August 2017 Dear

LEGAL PRACTICE COURSES Full and Part time year 1 – 2017/2018 - JOINING INSTRUCTIONS This letter contains the Joining Instructions for the 2017/2018 Legal Practice Courses.

PLEASE READ THIS LETTER THOROUGHLY AS IT CONTAINS IMPORTANT INFORMATION

[1] ENROLMENT

At enrolment you must produce:

Your original degree certificate and a full transcript of your marks and a second copy of each which we

will retain on your student file. We are aware that if you are taking resits in August you will not be able to

produce this but you would need to do so once you receive the notification of your resit marks.

You will not be permitted to enrol upon the LPC course without producing this evidence (if you are

awaiting re-sit results please see section 4 below). Students are not permitted to enroll off site and

must attend the enrolment session.

Your enrolment session will take place on Friday 1st September 2017 at 10.00 in City Campus East 1

(CCE1) third floor hub,

Please ensure that you have completed the online self-registration process before your arrive at the

enrolment session. Please note that the enrolment session is a very busy time so please expect to queue,

staff will endeavor to process you as quickly as possible. A map of Northumbria University can be accessed on line at http://northumbria.ac.uk/brochure/visit/campus_branch/ncle_cmp/city_campus/ After the above documents have been checked you will be provided with your induction timetable, course materials and locker keys, therefore it is imperative that you do attend the enrolment session.

If you are self-financing (i.e. you do not have a local authority grant), you will be required to pay the full tuition fee of £10,000 if you are enrolling on a full time programme and £5,000 for the first year’s fees if you are enrolling on a part time programme Alternatively, the University operates an installment payment scheme for self-financing students. You can access the information on installment payment scheme at the following link; https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/study-at-northumbria/postgraduate-study/financial-support/spread-the-cost-of-your-tuition-fees-with-our-easy-payment-terms/ You will also have to pay the additional £15 SRA registration fee - which the SRA charges each student and which we collect on their behalf. Please make all cheques payable to the University of Northumbria or if you wish you can now pay online. You will find the link to this facility on the University of Northumbria home page http://northumbria.ac.uk/ . Should your sponsor be paying your fees could you please ask them to confirm this in writing and bring this confirmation to the above session.

If you require a locker you will need to pay a deposit of £20 to secure a locker, which will be refunded at the end of the course when you return your locker key.

[2] COURSE HANDBOOK

The Handbook for the 2017/2018 will be made available on the elp programme site for the LPC. You will have access to the elp once you enroll. It sets out in some detail what you will be studying on the LPC, how it will be taught, and how you will be assessed. The material in the Handbook is important. Please read it carefully. I will be going over aspects of the handbook in the Welcome Talk. I will be happy to answer any questions that you may have during the Foundation Course.

[3] CHARACTER SUITABILITY

The SRA will not check the character and suitability of a student before they enrol on the LPC, because it is not a requirement for enrolment. The SRA do however require students to disclose to them issues relating to character and suitability before they commence a period of recognised training, and again on admission as a solicitor.

The SRA appreciate that students who have character and suitability issues may want an early assessment before they embark on the LPC, and they have retained the power to undertake these early assessments.

[4] STUDENTS TAKING RESITS

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) recognises that some students wishing to embark on the LPC may be required to take re-sits in order to complete their Qualifying Law Degree or Common Professional Examination/Graduate Diploma in Law. Students taking re-sits will not be able to satisfy the requirement to have completed the academic stage of training by the enrolment date but must produce the necessary

documents to the University by 31st October 2017.

Please note that it is the individual students’ responsibility to ensure that their re-sit results are submitted to the University by 31st October 2017. If your results are not received by this date you will not have completed the academic stage of training and will have to leave the LPC.

In the event that you are then required to leave the LPC for failing to provide a letter confirming completion of the academic stage of training, you may be liable for the payment of course fees, depending on the agreements that have been made at the start of the course.

[5] ACCOMMODATION

If you are seeking accommodation in the area, I suggest you visit the Accommodation Service website on http://northumbria.ac.uk/brochure/facilities/acc/ , which may assist your search.

[6] SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

Please note that the LPC is a full-time course and therefore classes can be timetabled between the hours of 9am and 6pm Tuesday and Wednesday for the 2 day route. If you have any special circumstances that may affect your ability to attend during those hours then please contact me as soon as possible.

Consideration will only be given to those who have notified me of their special circumstances prior to enrolment

The full teaching programme starts on Monday 4th September 2017 with the Foundation Course which will

run from Monday 4th to Thursday 7th September inclusive and thereafter teaching will take place each

Tuesday and Wednesday. It is also essential that you attend on Friday 1st September 2017 when you will need

to enroll on the course.

Finally, on enrolment you will be receiving a large amount of material, including the subject handbooks and the various LPC textbooks. It would therefore be a good idea to bring a strong bag with you!

We look forward to meeting you on 1st September 2017.

Yours sincerely,

Amanda Newby Programme Leader
