Galen said: We find in this text a brief description of the outlines of the anatomy of blood vessels. This is one of the things that confirms that people correctly claim

5

that this second book was compiled by H i p p o c r a t e s ' son T h e s s a l u s from things he found recorded by H i p p o c r a t e s on book leaves, (loose) sheets and scattered scraps. Some said that this T h e s s a l u s added some things of his own to them, and in my opinion people who say this are right, and (also those) who say that the first and third books1 are the only two books H i p p o c r a t e s wrote as a book to be publicly

disseminated.

Among the most compelling (pieces of ) evidence for this is the way he expresses himself in (these books): we find that the way he expresses himself in the first book and the book labelled as the third — this designation is incorrect — is identical. I said that labelling this book as the third is wrong because the book that we find labelled as

15

the third should have been labelled as the second and the book that we find labelled as the second should have been labelled as the third. If this is the case, then the book we find labelled as the sixth must be labelled as the fourth. Regarding the books we labelled as the fourth and fifth, I think that the people who drew a distinction be-tween H i p p o c r a t e s ' authentic and forged works were right. They correctly

guished them by saying that these two books are not by H i p p o c r a t e s , nor are they compilations of loose notes1 he had written like the second and sixth books. I think it would be best to label these second and sixth books as the first and second (books) of “H i p p o c r a t e s ' Notes”. If not, (they should at least be entitled) “Miscellaneous” or “Sundry Sayings” or some other title and not be included with the Epidemics. For

5

they do not discuss the unusual general diseases H i p p o c r a t e s calls “epidemics”, as we find them discussed in the first and third books, and we only find a smattering of material on this subject in the second and sixth. Rather, we find in them useful gener-al observations such as we find in the Aphorisms and in his other books which no one could call Epidemics.

10

We find that he wrote the account of the anatomy of blood vessels in this book in this manner. Apart from this account, we do not encounter any (other) correct descriptions of the anatomy of blood vessels among the observations we find in the books ascribed to H i p p o c r a t e s . For we find that the observations about the anato-my of blood vessels that form part of the book (On) the Nature of Man,2 the book

15

called Mochlicon3 and the book known as (On) Places in the Human Body4 do not agree with what is evident in dissection.

1 Here and further down, manuscripts E and K have the somewhat unusual plural ḏukūr (which

nor-mally serves as the plural of ḏakar, “male”) while M apparently normalises to taḏākīr.

2 cf. Hipp. De nat. hom. 11: CMG I 1,3, p. 192,15–196,15

3 cf. Hipp. De oss. nat. 8sq.: p. 144,7–146,22 Duminil = IX 174,4–178,2 L. The translator may have

mistaken this treatise for the Mochlicon because it was traditionally placed after the Mochlicon and called τὰ προσκείμενα τῷ Μοχλικῷ; cf. Deichgräber, Die Epidemien, p. 99sq.

The distinction between true and false information it contains takes place by the same means by which we examine other perceptible things, namely by examination based on sense perception. Just as someone who has not seen the city called At h e n s has not seen the P r o p y l a e u m ,1 the K e r a m e i k o s2 or its other sites, someone who has not performed a dissection has seen neither the arteries nor the veins nor the other

5

body parts nor the other vessels. For just as a (city) wall surrounds a city and walls sur-round houses, so the skin sursur-rounds the body of a living being. Hence, anyone who wants to see with his own eyes what is underneath the skin has to cut through it. W hen he cuts through the skin and sees for himself what is underneath, he needs to record what has become clearly apparent to him through perception, tell people who

10

want to know about it and write it down if he chooses to write about it.

H i p p o c r a t e s did not write what he wrote about this on the basis of reasoning or rational demonstration, nor because he believed it based on an inspiration granted to him by A s c l e p i u s while he was asleep or awake. Rather, he understood this by first cutting the lower abdomen along with the membrane that is spread over the

bel-15

ly and known as the peritoneum, then looking at what was underneath it and observ-ing the intestines and viscera. On the right side of the abdomen he saw the liver, on the left the spleen, after that the kidneys and after that the stomach and the intestines. He saw that the stomach touches the diaphragm and is bounded in the back by the liver on the right side and the spleen on the left.

