
above average almost everywhere, with
Belmullet, Co. Mayo and Ashford (Cronykeery),
Co. Wicklow reporting the highest percentage of
LTA with 127% at both stations. Ashford
(Cronykeery), Co. Wicklow reported the highest
amount of sunshine hours, with 229.8 and also
reported six consecutive days with over 14.1
hours of sunshine from the 4th to the 9th. The
sunniest days of the month were mainly on the
7th, 8th and 9th with the month’s highest daily
sunshine recorded at Ballyshannon (Cathleen’s
Fall), Co. Donegal on both the 7th and 8th with
16.0 hours.
1st to 9th:
Unsettled weather at the start of the
month with showers, isolated and heavy, a few with
thunder, some rain and drizzle also. Mainly dry and
warm thereafter, with some fog and mist in places.
Cloudy interludes, but mainly clear, sunny skies,
leading to low night-time temperatures and ground
frost in Midlands and eastern areas.
10th to 17th:
Wet and slightly cooler conditions
across the country as frontal activity brought bands
of rain and showers to all places. Large rainfall
accumulations, with thunderstorms in places. Mainly
dull with a small number of areas having extended
periods of sunshine. Gusts greater than 34 knots
recorded in coastal counties.
18th to 19th:
Brief return to dry, warm, sunny
conditions with little or no rainfall.
20th to 30th:
More unsettled weather with bands of
rain and drizzle with lower temperatures, becoming
warmer and drier by the end of the month. A little
ground frost in places. Good periods of sunshine,
with a couple of dull days in places.
Wind and Elements:
Mean windspeeds for the
month were between five knots (
9km/h)
at Ballyhaise
and 12 knots (
22km/h)
at Mace Head, Sherkin Island
and Malin Head. Monthly wind speeds in parts of the
Southwest, South and East were the highest in five to
11 years. No gale force winds were recorded, with the
months highest 10-minute wind speed of 33 knots
(61 km/h)
recorded at both Malin Head and Mace
Head on the 15th and 22nd, respectively. Sherkin
Island, Malin Head and Belmullet reported five days
with gusts greater than 34 knots. The month’s highest
gust was 43 knots
(80 km/h)
at Newport on the 22nd.
Numerous days recorded lightning activity, with the
most severe activity recorded on the 15th over the
Dublin area.

Acid rain occurs when pollutants combine with moisture in the air to form sulphuric or nitric acid. pH is the simplest way of measuring the acidity of precipitation. Usually pH of 7.00 is considered neutral but this is not the case in rainfall samples. Pure water in the atmosphere has an equilibrium pH value of 5.65 at 20°C owing to carbon dioxide in the air dissolving to form carbonic acid. Any value below pH 5.65 is considered acid while any value above is considered alkaline.
Sulphur dioxide and sulphate in air contribute to the formation of sulphuric acid; nitrate in air contributes to the
formation of nitric acid.
Conductivity measures the total ion activity in the rainfall, i.e. the higher the conductivity the greater the number of ions present.

Sunshine totals were above average almost
everywhere. Percentage of LTA values
ranged from 95% at Ardfert (Liscahane),
Co. Kerry with 147.2 hours of sunshine,
to 127% at both Ashford (Cronykeery),
Co.Wicklow and Belmullet Co. Mayo,
with 229.8 hours and 197.2 hours of
sunshine respectively. The sunniest day
was at Ballyshannon (Cathleen’s Fall)
with 16.0 hours of sunshine on both the
7th and 8th, its sunniest days in June since
records began in 1967. Belmullet
recorded its highest daily sunshine for
June since 1995 (18 years) with 15.7 hours
on the 7th, while Ashford (Cronykeery)
had its sunniest June since 2006. Number
of dull days ranged from one to eight.
Percentage of LTA global solar radiation
values were just on or above average ranging
from 99% at Valentia Observatory and Malin
Head to 113% at Dublin Airport.

highest pressure value was 1035.3 hPa
recorded at Valentia Observatory on the
26th as a ridge of high pressure was situated
over the country. The month’s lowest
pressure value was 991.2 hPa recorded at
Malin Head on the 22nd as a depression to
the north of Malin Head maintained a
strong, unstable southwest to west airflow.

THE MONTH
The first tropical cyclone of the 2013 North Atlantic hurricane season was Tropical Storm Andrea which made landfall
along Florida’s Gulf Coast on June 6th. Maximum winds of 100km/hr were recorded, with the storm causing a minor storm
surge, heavy rainfall and tornadoes.
Exceptional monsoon rains in northern India and Nepal, combined with melting snow brought flooding and landslides to the
region in mid-June. Over 5,000 people were killed in India, with nearly 40 people killed in Nepal.
