VERVIEWThe ITS Remote Desktop Services Server provides a full Windows client environment for MAC, Linux, Unix users and everyone who needs access to any of the application that are installed on the Server.

IMITATIONS The server only allows local user profiles: server doesn’t allow you to load your PC roaming profile (if you have one), this is to ensure the resources on the server aren’t taken up with loading large desktops and profiles

OW TO CONNECT TO THE SERVER4.1
From MAC clients
4.1.1 Open Microsoft Remote Desktop (Finder Go menu -> Applications)
4.1.2 Click on the new button.
4.1.3 Fill in the required fields in the General tab.
4.1.4 Click the red circle (top left corner) to close Edit window.
4.1.5 Double click the newly created Remote
Desktop connection to make a connection to the Remote Desktop Server.
4.1.6 Click the Continue button when the Verify Certificate window appears.
4.1.7 Enter your username and password (please make sure you put “STAFF\” before your usual username)

From Linux Clients
4.2.1 Open Terminal, and type rdesktop remotedesktop.vuw.ac.nz (without the quotes’):
4.2.3 Enter your VUW staff credentials:
4.2.5 Just a couple of quick hints to use rdesktop 1
To change the remote window size, experiment with the rdesktop -g switch to find what best suits you. For instance:
o rdesktop -g 95% remotedesktop.vuw.ac.nz
o Will produce a remote window that takes 95 percent of your screen
To save you from having to choose ‘Other User’ as in step 2 above, you can pass your staff username via the rdesktop command like this:
o rdesktop –u staff\\username remotedesktop.vuw.ac.nz
o (Note the double backslashes above)
Putting these two switches together will create a usable windows space that is easily connected:
rdesktop –g 95% -u staff\\yourusername remotedesktop.vuw.ac.nz
4.3
From Windows clients
4.3.1 Open Remote Desktop Connection (Star menu\All Programs\Accessories)
4.3.2 Type remotedesktop.vuw.ac.nz in the Computer field and Enter your username in the User name field (please make sure you type “STAFF\” before your usual username)
4.3.3 In the Local Resources tab you can add (redirect) your local devices (Printers) to your remote desktop session.

RINTERSBy default you should have all your local printers redirected from the computer you are logged in from.
However, if you need to add a VUW network printer you can do it, following the below steps:
5.1.1 Click on Start menu\Devices and Printers:
5.1.2 Click on Add a printer:
5.1.4 If the required printer does not come up on the search list, then click on The printer that I want isn`t listed, then Next. (Otherwise you can just select the required printer on the list and click Next).
5.1.6 In the Name box type the name of the printer you wish to set up, for instance if the printer is in the Kirk Building room 810, its name is going to be the format KK-810-01-P and click Find Now.
5.1.7 Double-click on the name within the Search results, decide if you want this as the default printer, then click Finish.

ONNECTIONClick on the Start button, and select Log Off. This will terminate your Remote Desktop session and save any settings you have configured (including your Favourites in Internet Explorer), and then shuts down the Remote Desktop Connection application.
