Delco Wire & Cable

Expansion targets increased

market share within broadcast

and Communications market

In an effort to increase their footprint within the Broadcast and communications market, Iewc has recently acquired canadian-based delco wire and cable limited. This acquisition, which was finalized on January 1, 2013, will help enable Iewc with the necessary resources to expand its offering of broadcast and communication solutions.

delco wire & cable was founded in 1974 as a stocking distributor of electronic wire and cable. It was not until the 1990s, however, that delco began to emerge as a proven leader in canada’s Broadcast and communications industry. The

mid-to-late 1990’s served not only as the beginnings of growth for delco wire & cable, but also for the

Broadcast and communications industry as a whole. Through this time period the industry saw heavy growth of consumer usage in cable t e l e v i s i o n , internet, as well as high definition media.

This led to rapid organic growth within delco. with demand at an all time high, delco expanded

their operations with new sales and distribution centers in calgary, Alberta and Tampa, florida.

delco President and ceO, roger caynor, who has joined Iewc as the Vice President of Broadcast and communications commented, “delco’s strengths in the Broadcast and communication markets will be leveraged by Iewc’s strong global footprint and excellent customer service. The two companies have very similar business models as well as supporting products and services. I am certain the delco brand will be bolstered in the coming years and am excited about the future opportunities our customers will receive as we become a part of the Iewc team.“

Integration of delco began shortly after the acquisition was finalized. Previously headquartered in concord, Ontario, delco’s corporate staff of over 15 employees transitioned to Iewc’s 20,000 square foot sales and distribution center in Ontario, canada on April 29th. The remaining delco branches have also been brought into the Iewc family and have recently reopened their doors as Iewc calgary and Iewc florida, bringing Iewc’s number of global locations to 18.

Tom Plochocki, Iewc Product manager for Broadcast and communications products stated, “we’re extremely excited about the opportunities that the delco acquisition will create for both Iewc and our customers. with over 39 years of experience, delco has truly positioned themselves as a proven leader of audio and video solutions and we’re happy to be able to bring them into the Iewc family.”

3 It all started in 1997 with a suggestion from former Iewc

President, chuck mahaffey - “what about organizing a blood drive for the community?” ron Talsky, who was relatively new to the company at the time, agreed to help lead the effort and held Iewc’s first on-site blood drive on december 22, 1997. more than 15 years later, ron remains the lifeline for Iewc’s blood drive efforts.

since it’s inception, the quarterly event has resulted in over 1600 volunteers donating a total of 195 gallons of blood to the Bloodcenter of wisconsin. donors have consisted of Iewc employees, family, friends and neighboring businesses throughout the area.

“I know how important blood donations can be in helping to save lives,” states Iewc’s ron Talsky. “It doesn’t take long at all, and it really gives you a great feeling. I’m truly happy that I’m able to give back to the community in this way.”

In addition to organizing and running the blood drive, ron also spends time recruiting new donors and greeters to help ensure that each event is a success.

On march 21, 2013, ron was presented with Iewc’s sTreTch award in honor of his time and “leadership” with the company’s on-going blood drive efforts.

The sTreTch award, which comes in the form of a stuffed giraffe, is presented to those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in exhibiting their “leadership” qualities.

iEWC’s iSo Certification Turns 20 Years old

Twenty years ago Iewc became one of the first corporations in the united states to register as an IsO certified company, helping to strengthen and reaffirm Iewc’s commitment to quality. since then, Iewc has continued to focus on the improvement of its entire business structure while fostering a culture of continual improvement.

Iewc observed this important milestone with a small ceremony on march 14th, 2013 in the atrium of Iewc headquarters in milwaukee, wI. After a few words from Juli sunquist, Iewc Quality manager, employees celebrated with birthday cake and “quality” candy bars.

“Twenty years ago Iewc took the first steps towards improving its quality efforts with IsO certification,“ stated Juli sunquist. “And while we’re excited to celebrate this important milestone in Iewc’s history, we must remember that this is only the beginning. we continue to develop effective methods to

improve Iewc’s quality standards and look forward to an extremely bright future for the company.”

Iewc received its first IsO certification on October 13, 1993, and continues to ensure compliancy certification at all of its locations across the globe.

iEWC’s Enrique madrigal Challenges mount iztaccíhuatl

At age 27, enrique madrigal had never experienced a snowfall. Yet, on saturday, march 16th, 2013, he found himself in the middle of one of the worst blizzards to ever descend upon mount Iztaccíhuatl in mexico.

The icy wind pounded against enrique’s tent in which his group of five had hunkered down in as they attempted to wait out the storm. The tent, built for a party of four, left little extra room as the structure was violently thrown back and forth with the fury of the storm.

disappointment had begun to creep into enrique. It was only a few days earlier that he had been making final preparations for his trek up to the summit of mount Iztaccíhuatl, looking forward to the excitement and satisfaction of gazing out over the horizon. It appeared now, however, that this trip might yield nothing more than a solemn trek back down the mountain.

enrique reached out for his water bottle and took a small sip. his mind raced back to the group’s decision to leave a small amount of supplies at a previous camp in an effort to lighten their load. The decision was quickly turning out to be a mistake, and only adding to enrique’s worsening mood.

