"Book group changed

me. I used to be angry,

but now I think more

before I react. Talking

is more effective than

fighting and arguing."

"By reading, our minds

expand and we learn new

things. It's like we're in

another world and

everything is forgotten.

It's like we're explorers

finding new things."

"I couldn’t wait to get

home and read Goodnight

Gorilla to my son. I

never really thought

about what reading

books must be like for

him. But I can see now

why he's always asking

me to read the same

book over and over."

About Literature for All of Us

Literature for All of Us is an award-winning nonprofit literary arts organization that empowers teen parents and other young people living in Chicago and Evanston’s most under-resourced neighborhoods to transform their lives. Our innovative program blends reading and poetry writing with discussion in weekly book groups that build confidence and create community.

We collaborate with alternative high schools, G.E.D. programs, and after-school programs to offer professionally-led weekly book groups. Book group sessions include literary discussions, reading aloud, a poetry writing exercise, and sharing of participants’ writing.

Our book groups create a safe space where teens can talk openly about their triumphs and struggles. Book group circles encourage resilience in response to difficult life circumstances, such as domestic violence, gangs, and drugs. They build a sense of solidarity, and the book group leader becomes a trusted role model. To date, Literature for All of Us has served more than 7,500 individuals.

In the 2013-14, we expanded our services by partnering with Chicago Women In Trades to serve unemployed and under-employed women pursuing a career in the trades. This year, we’re planning to expand our services again by honing the soft skills of young people participating in workforce development programs.

Past Galas

For the past three years we’ve hosted the WORDplay Gala which allowed guests to try their hand at blackjack, roulette, and poker in support of Literature for All of Us. This year we’re keeping the casino elements everyone loved while adding a whimsical Mardi Gras-inspired theme. The event has already been generating buzz among our supporters, and we are excited to be one of the first events in the city to kick-off the Mardi Gras season!

We hope you’ll help us make our inaugural Mardi Gras Magic event a night to remember by sponsoring or underwriting the event, donating to our silent auction, or purchasing an ad in our ad book. After all, we depend on the support from our community partners to raise the important funds needed to continue our transformative work in Chicago and Evanston.