No one could find out any of this through guesswork or prophecy and know its quality, size or location without cutting open the skin between the chest and the pu-bic bone along with the muscles that lie beneath it. Just as H i p p o c r a t e s discovered these things by cutting open the skin and observing what he saw underneath, so did H e r o p h i l u s later on. He was not content to learn this from H i p p o c r a t e s but his

5

aim was to learn it from the nature of the things itself from which H i p p o c r a t e s had learned everything he knew. He then wrote books about the anatomy of blood vessels like those H i p p o c r a t e s had written. Many ancient physicians have also per-formed dissections, seen these blood vessels in people's bodies and then written books about them like those H i p p o c r a t e s and H e r o p h i l u s had written.

10

After these came M a r i n u s , who was of my grandparents' generation. He was well-versed in the knowledge of anatomy and had studied it thoroughly, and he wrote (books) like those written by his predecessors after he had made observations with his own eyes in apes and other animals. For the Creator created all animal bodies accord-ing to the same plan, and we therefore find that in the bodies of all animals the liver is

All animals with the exception of1 those without instrumental body parts2 such as molluscs, sponges and the like, have in common that two veins originate in the liver from which all veins in the body branch off. One of these two veins springs from the concave side of the liver and divides in the stomach, spleen and intestines, the oth-er springs from the convex side of the livoth-er and proceeds hanging upwards and

down-5

wards. It goes down until it ends up at the great vertebra, which is the final vertebra of the lower back. Then, after that, it does not remain single but splits into two parts, each of which goes into one of the legs where it subdivides until it arrives at the foot. It goes up through the diaphragm and rises straight up through the middle of the chest to (the point) where the clavicles meet, which is the hollow of the throat. W hen

10

this branch arrives at this spot, it also does not remain single but splits into two veins called the “jugular veins”. Before it splits, veins branch off from it on its way from the liver to the clavicles, as they do from the other part that goes down on its way through the loins before it splits into the legs.

You can envision all the veins in the body if you imagine a tree that rises up from

15

the ground and remember how the branches separate from the trunk and keep divid-ing until they arrive at the tips, and how the trunk reaches deep underground, and roots resembling branches branch off downwards from it and also keep dividing in the same way until they reach the tips of the roots, just as the branches above

subdi-1 lit. “after excluding from this account”

vide towards their tips. Nourishment rises in the tree from the tips of the roots that reach deep into the ground towards the base of the trunk. Then the (tree's) nature thins down the nourishment that it draws through the roots and spreads it to all branches until it reaches as far as their tips.

W hen the seeds of any plant are cast on the soil, you also initially see two shoots

5

emerge from it, one going down and dividing into roots, the other shoot going up and branches separating from it. The point of the plant from which the two shoots I mentioned separate from the seed when it is cast on the soil is the mid point between the parts of the plant that are above and those that are below, and that point is called the “base” because the roots branch out from it.

10

The place in the body of an animal that corresponds to it is the liver: the lower branch that emerges from the liver, that is, the vein that springs from the portal (fis-sure) of the liver, exists so that the liver can draw nourishment from the stomach and intestines through it. Its upper branch, that is, the vein that springs from the convex part of the liver, exists so that nourishment that is drawn to it can be sent through it

It was therefore rightly said in the book (On) Nutriment: “the liver is the base of the veins”. With these words H i p p o c r a t e s also indicated that the relationship be-tween a plant and the ground corresponds to that bebe-tween a living being and its stomach: “the stomach is for a living being like the earth for a tree”. E r a s i s t r a t u s expressed this idea differently and said: “the tips of the roots descend and end up in

5

the ground in (the case of ) trees and in the stomach and intestines in (the case of ) ing beings”. Nourishment is drawn to plants from the earth and to the bodies of liv-ing beliv-ings from the stomach and intestines.

In the present passage H i p p o c r a t e s described how one of these two veins ceeds, namely the one that, as I said, springs from the convex part of the liver and

pro-10

ceeds hanging until it arrives at the clavicles and down until it arrives at the wide bone between the hips. This bone is connected to the vertebrae of the spinal column. Just as a pine tree has a single trunk that remains without branches for a very long time and then finally divides and branches proceed from it, so this vein runs through the entire chest without branches and likewise through the entire lower region until it
