問 1 26

Of all the emotions human beings have, love is the most powerful feeling. Some scientists claim that we have the emotion of love because it is useful for us to survive, as is the case with the other emotions. However, is the emotion of love really just a way to survive? There are many tales where people die for love, and such stories touch our heart. This is still applicable to the present day, as some people sacrifice their own lives to help others living in another country thousands of kilometers away. People should love not only human beings but also animals. Sometimes love cannot be explained with reason, and that is why love is a mysterious, powerful emotion.

問 2 27

Why do we study in school? Those who think that the purpose of studying is just to memorize textbooks may wonder whether studying is of help for life. In fact, memorizing itself is not useful for life, but this doesn’t mean we don’t have to study in school. We study subjects and memorize many things to use them in society. For example, the knowledge of history enables us to know the background of social events. In addition, it enables us to make the same mistakes as those in history. That’s why studying history is important and memorizing textbooks is also meaningful.

Jason: Thank you for gathering today. Every year, parents of the second graders organize a lecture for the school festival, but we haven’t decided who to invite yet. I think some of us might know interesting characters who students may not get to meet in their daily life. Does anyone have any suggestions? Either a friend or even a business connection is fine.

Neil: I have. My sister used to be a professional volleyball player, and I can ask her to come and talk to the students. Since there are countless professional athletes appearing on the TV and all over the billboards, I think it would be a great idea for the students to meet one of them. Also, many of our children dream to become professional athletes in the future. I think her lecture will be a memorable event for them. In addition, she is now studying sports science in university to become a volleyball coach. If the students get to meet someone studying hard with a goal in mind, those who are not interested in sports can also enjoy the lecture.

I think it is better to choose a general theme. For example, a lecture on global warming. Some students may think that it is boring, but I believe that the knowledge would flourish someday.

Alice: I agree with Mario’s opinion. I’m a university professor and I specialize in environmental science. Themes such as plastic waste and eco-friendly energy are considered to be important, and all people should have a good understanding of these topics.

問 15)の 3337 に入れるの に最も適当なものを,それぞれ下の~のうちから一つずつ選べ。

Researchers in the cross-cultural communication field have long been trying to find out how people make and read facial expressions. The popular topic within the field is whether facial expressions are universal or culture specific. Although quite a few researchers have conducted experiments to answer this question, what they know so far has come mostly from the following two experiments.

The researchers initially focused on how people in a particular culture would perceive the facial expressions of people from far away. One of the most famous studies was conducted in the early 1970s with New Guineans, most of whom in those days were isolated from Western culture. Photographs of Western people expressing six distinctive emotions―happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, and disgust―were shown. They were then asked what emotion was being expressed. They recognized most of the emotions accurately; however, they had some difficulty in recognizing the difference between fear and surprise. The researchers commented that in New Guinean culture, fear appeared almost always with surprise; therefore, they were not able to tell the difference between the two.

More recently, research trends have evolved to include a two-way comparative study, in which people in two or more cultural groups were shown photographs of people and asked to judge the facial expressions of the other, as well as those of their own cultural members. One important study was conducted in the beginning of the 21st century with Indian, American and Japanese college students who lived in their own countries. The students were asked to judge

have both *commonality and diversity.

Cross-cultural methods have found that facial expressions may be partially culture specific as seen in the two experiments mentioned above. Therefore, facial expressions cannot simply be categorized into one of two sides, either in terms of universality or culture specificity. Consequently, researchers need to carry their investigations further so that they involve more varied cultural groups, and focus on these groups more deeply in order to provide more definite conclusions.

第 6 問 次の文章を読み,下の問い(

)に答えよ。なお,文章の左にある⑴ ~⑷はパラグラフ(段落)の番号を表している。

⑴ Fifty years have passed since Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the Moon. So far, only three nations―the United States, the former Soviet Union and China―have soft-landed there. Each of these missions was carried out by their respective national space agencies. These days, however, private enterprises with advanced technology are becoming interested in Moon missions. Companies in such industries as mining, telecommunication, and solar power generation are planning to send their personnel there to build business facilities. The Moon is increasingly being seen as a potential business frontier and space colony.

⑵ As a first step toward achieving their long-term goals, these companies aim to explore the Moon in search of natural resources, such as gold, platinum, rare earth elements, and water. In fact, recent scientific research has confirmed that water ice exists both on and beneath its surface. If the lunar ice is converted into water, it could facilitate business activities and help people stay there longer. In addition, the constituents of water― hydrogen and oxygenare commonly used to power space rockets. If the Moon should serve as a remote base where rocket fuel is available, it would increase the chance of deep-space missions to Mars and the other planets taking place.

⑶ Although the future development of the Moon and its resources seems promising, there remain some issues to be resolved. Firstly, if commercial activities are permitted without international rules or guidelines to follow, a

⑷ Now is the time for the whole international community to respect the principle that, “the Moon and its natural resources are the common heritage of mankind,” as stated in the 1979 United Nations resolution known as the Moon Agreement. In accordance with the Agreement, all the parties involved must ensure that their future activities on the Moon will be conducted for internationally acceptable purposes, and in a way that benefits all people equally.