The idea of mountaineering had always intrigued enrique, but it wasn’t until the last two years that he had really begun to take steps towards planning and training for such an expedition.

eventual attempt at mount Iztaccíhuatl. On weekends he would climb smaller local mountains in monterrey: cerro de la silla, copete del Aguila, la m and chipinque. while none of these mountains were over 2,500 meters above sea level, the repetitive climbs helped to build his endurance and overall physical condition.

enrique knew, though, that climbing a mountain like Iztaccíhuatl would require much more than a strong body - it would also require spirit and mental endurance.

standing at 5,230 meters, mount Iztaccíhuatl is mexico’s third highest dormant volcano. The name Iztaccíhuatl stands for “white woman”, reflecting the four individual snow-capped peaks which depict the head, chest, knees and feet of a sleeping female when seen from the east or west. It is the lowest peak containing permanent snow and glaciers in mexico.

enrique recruited four friends to join him on the expedition, and on friday, march 15th, 2013, the group arrived at camp near the base of the mountain, otherwise known as Paso de cortes. It was just a little past noon, and the group settled in at Altzomoni shelter for a bite to eat.

finishing the last bite of his sandwich, enrique glanced down at his watch. It was nearing 2Pm.

The group finished their lunch, gathered their equipment, and

5 summit wouldn’t begin until the next day, the short trek would

help to acclimate their bodies to the higher altitudes of the mountain and help to lessen the effects of lower oxygen levels. due to the lower amount of oxygen found above 2,400 meters, many climbers often experience non-specific symptoms that often resemble the flu or a hangover. Otherwise known as altitude sickness, these symptoms can often make climbing difficult, if not impossible, for those who have a hard time adjusting to the change in oxygen pressure.

luckily, enrique felt he was adjusting fairly well to the change in pressure. Besides a little light-headedness, he was excited for saturday.

After reaching the first Portillo, the group returned to Altzomoni shelter for a good night’s sleep.

They awoke at 6Am on saturday and enjoyed a light breakfast. enrique was getting anxious. The climb up mount Iztaccíhuatl that he had been planning for the last few years was about to begin.

By 8Am, backpacks and equipment had been prepped and the group arrived at la Joya - the base of the mountain. despite the overcast skies, temperatures were holding around -5c, and snow that was falling didn’t appear to be of any consequence. with backpacks and equipment in hand, the group began their journey up mount Iztaccíhuatl.

Progress was slow, but steady. The snow had picked up slightly, reducing visibility across the mountain. despites these issues, the group’s motivation to reach their goal had not wavered. step by step they continued up the mountainside, enrique’s eyes firmly set upon the peak.

By 6Pm, conditions had severely deteriorated and icy snow was stinging enrique’s face like needles. The group had planned to reach the fourth Portillo, which sat at 4,760 meters above sea level, around 7Pm that night. The worsening storm, however, had slowed their progress and the view of the third Portillo was just coming into view around 6Pm.

The decision was made to make camp for the night as it was

beginning to be too risky to continue onwards. They would reassess the situation in the morning to see if the final leg of the journey would be possible.

That night, enrique sat helpless in the tent, listening to the relentless storm rage outside. Temperatures had dropped to -20c and the group huddled together attempting to keep their spirits up. As much as it frustrated him, it was beginning to appear that reaching the summit this time would be impossible.

The next morning, the group emerged from the tent to discover over two feet of snow had fallen during the night, and the decision was made to turn back.

They had come so close, enrique thought. Only 12 kilometers from the summit of mount Iztaccíhuatl and they were forced to turn back. It wasn’t how he imagined this trip ending, not at all.

It was not until halfway down the mountain that enrique’s mood had begun to lighten. They may not have made the summit, but the experience was something he would never forget. The mountain would always be there, and if there was one thing enrique knew, Iztaccíhuatl would not win the fight next time.

upon his return, a fellow employee asked enrique what motivated him to attempt such a climb. enrique responded, “from my point of view, mountaineering is very much like being a company leader. In the end, the decisions you make have an impact on everyone. You must always remain focused because one missed step can have terrible consequences. I climb not only because it’s rewarding, but because it has taught me how to lead, communicate, and support a team. “ while enrique enjoys the adrenaline rush that comes with climbing, he feels the real value comes in applying what he’s learned about leadership and communication at Iewc. “It’s never just been about conquering the mountain,” enrique stated. “It’s much more about learning to be a better person and a confident leader.”

enrique will attempt to reach the summit of mount Iztaccíhuatl again during the summer of 2013.

In the dark and cold industrial space of wire and cable components normally dominated by the PVc and XlPe powerhouses, there is a new line of products now available at Iewc looking to challenge the status quo with a smaller, lighter, and greener option. Your machines no longer need to be weighed down with components that struggle to bend and flex in tight spaces. Iewc now offers the perfect solution set with Alpha wire’s ecoGen wire and cable products.

The ecoGen family includes both hook-up wire and multi-conductor cable variations. ecowire

®

is the first member of the family, and was the first fully recyclable hook-up wire, with up to 45% space and 40% weight savings. Its sister product, ecowire Plus, offers all the benefits of ecowire, but also with improved fluid resistance for industrial applications. ecocable

®

and ecoflex

control cables are the latest additions to the family, offering up to 47% space and 65% weight savings in a compact recyclable package. ecoflex is also rated for up to 1 million flex life cycles. ecoGen’s combination of space savings, weight savings and recyclability in a multi-conductor control cable is a first for the cable industry:

• Contains no halogens, phthalates, or heavy metals making it easily recyclable: Meets RoHS and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) requirements

• The specific gravity is lower than other insulation materials and yields significant weight savings: 65% for EcoCable and 55% for EcoFlex

• Dielectric properties of mPPE make a reduced wall thickness possible, while maintaining the same electrical properties as a thicker PVC control cable: 47% for EcoCable and 32% for EcoFlex

It’s a big, cold world out there, but your wire and cable components don’t have to be cold too. ecoGen products offer a smaller, lighter, and better way of designing the electronic systems in your machines. Iewc is proud to stock Alpha wire’s full ecoGen line of products, ensuring you can find the right product to fight even your toughest environmental situations.
